Great video. I have been tryin to see what real world towing would be for this engine. It was cool to see you travel the same roads. Bob in Coeur d Alene.

I was pulling 11K with a 2013 F350 with the 6.2L, and the truck held up 'ok'. Then I was turned onto the Ram 6.4L. I found a 2015 Longhorn, and had it one day. It drives very nice, but have not hooked up yet. I did see just on the highway and around town that the mpg is much better than the Ford by at least 2 mpg better. You video has given me valuable info with what to expect. I too pull in WA and ID. Thank you.

No problem! Previously he had a 5.9 Cummins with 600ft lb and sure it pulled a little better but he doesn’t really miss it like we were worried about. The 6.4 really changed his thoughts on what gas can do. Once he had a 94 with the 318 5.2 and it couldn’t barely get out of its own way! Reliable engine though but gutless

I did 1250 miles in my '05 1500, 5.7 with 3.92s and LT245/70s. Hauling a 7K tandem, and with about 500 pounds in the bed and 300 in the cab including my fat ass. I averaged 9.8 between some gas stations, but mostly over 10, with a final total trip average of 10.2. This was far better than I imagined it would have been. Most of the trip was in 4th gear at around 65mph (around 2250 rpm), but there was plenty of direct drive up moderate grades, and it would come out of lockup if that wasn't enough. It wanted to hit second, but only once, and on a pretty step grade. I found the cruise control program in tow/haul mode was pretty darn intelligent overall. I don't think it matters too much with a fuel injected vehicle how much pedal you're using, because the injection system isn't going to give more gas if it's not getting more air. And more pedal isn't really going to do anything unless it drops to another gear.

Recently went about 1200 miles with my 2018 Ram 2500 with 5.7 towing escape 21 travel trailer, (about 3700 pounds). Two bicycles on front of truck, motorcycle in bed, and ladder racks with two kayaks on top as well as a lot of other stuff inside, and in the bed of truck. We got right at 11 mpg. Mostly flat roads though.

My 2013 3500HD GMC with 6.0 vortec w/6 speed auto, gets 9.5 MPG pulling my camp trailer of similar weight round trip from Utah to Colorado. But only gets 12 to 13 mpg empty with a tail wind. I like the new Dodge it's a nice truck.

Honest review

Beautiful country out there. When backing up the RV it’s best to use cell phones or inexpensive GMRS radios to have clear communication. With the radios you can have several on the same frequency especially in areas with bad cell reception. Also when backing up the RV if you place your hand at the bottom of the steering wheel you can turn the steering wheel the same direction you want the trailer to go rather than having to “think opposite”. Enjoy your new rig!

I taught myself when backing up small yard carts with a lawn mower. I learned that the angle the back of the tire is pointing is where the trailer will go. I also learned that small little trailers are a pain to back up!

FWIW - 2022 Ram 2500 long bed w/ 6.4L, 2WD, 8 spd auto, towing Grand Design MK2670- pretty much the same weight- and a 1300 lb golf cart in the bed @ 70-72 MPH on fairly flat interstate (Southeast US- some hills but no mountains) I consistently get 9 to 9.5 MPG. Without the golf cart I have hit 10.2 MPG.

I have the 2020 Ram 5.7 w/E-torque 1500 w/3.92 rear axle, gas 4x2. We bought the exact same trailer Jayco Jayflight 29 RKS about 3 weeks ago. Added the Blue Ox weight distribution/anti-sway hitch before the tow home (about 25 miles.) It tracked ok, but bounced so much, it was hard to carry on a conversation. We went on 3 “shake down” trips close to home (30 miles or less to each.) The trailer was much better when loaded with our stuff, however no water. We are about to go on a month long trip covering about 1000 miles, but are adding air bags before we leave, because the front end seems a bit light to me. I have never towed anything for any distance before now, and this is our first experience with glamping. My wife and I enjoy it a lot. I hope the air bags fix my issue, because I am beginning to think that I did not buy enough truck or we bought too much trailer. What do you think?

