Bakshi was killing in the 70s. Yeah, the animation was sometimes rough, but the character's designs and 𝘴𝘰𝘶𝘭 of the stories are amazing. He demonstrated what animation could be, which is not just cute animals and princesses

The NAACP approved it. And it's not like Bakshi is a tone deaf white guy: he was born in Palestine and is an American immigrant. He might not 'get' the African-American experience, but he understands marginalization, social failure, a whole lot of things that affected and still affect African-Americans. He's a brilliant observer.

@raya You've literally never watched the film if that's what you're getting from this. Ralph Bakshi grew up in an impoverished black neighborhood, and did way more to represent black music and culture than most others at the time. He was by no means looking down on or trying to stereotype black people. He was simply representing the environment he grew up in, when others at the time would rather make happy-sappy Disney bullshit.

This reminds me of The Jazz Singer. It was a movie made by a white Jewish man and it about a Jewish character who is enamoured with Black culture and wants to sing jazz music to the disapproval of his conservative father. It also features the main character spending most of the movie in blackface. Thing is, I don’t think The Jazz Singer has the self awareness this does. Here the racist imagery is intentional, it’s meant to be shocking and upsetting and disturbing. In The Jazz Singer blackface is treated as a liberating symbol of blurring the lines between races, as a metaphor of mutual suffering. Al Jolson, the star of The Jazz Singer, is today known as the king of blackface. He performed in thousands of minstrel shows. He was also a fierce supporter of racial equality who read about two Black musicians being denied service at a restaurant and personally tracked them down to invite them out to dinner. They became lifelong friends. I don’t want to suggest that these positive things mean that these movies and others like them are beyond criticism. To do so is just as foolish, possibly more so, than dismissing them as racist without analyzing them further. What I want to convey is that this shit is complicated. There are valid reasons to love and to hate both of these works. What’s important is to actually engage with them.

Are you kidding, I haven't seen the movie yet but I can tell that it'll be WAAAAY better than Song Of The South-only ten minutes of annimation and the rest being a boring period drama that's about as exciting as watching cheese age!

Song of The South is cute, but you’re right… It’s one of those slower paced family films, that doesn’t have a lot of excitement. Many people haven’t seen it, simply because the non-animated scenes are kind of tedious.

Please don't bring Sausage Party into this. Adult animation from the 70s and 80s was brutal, uninhibited, and masterful. Nothing was off limits, because things needed to be said. Nothing today would be the same, especially with purity police sjws trying to cancel everything that doesn't kiss liberal ass. Bakshi may be gross but he was an artist. Movies like Sausage Party marketed itself on being offensive for fun, instead of social commentary that happened to be disturbingly offensive.

You bringing up "sjws" and "liberals" really shows how young and sheltered you are. Back in the dsy conservatives did all of the censoring and "purity policing." They were the ones that bakshi got backlash from. We wouldn't have films like this if they got there way.
