It's interesting how these 'Accidents' happen. Often blame is taken by a more senior employee who wasn't too far from retirement anyway and the apology is to remove them from the company. Makes you wonder if the profit from these 'Accidents' would have been enough to pay off the rest of the senior employees salary before they retired and still be profitable for the construction company.

Exactly! Don't people realize how many gallons of water trees drink per day? Not to mention purifier for air. Should be planting many more in swampy areas. The home I grew up in had a small creek beside it that rose quite high in spring floods. When they paved our street, instead of installing drain tiles, they just filled it in. My Dad's lovely orchard flooded, killing the trees. Some raw sewage flowed into the creek from old construction. The 10" of topsoil they promised never materialized either. And the road concrete was at most a third of the depth specified. We should have joined together with neighbors and sued the city and/or contractors. Somebody got a payoff to pass inspection. The US has just as much corruption 🙄 TFS

If the developer did get taken to court and fined for felling trees, I doubt the fine would amount to much. And the chances of legal action is small in the UK for property developers by local councils as 1) the big developers have really, really good lawyers 2) local councils cannot afford the costs if they lose a case. So councils will avoid taking any legal actions if possible and also why developers plans are rarely refused these days as the builder's will fight the cases all the way to Government ministers (who are funded by the builders anyway).

Corruption starts from the ground up. When we think of "corruption" we usually think of high ranking politicians. While corruption in the higher echelons is certainly a tremendous problem, always be aware of the massive amount of damage caused by corruption in the lower public offices. Municipal construction jobs for example are (nearly, possibly, but i'm convinced exclusively) handed out based on nepotism, bribery, or both - not on merit. This was dour, but it's a subject thats close to my heart, and i'm very frustrated with what politicians can get away with.

App. 5 years ago, we had a "whoopsie" on our famous farmers market place, too. Century-old chestnut trees were supposed to be cut down on one side, to make more room for car parking. By some mysterious "error", the trees on the wrong, opposite side were cut down. And since this happened, and these giant trees could not be replaced anyways, and no matter how much that enraged many people, the trees on the other side of the place had to be cut down, too. And, ta-dah, the amount of parking space for the market's customers doubled, AND the market now had more space for new sellers! I an quite sure this had absolutely NOTHING to do with the fact that our market is known to be the best in our region!

Tree comments: our medical school campus had a beautiful pocket of old trees that had a population of tame squirrels living there fir generations. They would take peanuts from your fingers gently and were the joy of staff, visitors and students. Wooden park benches needed replacing as the do, so a major upgrade, the trees OF COURSE were all removed, special arty metal benches installed and skimpy trees planted. It's hot as Hades in this area and not pleasant for sitting on those benches or you would have a strip on the back of your legs. The squirrels have vanished which I think was the plan. Someone had to overthink as say the horrible liability IF someone would be attacked by a mad squirrel.. We had a lovely park like areas tucked here and there, renovation has essentially modernized them to death.

There are news reports every year of houses and entire housing estates flooding but when you look at their location it's easy to see why, flood plains need to be left undeveloped. The most annoying thing is that the areas were not developed until quite recently which means the developers or planning consultants either forgot that the area is prone to flooding or they chose to ignore it ! It seems that if it hasn't flooded in the last few years then it must be safe to build on !

Gutted for you concerning the construction. It has really resonated with me. We are being subject to exactly the same where I live, in Kent. They cut down an iconic oak on one development (called The Burrows - those poor rabbits lost their homes) and on another pumped silty attenuation lake water into the brook at the rear of my property. The EA did actually look into this for us - I also reported it to the parish council, who got involved. Also building on flood plain and another 1200 houses planned on prime farmland opposite my home so I’m going to be completely surrounded. Loving your plant based quiche. I realise the filling was already quite salty but a sprinkling of kala namak (aka black salt) would help with the eggy flavour, or I have also heard that asafoetida gives a sulphurous taste. We used to hunt grouse and rabbits there when I came home from university on winter recess. There were abandoned farm fields and stone walls, too. It's all housing developments now, called "Deer Run." There is a severe housing shortage here, but chewing up the local environment to build rich people's housing helps no one.

If you haven't already looked it up, or somebody hasn't already told you, Yerba Mate (from the first of the two mystery boxes (correction: BOTH of the mystery boxes!)) is a tea made out of a South American plant instead of typical tea leaves. The plant does contain caffeine however, so it does give you a little bit of an alertness lift the same way tea does, but it has a much different taste.