I know some will argue but this trailer is too big for a 1500. You don't have to exceed the trucks tow limit to exceed its payload capacity. When a manufacturer advertises towing its based on ideal conditions and an RV has more weight on the tongue than most trailers, (propane tanks, batteries, cargo bins up front...etc) let alone the body size so you're towing a big kite. I would really recommend a 2500 or 3500 for this trailer. You're going to add another almost 700lbs of weight with this trailers 80 gallon water tanks as well. If swapping the truck is not an option air bags will help take the bounce out and you can fill them to help the weight distribution hitch work better. I'd also recommend inflating your tires to 90% of their max PSI. The stock PSI is lower for comfort, you need stiffer. I have a Tundra which is a half ton and my camper is the Jayco 24MBH at about 6800lbs loaded with water. I tow some gear, generators and a family of 5. I'm slightly over the rated payload for my truck but I did put airbags in to smooth out the ride and they work great. My engine and transmission would tow more but after owning half tons and HD trucks my trailer is the biggest I want to tow with my family and gear. I told my wife if we ever get a bigger camper it means a new truck too. Hope that helps

I have a 2014 Ram 1500 5.7 8-speed 4x4. I bought it new and have had zero problems so far. Recently bought a 26’ toy hauler travel trailer. It actually tows it very very very well. My only concern is payload capacity. After factoring in passengers, hitch weight, etc., then I have to keep the truck bed completely empty. I have some weight to spare but i don’t want to be close to maxing out payload. I am all good with the tow rating. Payload is what truly is the weak link for me. Which is the only reason why I am considering a gas HD truck. So, having said that, sounds like you are in the same boat as me and having an HD truck would ideal.

Videos like this are very helpful as I'm on the cusp of trading my 2012 Laramie 1500 in on a newer used Ram 4X4 2500. I decided on a 2022 or newer Power Wagon for its better off road capability since we'll be trailering into some remote lakes and streams to enjoy Mother Nature and some fishing. The trailer we've picked out is the Coachman Apex Nano which packs a lot of utility into a 23ft trailer. The trailer's GVW is 4,400 lbs with a tongue weight of about 400 lbs so no problems there.

I'm also looking to upgrade from a half ton to an HD. Looking for a 2019 or newer 6.4L ram 2500.

Cool video with real world numbers. I currently have a 17' ram 1500 with the 5.7 with 3.21 gears. I tow a 5k TT and get between 7.5 and 10 mpg depending on if I'm headed east or west for cross country road trips. Looking at getting a new 2500 with the 6.4 and its nice to see what type of mpg I could expect. Always had diesels in the past but cant stand the emissions nonsense.

89 Fox I have a 19 Ram 1500 Classic, 5.7 Hemi with 3.21 gears. I’m really itching to buy a 2020 Jayco 267BHSW with the Rocky Mountians and Baja package. Total GVWR on the trailer is 7500 which I would rarely hit or exceed since 700 pounds of that is the water tanks. Do you see any reason my truck couldn’t handle it?

My ‘13 ram 1500 5.7 w/ 3.55 and 6 speed has same issue going from 4th to 2nd with my TT. I’ve pulled it cross country and the early downshift trick to 3rd is perfect (though it gets old). Still plenty of power but keeps rpm down.

@@0611shocker I think the gears are almost more important. But I’d never buy the 5.7 with 3.55’s again if I knew I’d be towing. I range from 6.5-8 mpg depending on wind, hills, and speed.

Just finished a 500 mile highway trip with my 2018 Ram 2500 limited 6.4 and 3.73. With the cruise control set at 65mph the truck averaged 19.3 mpg 500lbs of gear.

Good video I have a 2017 2500 with 6.4 and 4.10 gears. I plan on trailering a 5th wheel at about 9,000 dry and probably just under 11,000 fully loaded. I'm expecting probably 7 to 8 mpg on that setup at 65 to 70 mph. I have read a fair amount of reviews and seen videos and have come to the conclusion these trucks are not meant to tow in the 12,000lbs range of trailers at those weights it's time for the diesel engine.

