Rand McNally Atlas VS The GPS !!!!

A discussion of which one you use or if you still use a good old atlas today. It the battle of Atlas Vs GPS and the winner will be????? On the trucking side we are going for our reload in Louisville Kentucky and heading for Iowa. Along the way we drive some beautiful interstates in Southern Indiana and of course find some traffic in St Louis.

I love maps since I was boy, I was fascinated by them. I have a plastic container filled with folded maps and atlas for everywhere from the US and a few countries. I especially like the old maps before the interstate highways were built. And I have 2 atlas from where i live dated 1876. I also like google maps with street view. Yeah I found out that you cannot trust GPS at all. That's why I look at maps and google maps first so I know where and what route to take.

Before I was forced to retire I had a satchel full of folded state and city maps plus my truckers atlas with me. That was before smart phones. I still m.ostly use a atlas when I travel. Use Google maps when looking for a specific address, boy that would have been nice when I was still driving.

  • @nphip16

Yes use an actual road atlas often to plan routes. Google maps to find drive times quickly. Satellite images on the phone or computer to look at destinations for amount of parking and other local spots. Gps while enroute to make turns so I'm not picking up a map and looking away from the road. Can't forget good old fold up paper state maps to find "scenic" routes when need to get around certain spots on the interstates or when ya need to run off the regular routes. 😉

I go get a new road atlas every time I do a big trip somewhere new. The old one by that time out dated or when kids were small it was messed so I'd get a new one. Our Fire Department has helped several trucks that made the mistake of using GPS and ending up on ATV / UTV trails. My son helped one driver by setting his after we got him off a mountain road that school buses are able to make but the bigger rigs have issues. We are in the southern most county of WV.

Good video man and a good question. Your videos are real good I can watch them for an hour. I can watch him for 20 minutes. I'm old school I still use a atlas map GPS. And you're right you cannot count 100% on a GPS. GPS told me to turn right to go to a 12 foot Bridge.when I needed to turn left at the intersection. A 13-6 trailer it is not fitting underneath the 12 foot bridge. I only laugh because I used a headlamp too do all my paperwork. It's good to know I'm not the only driver who use that too. It works very well.

G'day Kurt, For the truck i use road maps, on the farm i use GPS, for self steer tractors/harvesters, they work well on a farm as you enter your fields coordinates, never fails. Expensive for the satellite usage though but i do get it back at tax time.

Rand McNally's gps hands down. I use it mostly for to keep me away from low overpasses. I run the northeast and have never had a problem. I once was in buffalo ny and thought i knew better and didn't listen to my gps. I took myself right up to one of the many low overpasses. Luckily there was a nice right turn before the bridge. But i still have a road atlas just incase i need a backup and i always pretrip my route to figure how im getting there. And always when im in a new area i pay attention to the road signs. The gps likes to sometimes take me on a nice senic route and a road sign will let me know if im in in a bad place, weight and hight restrictions. Most places i seen are pretty decent in telling you before you get onto the road. And if all else fails, i say a little prayer and hold my breath and hope for the best. I still do that even if its an overpass i been through before. But alot of it is good ol common sense and knowing how to use every tool in your tool box.

Yeah, relying too heavily on the GPS is pretty much why trucks get stuck under low overpasses. And Google Maps isn't 100% reliable on that because they won't tell you which bridges are too low. More often than not, the GPS will screw you over. I say there's nothing wrong with using a GPS if you have the actual directions planned out beforehand. That way you can identify when the GPS is leading or misleading.

I use a truckers atlas with bridge heights and now also a truckers sat-nav (only since last fall). If I'm working for a fleet I'll ask regular drivers and usually get really valuable info like driving wide to avoid a metal pillar at the depot entrance or how bad the yard marshal is if you don't park and walk in first at another. If I'm driving into London at night I'll try and get the address from the company the night before and even walk the roads off the freeway to the site on Google Streetview. Part of this is to get me to places but also a part is to show how diligent I was trying to be if it goes wrong.

I quit using the paper atlas I would say around 10 years ago I can’t remember how long exactly. I hated those paper atlases, they were only good to get you to the city after that you had to call the customer which is of course not a truck driver and trust him to give you directions to the location. Which was hardly ever correct. Because they drove cars not trucks.

I'm in England and no such thing as a good truck now all the British brands got bought out and stop making we had some good motors ERF, foden ,Seddon Atkinson, layland all ran with good engines Cummins, caterpiller, Perkins, Detroit's, rolls Royce, and the school stuff you got a Gardner low horse power died on hills but ran on fresh air today's European offerings and just crap flimsy to many things to go wrong and most limited to 56 mph so when 2 are passing takes forever to get by but you cant beat a cabover

Sorry to hear that, but we as truck drivers are good or have to be good at changes and diversity. Thats what makes us professional drivers. Thank you for watching.

I cant control the amount of 5 sec adds. All I can say is youtube loves my over 20 min videos. I have the 2min adds shut off. But can't figure out how to number the amount. All I know is at 14 min videos theres not as many. I cant fit a day into 14 min.