If there is such a systemic problem with 'accidently' cutting down trees that shouldn't be cut down maybe it might be worth reevaluating how such trees are marked. I think like some kind of metal guard to place around the protected trees like a fence, or plate armor/mail to put around the trunk. That way they'd have to purposely remove such a guard to cut the tree. No more plausible deniability at any rate. And it means more work for the company and thus more jobs. And let's make the company pay for such devices to build on the land too. Because hey why should the tax payer have to pay for their screw ups right? This shouldn't have to be done because right now they should have zoning maps or things that clearly mark "DO NOT BUILD HERE" zones, but if they are going to be act like careless children then the adults in the room will have to force them to be responsible until they learn.

The “accidental” removal of protected trees is just so common, it’s almost expected. To prevent this, it should be made clear that if the ‘accidental’ tree felling occurs, then the bigger building plan becomes null and void, plus a HUGE fine. It has happened recently here in two separate incidents. It’s outrageous.

I did have Covid in early 2021 and for the longest time, coffee tasted and smelt like rotting vegetables/hot garbage. That's gotten better, but now onions have a weird taste. I can't really describe it, but they are more pungent to me now. Beef used to have the same pungent taste, but that has also improved for me. For some people, the only symptom they have is their sense of smell becoming altered or disabled for a time, and it does seem to take a very long time for some people to get it back to where it was. Even now over a year later, my sense of smell isn't quite right. I can't say whether you had Covid or not, but I hope you are able to enjoy cucumbers again one day.

  • @georgehopkins

I completely lost my sense of taste and smell in March 2020. No mass testing, no other symptoms, and the taste and smell thing wasn’t even an official symptom then so couldn’t confirm it was Covid, but seems extremely likely it was in retrospect. I regained a totally warped sense of taste and smell back after a couple of weeks, like you say, coffee smelled and tasted terrible, meat tasted and smelled rancid; eggs and citrus tasted particularly awful. I couldn’t tell if things had gone off as everything just smelled awful. It’s improved slowly over time, but after the 12-14 month mark it started improving much quicker and it’s now about 99% back to how it was. Coffee tastes great again which I’m very happy about since that was one of my favourite bits of my morning routine. Bizarre experience!

Two building blunders but on a much smaller scale. I worked for an organisation which wanted a shower room fashioned out of an existing room. There was to be a slope to the floor so that the shower water would drain down the slope to a gulley. However the gully was placed at the top of the slope rather than the bottom. When questioned the builder pointed out that the direction of the slope was not specified on the plans he was given. It is hard to believe that he believed that water would flow up hill. A second contractor was engaged to spray the walls with a plastic like waterproof surface as this was going to be a pretty wet environment. When our building manager inspected the work he was surprised to find a wall-clock shaped bulge on the wall which he had not been expecting to see. The reason it was the shape of a wall clock is that it was a wall clock, sprayed all over like the wall it was attached to. The contractor explained that his instructions made no mention of any clock and that he had sprayed the walls as he had been contracted to. Again, it is a bit difficult to understand this type of episode. Were the contractors taking the piss out of the customer, too afraid to query their instructions, had a liking for treating what was pretty obvious as if it there was ambiguity in it or extracting revenge for some prior injustice they had suffered? To this day I do not know.

When the newly moved in residents went out to work in the morning - they were literally using jacks to lift the houses back up, and sandwiching in more bricks to combat the sinking - before they came back home again in the evening. They had to do this multiple times as the houses kept on sinking regardless - no idea what the place is like now lol.

There are now 8 or 10 stalks and they seem to be doing fine. I originally thought if they just survived over the winter I could re-plant them in the garden in the spring, but they are thriving. I might just use them from the pot from now on. I did use some of that revolting-smelling fish fertilizer every week or so. Btw, I live in Ohio.

My parents old house was built on a flood plain. Very marshy before it was built. They spent millions on flood defences and all the houses are built with deep piles. It's been more than 20 years and there's still no signs of subsidence across all of the houses. Interestingly, the land around the house has very much dropped over time, you can see where the soil originally was on the house vs where it is now. When the town flooded a few years back, the only place that didn't flood was that housing estate.

People living at point C, being a point directly in between, are often to wonder what’s so great about point A that so many people from point B are so keen to get there, and what’s so great about point B that so many people from point A are so keen to get there. They often wish that people would just once and for all work out where the hell they wanted to be.