Your absolutely right! I had an 18 6.4 w/4.30 rear that I use for my tree business. Towing an empty dump that weighs 5300 empty then gets heavier as the day goes on. It's a total pig anything North of 8k, and that's on flat central Florida roads. Recently I drove it to Orlando to pick up a mini skid. We're talking 8500 max, very frustrating and felt extremely under powered. Few times I've towed 11000, not something i would want to do on a regular basis out make a road trip with a camper. Anyway, problem solved last Sunday. Traded it fur a 21 Cummins HO w/Aisin! So happy to be back in the diesel. One week in and I can say, don't give a shit about what I paid for it!!!

Good video. I recently traded for a 14’ 2500 tradesman with the 6.4 3.73 4x4. I really like it. I tow 5,000 lb daily in my lawn care and landscape business. I average 9-10 with that in town stop and go driving. Highway it will average over 10. Highway unloaded it’s 15 mpg or better. I really like the truck a lot. The six speed is ok it seems to like to shift out of first and second gear to quickly pulling and unloaded and no matter whether tow haul is engaged or not. I went and test drove the new 19’ with 8 speed. Wow what a difference it makes. It’s a perfect match for the 6.4. Unfortunately I can’t swing a 19 with the new tranny. But the six speed is fine just have you learn how it likes to function and perform and use it accordingly.

Have had all three. Many Chevys and Ford's. For me, the Rams have held up the best.

I run 75 rear / 65 psi front tires

You can change the TPMS thresholds with AlfaOBD so you don’t get a low tire warning. I run 50 in the rear and 60 in the front without my trailer. With trailer I leave 60 front, 75 rear and just monitor it with the dash display and leave TPMS setting at 60-50

Dads Domain 👍 the AlfaOBD app is $50 for Android only. Not iPhone compatible. I just got a cheap tablet and then the obd link Mx Bluetooth adapter for the diagnostic plug from Amazon. You will need your 4 digit pin# to the truck which the parts counter at the dealer should give you if you just show proof of ownership

I love those flip Ram mirrors & Jeep/truck should hve them, but NOW wanting 2022 on cars & trucks to hve meaning able to lay truck/jeep on its side & support weight min of dragging test 300ft.

Yup know you have to calculate the mpg manually because the trip computer lies optimistically

Have a 2015 in the shop now with a broken valve spring, 61,000 miles. Service manager says its very common, 100,000 miles plus they apparently eat lifters and camshafts. My advice before buying one do your research, know what your getting into.

Nice mpgs for the load especially in a gasser….. Technology is definitely getting better in the gas engines/ transmissions……I know dodge has had some issues with their previous generations of hemi motors with lack of oil to the cam so the trucks that idled a lot ate cams and lifters…did they solve this on the newer motors?

I have 2018 2500 Tradesman 6.4 HEMI towing 2018 Keystone Outback 266RB, Dry weight is 6500. I took out on first trip using the tow mode and got 6.8 avg towing mileage. On the way back from the trip, did not engage the two mode and got 9.6 avg towing mileage. Only used the towing mode when in the mountains of Colorado. My GVW was 13,800 lbs

@@DadsDomain No. When in tow mode you are locked out of overdrive and thus you run at a higher RPM which translate into better towing ability.

@@williamgates4399 Tow mode also locks up the torque converter (TCC) so it's not slipping and will do better on engine braking as well as mpg and keeps trans temps lower.

@@scottleggejr I just experimented and decided not to use the tow mode. I was fine in the mountains of Colorado. What I am saying is this HEMI 6.4 is a hell of a engine and the tow package gives me everything that I need. I can see in some situations using the tow mode, but so far, I am pleased without using it. Thank you for your comment.

Damn that is better than my Ram Rebel with the 5.7 8 speed and l tow the same size trailer. I average about 8mpg on the money with no huge mountains. Just goes to show you how much more the smaller engine has to struggle vs the 6.4l and that doesnt take into account how much more a 2500 weighs.

