If anyone has an issue with calling a submarine a "boat", remind them 1. The German submarines were called U-BOATs, and 2. The greatest submarine movie ever made is called "Das Boot" (The boat).

Thank you for confirming that you were a bubblehead while in the Navy. My Brother in Law was also a bubblehead as well, but he also worked as an engineer so to say he tends to glow in the dark is the running joke between him and I. I am also a veteran and a Crayon eater so I even make jokes on myself, some of the best food I had was on board ships before going ashore. You have a friend in me for life and should you ever come to Northeastern Iowa let me know and I will make sure you have a room at the motel I work at and also have a great rate as well, plus we will share a drink or two as well. I think it was probably either Mush Morton or Richard O'Kane as they both had good little "try to take out a convoy alone " stories, O'Kane is not hard to find information on, but unfortunately Morton was accused of committing war crimes, and died in battle, most likely due to the whole possibly machine gunning survivors of a shipwreck thing, he was not awarded the medal of honor. So it's a bit less well known.

And well to be partially fair, to the Mk 14 torp, it worked as advertised, if set up and used correctly, as in the crew was trained how to actually use and adjust it for where you are and all that…if set up properly, it worked pretty damn good, but they didn’t train them/allow access to how to use it. If they had. Woulda been a much different story, with a lot more bang bang happen. And loss bong. As it bounced off, or nothing as it missed. And only woulda required minor fixes/improvements at that point.

Ummm... Well, kinda? The Mk.14 worked, but only after the depth sensor had been repositioned (production change #1), the magnetic exploder had been disabled (field mod. 1), the contact trigger had been replaced with a totally different design (production change #2), and the gyroscopic guidance had been fixed and made reliable (production change #3). After all that, and 2 YEARS of BuORD denying that there was any problem with their design, and that the lack of exploding Japanese shipping was user error, the Mk.14 BECAME a torpedo that worked as advertised. Until that point? Nope, not at all as advertised...

Calling a submarine a “boat” was supposed to be a derogatory statement that became beloved by submarine crews as it separated them from the surface fleet, it’s the same reason as to why British submarines fly the Jolly Roger, it’s because an admiral stated that there was no honor in commanding a submarine and that the men were no better than pirates, so the submarines adopted the Jolly Roger as their symbol because they were “pirates” in the eyes of the admiralty

Re: whose fault is the failing torpedos A device that is designed in a way where the normal fully trained users of that device cannot generally use it successfully, is a bad design. It’s like having the light switch on the left of a door and not the right. Users are going to intuitively reach for the wall to the right. Saying, “What? The switch is on the left. It’s not our fault your mental autopilot keeps reaching right (even though it’s to the right on every other door in the house).” does not absolve you of guilt. Yes, I went to school for that. I speak with authority. At least on this topic.

"You're old and crusty." There, now that that's out of the way, you are correct. It only takes about ten seconds to Google the definitions of boat and ship, and whether a sub is a boat or not. Answers I got were basically: "boats are for coastal waters and rivers, and ships are for deeper waters." and "a sub is technically a ship by definition, but it's been traditionally called a boat since it was first invented, so it's a boat." :) Also, yeah, I too hate watching people who suck at their job, especially government people. It's honestly why I try not to pay attention to much in the way of politics anymore. It's bad for my blood pressure.

Copy/pasted from elsewhere...because you talked specifically about subs being boats. LOL LOL...I noticed that Fat Electrician makes a pretty ironic mistake when he uses one of his taglines in this one...either that, or it is a pretty clever little joke. Fat Electrician loves to talk about the sin of messing with America's boats...but in the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese famously only attacked America's ships...since they deliberately did not attack the submarine base at Pearl Harbor...among other things....and submarines are technically boats not ships. 😁

And that is a great and fun game, a side note to that…don’t know how many of you have played Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts, it’s a fun game…I’ve played off and since since shortly after the beta release, it honestly only gets better over time, once they released campaign mode, hell yeah. I’m on newer campaign start, as Italy…I’ve taken half of the Soviet Union. Going on late 30’s now, including Armenia, Georgia. Western Russia. Northern Russia. All of Finland. Estonia, and crimea. Also own about 1/3 of northern/Eastern Africa, and best of all, Guantanamo bay, Haiti, Dominican Republic. Puerto Rico, ditch Antilles. And a handful of south pacific islands…I have the 5 th largest, but most powerful navy tech wise and effectiveness, and the worlds third largest economy and most oil production of any major nation/empire. It’s hilarious and so broken, I’ve broken history completely and the rest of the world is asking why as they look on in sheer terror at a once again ascendant Rome as I take over everything. Oh, I also own Corsica, cypress and Gibraltar, will soon own Tunisia. I’ve collapsed the British empire, the Spanish and the Chinese once in wars, best France so bad, shortly after they lost, they collapsed, about the collapse the Soviet Union. Haha. I have an oceans worth of 4000 ton DD’s, a handful of the last dreadnoughts, 5, upgraded to radar and shit like that, that I got years in advance, learned welding in the 1890’s…haha. Had turbines in 1898…rocking 24” electric torps since the early 1930’s…one on one my DD vs every CA I’ve run across will sink that CA, at least the last 20 years or so, every time. And most times my ship lives with light to medium damage. And that’s an AI/auto resolve battle, not me taking control. My naval prestige is almost triple the next highest. It’s just silly. I’m gonna rule most of the world by the time my campaign ends in 1950, haha. My main fleet is already enroute to eastern Russia to take that by sea. As I can’t reach anymore that way, and refuse to sign peace treaty for over a decade now with them, as I’ve been fighting everyone else but Germany. Austria Hungary and the US, literally fought everyone else multiple times by now. Spain fought me again. And o collapsed them again, they are soley owned by Germany and France, as I was busy fighting off the UK and French and Soviets, Chinese and Japanese at the time. So no ships to spare taking over former Spanish territory. Oh, I also got a lot of very good subs. Almost WWII boats in the 19 teens…I’m just about late war u boats in the mid to late 30’s…amd 65,000 ton BB’s 20,000 ton CA, 4000 ton DD’s haha. It’s so silly. But fun and funny. Love that game for the same reason I love HOI 4…breaking history. And being absurd/absurdly belligerent, and winning.