If you want to improve performance, and take full advantage of the Hemi. Try a Pedal Commander. It has 32 settings to manipulate the throttle response to effectively customize the comfort level of throttle impute one desires( Eco, City, Sport, and Sport +)... huge delay, to darn near instant go. It will also mildly effect shifts. With in each mode Eco, etc etc. There is 8 settings to further fine tune to your liking. Plug and play, and will not effect warranty.

Pulsar box. Have one on my truck it’s excellent. Have an 2018 2500 Big Horn 6.4

That delayed shifting is EPA, fuel mileage based IMHO. My previous 2006 Sierra 1500 would shift as high and quick as possible when accelerating normally. Then if you were towing it would do the same delayed shifting and would shift into 2nd gear, if not 1st (4 speed trans), but got great gas mileage towing or empty. My current 2000 Chevy Silverado 2500 has much better shifting characteristics. Downshifts 1 gear earlier vs 2 gears WAY too late. Acceptable fuel mileage but I like it much better.

Thanks for posting this. I tow a 6000# dry weight TT with my Ram1500 (8 speed, 4x4, crew cab) and get around 8-9 mpg. I'm considering upgrading to the 2500 so I'll be more stable with similar mileage. I'll try to hold out for the '19 with the 8 speed.

You won’t even notice that trailer with a 2500!

2018 Ram 2500 6.4, 4:10 gears, 7000 lb travel trailer in New England 9.6 mpg average. My old 2004 Ford 5.4 with 4:10 rears was 8.25 mpg. The big difference is the Ram will maintain Road speed the Ford would flounder and rev like mad trying to hold 50mph. I absolutely love my 6.4 Ram.

5.4 in the 3/4 ton were no power house, now the 6.2 in my f250 is another story plenty of power with 3.73 gears pulling 8k I average about 11 to 11.8mpg.

@HalfShell I owned a few F150 with the 5.4 and back in the mid 2000s they had decent power, compared to the new motors from all makes today they really don't compare lol.

Good vid. 6 or 8 speed trans ? Rear gears ? Did you do a hand calc as the Ram mpg numbers are usually a bit high. To follow up… how have you been doing towing loaded ? Thanks

What gear ratio do you have to end up in 2nd gear. I have a 18 cummins that all have a 3.42 and the only reason I would even end up in third on a 7% grade would be trafic.

I have a '19 2500 6.4 crew. I'm wanting to make one 5 hr trip with it towing a travel trailer 31' 7k lbs loaded. Do you think if I run no more than 65 I'd be ok without a sway bar?

Gents, do you know what your truck's axle ratio is? It's prolly either 3.?? or 4.?? which will make a difference in both tow power and fuel mileage. The higher the #, the more tow power, but less mileage, and vice versa.

I have basically the same truck but with the Cummins + the mega cab and I have a Forrest river 26rks and like yours it’s over 32ft hutch to bumper weighing in at almost the same weight once it’s loaded up On a trip to WV from NJ with my Atv in the bed ... I averaged 10.8 MPG but I was also averaging 76 MPH / I also don’t run a weight distribution hitch

At those speeds the Cummins really shows a difference in lower revs and mpg.

2015 Ram 1500 QC Tradesman 5.7 Hemi 65RFE with 3.92 rear. I'm towing a Coachmen 293QBCK which with the load is probably around 7,500 pounds. It tows adequately, but gas mileage is relatively horrible around 8MPG. Factors that aren't helping are 20 inch wheels with 315-50-20 tires but the diameter is just about the same as the stock 17s that came on it. The transmission programming in this truck is awful much like my 04 was till I bought a flash programmer which woke the transmission up. 2015s require an unlocked computer to improve the transmission shifting. No bueno for me at $1,000.

Just put a tuner on it. See if the extra 25hp and 40tq can help that hill climb gear selection.

2nd gear on an 8 speed what is that like 25 Ish ? ... What was the grade % ? I'm curious how the 6.4 pulls a grade . I gross out around 17.5 total truck trailer load . I can pull Eisenhower eastbound at about 65-70 with 3.73 gears and 35 inch mud terrains . My truck is now 12 years old it works well but I'm thinking about another truck the 6.4 used are fairly cheap , but I don't want to be pulling the mountain grades at 35 mph ...lol ... My buddy got rid of his old V10 because it would only pull the grades at 30 . My buddy has a similar set up to me know with his 3rd generation 6.7 dodge but he can pass me on the grade I'm not sure if he has 4.10 in it since it's drw or if it's just that he probably weighs less considering his trailer and rock crawler are both lighter . Gotta go atleast 50ish on 7% it's not 1985 .

I'm sure you may have figured this out by now since the video is a year old. But the reason they call the trailer a 29 is because on travel trailers the number corresponds with interior length. So while the trailer is probably 35 or 36 feet long tip to tail, once you start narrowing down everything like tongue, bumper, wall thickness ect you're down to 29

Yep that makes total sense. A long time ago he had a Terry...pretty sure that was brand, anyways the length matched the number so at some point they changed that, but its what I remember.

What weight distributing hitch did you use?

I have worked for State, County, and City agencies. Some trucks see the miles. But others sit most of the time. And don't go very far. With Caltrans, some of the trucks stayed on ALL day for radio communications, or to run the rotator lights. The diesels tolerated the idling better. The diesels with an engine brake were the best. The diesels also went twice as far on a tank of fuel as the gassers. The exception was the Ford V10. If kept below 45mph cruising the shoulders. It would match the Cummins in power and fuel economy. Where gassers seem to always win. Is the payload within a weight/tax class. But really folks. All trucks are fun!!! Some adventures a Ranger or Tacoma is the way to go. Other adventures my Ram 1500 Ecodiesel is perfect. My wife's Ram 2500 Cummins is a brutal beast that has way too much power!!!! My daughter and son-in-law's Ram 3500 Megacab pulls their 32ft 5th wheel very nicely! All trucks are fun!!! But a Hemi with after market ignition coils, K&N air filter, and the Flowmaster 50 seies or the Pro series muffler. Will have good power and economy. In fact, in commuting use. A Hemi pickup as described, can beat a Cummins for fuel economy. It just can't match any of the new 1/2 ton diesels. My Ecodiesel with 3.92 gears gets 35-52 mpg driving 50mph (no boost). But only 25mpg at 70mph. But who has the patience to drive that slow!!!! A 5 hour trip seemed to take 10 hours!

Wow that’s amazing mileage out of the new half tons. Back in 2004 I think I I had a boss who wouldn’t look at a diesel so he bought a ford with the V10. He said it pulled great but he hated the gas mileage. My dads work trucks were Chevy 2500s with the 6.0 loaded up. He said they spent a lot of time floored but lasted a long time!

52 mpg on a truck- bull shit.

Our recently acquired 2017 3500 with the 6.4 averaged 7.1 thru NC mountains. The trans did overheat but I pulled over shortly after the overheat warning. Had it towed to a dealer. $900 later with new shift solenoids, filter and flush. It got us home to WI. It will still shutter a little I got heavy on a pull, hopefully it gives out before the warranty does. ;)

Plus the trans is supposed to be behind the 5.7, not the 6.4. Why it's the smaller trans in a one ton with a plow mount, goose and fifth wheel and a class 4 hitch is beyond me.

Is this with the 3:73 or 4:10's ?

I pull horses around with a 1500. 7k lbs. I put airbags in my coils and load them to 25psi out of 50 and it keeps the suspension dropped 2 in. Basically just levels it out. I'm going to be getting a gooseneck with living quarters. Loaded up with 3 horses I'll be at 10k. Putting more air in the bags will level out the suspension. The vintage says 10,640 towing. I drove truck for a living and have ran grossing 110k. So I'm not a nube at driving.

I have airbags on my tundra to make sure i level out the load nicely. My trailer loaded and cargo is around 7k. Feels fine. I once towed 4 yards of sand and I was way past capacity but with the air bags and being smart for the short trip it did better than I thought it would BUT when I ride in my dads 2500 I do feel the difference of 1500 vs 2500. I think a lot of normal drivers would be better suited in a 2500. If you drove truck for a living you have the experience to know what you can handle and whats stressing the equipment too much. But the average person towing 10k IMO should be in a 2500 after getting to be in both types of different brands over the years.

I recently purchased a 2020 Ford F-350 crew cab long bed with the 6.2 gas and 4.30 axle to tow my Arctic Fox 5th wheel trailer. I picked it up from Washington state and brought it down here to Arizona for the winter months. The truck has the 48 gallon fuel tank and I averaged 8.8 mpg pulling through the mountains. My trailer weighs in at 11,375 lbs. Wouldn’t trade it back in for the diesel just to increase my mileage to 16 mpg. I am from the northeast and diesel is 48 cents more per gallon

As far our forward driving went it was rock solid. The truck and trailer has absolutely no issues. My dad didn’t like how noisy it was though and adjusted it more after the dealer. It’s better now but he said it is noisy at times still. But as far as doing it job it’s fantastic. I should say my dads truck is a bit high too. He has a level lift and keeps air in the rear air bags he put in so he isn’t nose high. I told him to get a deeper drop hitch but he didn’t want to spend the money and said it’s close enough

What rear end gearing do you have? Also, do you know what percentage of grade was on your steepest incline?

I don’t know the grades but he has the 3.73

I was hoping to see an apples to apples comparison. The I-90 compared to the Hwy 2 routes are totally different, two passes and higher speeds vs flatter and lower speeds. Kinda disappointing.

2018 2500 6.4 Hemi here- there’s a bias with the computer MPG. If you calculate by hand you’ll find that the numbers are worse by about a 10% margin. Fast Lane Truck guys did a test for the big 3, and my results are about the same as theirs. Hand calculating a 7740 lb TT nets me approx. 7.9 mpg over a 600 mile trip TN to TX, so mostly level. Cruise generally set on 70. Just FYI- using the computer makes me feel better, but the numbers aren’t real... still a great truck though.

I was contemplating doing a hand calc trip but we would had to of gone a little ways out of our way to top off close to my dads house. I know him well enough to know that after that much driving he just wanted to go home so we stayed computer to computer! Good to know about the 10%, I was curious what it would be

Yeah my computer is close one out of ten times. I hand calculate pretty religiously. 2 mpg high seems to be an average for me.

Thats pretty good mpg for a 3/4 ton gasser. I can never get any more than 15mpg out of my Ford with the 6.2, and my old Chevy with the 6.0...maybe 12 lol I dont know why those were such gas hogs. I was always under the impression the 6.4 was the thirstiest of the 3 but it doesnt appear so from this video

I would love to see the difference between the 6.4, like yours and a 2500, same truck as yours with the Reg output 6.7 Diesel. The difference with power and mileage. At that average of at least 9-9.6mpg, that’s not too bad, what would a diesel get? I have a friend that has a 3500 HO SRW diesel, Crew Cab Big Horn that gets just about 20 MPG empty cruising, but still only about 13 mpg towing his 8,200 lbs Fifth Wheel! He says he has plenty of power to maintain all legal speeds, even on long highway grades, but passing on anything but flat highways an byways need planning! Nor I have a Travel Trailer for the wife an I, but it’s only a Forest River Cherokee Wolf Pup 16FQ, that only weighs in at just under 4,000 lbs GVWR. We tow with a 2019 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab W/T,4x4, V6/8 Speed Auto. Just commuting in moving traffic we get 20 mpg, in stop an go around 17-18, depending how I drive. When towing as high as 15 on the flats, as low as 10 in the hills at the speed limits. Passing is possible if done cautiously as there is al at plenty of power, I only hit the tow haul when going down the hills to take advantage of grade braking. This is actually our second Colorado, the first was a 2016,Ext Cab Z71,4x4, V6, that did such a good job, when the time came for just one vehicle after retirement the crew cab made more sense. We wanted to try the new Jeep Gladiator, but was at least 10k more with the same equipment and WIFI! Sure they are very nice inside and out, but actually do not ride and drive as well as the Colorado, that honestly does better all around than all the other mid-size pickups.

Wonder how much difference in the numbers if your were to have calculated off of actual fuel used. Meaning filling up and seeing how many gallons were actually used.i know mine in my 2500 Chevy is a little different from time to time. Sometimes better sometimes worse. But that's great mileage per gallon!

Honestly I think it would have been more than most would like to admin. Ram isn't the best with their accuracy. BUT my dad wasn't willing to go top it off after so I just used the computer for both legs to keep that part consistent.

You literally could've drove straight up the driveway then sight sided the trailer in...lmao but good job backing up.

How’s the power in this truck? Is it pretty quick? My dad has a 2020 5.7 hemi Ram and it hauls balls for a truck. I’ve always been curious if the 6.4 hemi is underpowered for a ram 2500.

The power is fantastic but it’s more of a torque power delivery imo. Don’t get me wrong it will rev and go but the 6.4 is a true truck motor where as the 5.7 is more universal. Challenger ram. Etc. the 6.4 wouldn’t suit a car for its power delivery

He has the Air Lift air bags on that one. No pump he just manually fills them.

I-90 was ridiculously bumpy on the way there so we wanted a different route home. It might have been better loaded but that truck empty sucked. But he has his tires up and air in his air bags

Yep, it will settle out and if you take it off the transmission hunts way too easy into the passing gear

What axle ratio is in that tuck? It should have a 4.10 to tow over 7k lbs well. 3.73 isn't enough

I just bought a 2015 ram 2500 with the 6.4 liter. I am having a hard time finding a shank 2.5 inch. I have a 2018 jayco 245 that I used my old half ton Sierra (2 inch receiver) to tow it with. I'm looking for a shank so I can still use my stablizer bars. Where did you get your towing stuff at? And it looks like you don't have a drop hitch? Thank you for your help and also nice set up!

I believe his shank came with the truck. I believe I have heard that some people have found them in their truck in the storage compartment in the floor in the back or with some of spare tire stuff. I am not a 100% sure but it’s worth looking. We got that WD hitch at the dealer. I was shocked that at its bottom height we towed flat. He has a level lift on and air bags. We had to drop the air bags to around 20, compressed and under load, but everything ended up great. He only really has the air bags for making the truck ride level vs a slight front rake. The 2500 with the 6.4 doesn’t need anything by default as the payload is really impressive.

@@DadsDomain I got lucky. It was on the lot with almost every feature I wanted. The exceptions are heated rear window, fifth wheel/gooseneck prep(had the dealer install it in the deal), bedliner(my buddy owns a rhino liner shop, so no big deal), and it is Maximum steel metallic(wanted silver). The color has grown on me, and my next will be the same.

Any transmission problems? Is there a dipstick for checking transmission fluid level?

It would make the take offs a little easier with the shorter gear ratio and possibly save a couple down shift here and there. From what I read on the forums it doesn’t really hurt mpg. If anything on flats the motor is in a better torque rpm and runs four cylinder mode more often

gooru 1, I own one. The 4.10 real helps when pulling especially on hills. My heaviest trailer is my dump trailer that when loaded down is around 11-12k ibs. It pulls it like a champ but speeds over 60 eat your fuel tank. But the 4.10 gets way better mpg in town with easier take off. If your not pulling much or you just need a grocery getter stick with the 3.73. Better highway mpg. The 4.10 is for pulling and better in town mpg

I have a 17 3500 Chassis Cab 6.4 SRW with 4.10 rear. Truck gets max 15 mpg avg driving very conservatively. Average is around 12 to 14 mpg unloaded. Truck does not like going above 70 mph very much. Towing a single car I barely notice it's back there.

With 4.10 engine speed is higher, but it holds gear better and less strain on transmission because of gear ratio.

I get 15 mpg in my Cummins towing bout 9,500 lbs. Over 20 empty. CUMMINS>powerjoke durawhat? Hemi ha. 410 gears are best for the gasser.

@wzrubicon 1 well I have both diesel for work and gasser for winter and groceries. Plus I do all my own maintenance which saves a ton. $408 for fuel filters and oil changes, I do them for $170 all together 100 for fuel filters and 70 for rotella t 6 5 w 40 all temp syn. Do it yourself no ones touches my truck.

@wzrubicon 1 That's decent. Was there a point though? I've been working in asphalt for over 20 years, and make on average $10,000 a driveway/ parking lot. And only work 6 months out the year and hunt till Feb. How did this become a dick measuring contest?

@@davedouglass5286 With enough cooling capacity, a well-built, big cube, big block Chevy will easily make 600 hp all day for long periods of time.. this will take money, a lot of money to build and mpg will be single digits but no 5.9 cummins on the planet can make that kind of sustainable power for long periods of time (they can obvious make the torque but not the power) and deal with the heat.. If we in America had access to cheap, high-quality, high-octane gasoline kind of like we did in say 1969... diesel pickups wouldn't exist today. was old school big blocks were killed off by multiple fuel crisis and the advent of government mandated emissions standards and fuel economy requirements. If modern engineering and design were applied to those old school big blocks, we'd have some real monsters. Check out Raylar Engineer's page here on youtube.

I also have a 19 ram, 3.5 Rough Country lift, 35 inch mud terrains, 3.96 gears, k&n intake, cat back exhaust, with 20×9 wheels, and my camper is a 36 foot 2018 Sunset Trail, 6,7000lbs and was averaging 11-12 at 60mph. I was NOT happy about how the camper was throwing the truck around.. UNTILL I did the Hellwig Sway bar upgrade with adjustable end links AND Air Dog 1000 bags inside the springs.. I cant began to explain the difference.. Its completely opposite.. my ram whips that trailer around like it's not even there now..

Is the performance of the 6.4 (410hp 429tq)really that much better than the 5.7 (395hp 410tq)? It dont seem like that much of a power bump in HP and TQ, at least not on paper. With everything else being equal such as gearing and both in the 2500.

Its not about peak horsepower and peak torque as far as towing is concerned . It's where in the rpm range of the engine it makes those numbers and the lower it is the better it is for towing .

@Xxplicit I have been looking for dyno charts on the 6.4L, there is not much out there for the truck engine in regards to the power band. From what I can tell the 5.7 is 320tq at roughly 1200 rpm and goes to 400tq @ 4000 rpm. Both engines hit peak torque at 4000 rpm, the 6.4L has a bigger initial jump and flatter gain to 429 tq @ 4000 rpm. I know the truck engine and car engine uses different internals and the truck is detuned, but I am going to assume the torque output is in similar fashion with lower number.

Looks like that RV is riding a little bit high in the front

Good eye, it was installed by the dealer a little high. My dad has adjusted it some since but IMO he still needs a hitch with another inch drop. But it is better when he tows now

Meanwhile my pos 18 2500 laramie gets 7mpg city and 10 highway empty lol all stock with 3500 miles. Dealer has had it for 3 days fixing something causing a handful of various issues. If the mpg isnt drastically better after the repairs im immediately trading to chevrolet

Oh man that sucks. That seems like something must be wrong. I know the old gm 6.0 got 12mpg all day long but it only had 4 gears! Hope they sort it out for you. May want to contact Chrysler too if necessary

Yikes! My 16 2500 Laramie 6.4 gets 15 city and 18 highway with a 3" left and oversized offroad tires ... definitely something wrong internally. I get about 9-10 mpg when towing our 35' travel trailer @ 9500 lbs

Im assuming something had to be wrong seems that most everyone gets fantastic mpg from their 6.4.... im a person who has been known to get higher mpg than what the car is even rated for, i know how to drive for peak economy.
