God, how expensive would it be to make a sequel with all these stars in 2020? RDJ, Keanu, Ryder and Woody. The budget back in 2006 was only $8.7 million.

It's not that movies were cheap back then it's just that this particular movie was. I mean that whole budget was probably just the actors paychecks. It's not like the movie has any crazy over the top cgi effects. I mean look at other movies from 2006 they almost all average 100 million or more in budget. Even pirates of the Caribbean from 2003 had a budget of 140 million dollars so this movie was not meant to be top of the line best of everything it was a cheaply made movie but with lots of star power which is what they blew the whole budget on obviously. So making a remake would still cost well under 100 million dollars unless they decide they want more actors or better effects for whatever reason. Either way this movie was cheap then it would still be relatively cheap now. Probably around 20 million to account for the fame of the stars today being greater than it was and them probably wanting more money for their time.

Such a great, underrated movie. I love rotoscope. It’s perfect. It looks like a live-action graphic novel, and it’s surreal and psychedelic, almost feels like you’re on drugs, it makes you feel like the characters with their struggle differentiating reality and a warped perception because of “Substance D.” Most people don’t know how brilliant the story is. It’s very sad, though.

Animated films have really gone downhill in the last 15 years. The CGI animations released today aim for realism (missing the point of the medium), and end up looking a fraction as interesting as this, or the traditionally animated films of the 80s and 90s. It's time for a revival.

This whole movie has a tangible quality to it. Like a parallel universe just a slip away from reality. A world I'm terrified to visit, yet somehow want to live in. They filmed the actors then digitally painted over every frame. The technique is called rotoscoping. Disney did it more subtly back when they were using hand drawn animation. It looks cool but there are shots where it looks a little wonky because someone got sloppy. It probably is the same technique as the GTA art.

It's crazy how such a great film with a completely A list cast could be so underrated.
I remember when this movie came out, my dad had a video rental store and everybody was like "omg I got this movie because of the Matrix guy but it's crap", I was young so I couldn't barely understand Matrix besides the action. Now I'm almost 30, I watched Scanner Darkly again and all I can say it's one of the most underrated movies ever, this is pure art.
It took me a while to fully appreciate this movie. The story turned me off at first but on repeated viewings, A Scanner Darkly became one of my favourite movies of all time.

The best aspect of this film is the subplot. At the end you realize what has really been going on the whole time, how the audience has been unknowingly taken for a ride just as much as Arcter. It's what makes this film so great for multiple viewings. You start picking up on the little dialogue easter eggs scattered throughout. Neither Arcter nor the audience realized Arcter was being conditioned and positioned for one of the most top secret clandestine missions in the country. The real question is will he ever know it?

It's actually worse today, because it's not just some small-time company, but a two-pronged attack, the CCP pushing Fentanyl through Mexico, while the WEF pushes other stuff through other vectors, including the war against our children, gender confusing them and pumping their heads full of samethink. The whole world seems to be at war with the US, probably because we're the last bastion of freedom on this god-forsaken planet. There's so few places in the world left, where you can openly criticize the government, and where there's a huge cost and set of risks associated with trying to shut down even just 1 person. They go after old people, mild-mannered women and gangsters who's most deadly possession is a Hipoint that ftfs on the third round on a good day. These ensure accolades and a Raid they can return home from. However, if they start going door-to-door at random, they may starting running into the hardcores, and then they won't be returning home after mission. No other country I can think of, allows the citizens that kind of power. So, they want to extinguish this country, its morale, its economy, its people and most of all, its consitution.
@manictiger
Жыл бұрын
It seems like fragmented thought, but it's not. All of this stuff is connected. From the identity politics, to the drugs, to the constant media lies, the CCP balloons, diluting the USD into the ground, etc. Every single action is being taken to try to destroy the U.S. Drugs are just a tiny little facet of that. Sometimes the CCP just has to fan some flames; sometimes the WEF has to light some.
Rdj and Keanu Reeves...my two favorite stars ❤and my KZread recommendations know it
I saw this on TV when I was 10, too young to get it or remember much of it. But that scene where the guy kills himself and then is read a list of his sins for eternity, and the narrator says 'He wished he could take back the last half hour of his life,' that scene stuck in my head for years.
“Seven years from now, This will end up in your recommendations”
Been trying to find this movie for YEARS.

Proof that Keanu Reeves just became popular a month ago. Before that, he was the "Woah" guy and the "I know kung fu" dude.

@@lalaelien not realy. I like Keanu Reeves, i just hate how everybody just loves someone all of a sudden for the only reason that the media thold them so. And after 3months every one forgets those people even exist.

What about that film with the bus? The bus that could not slow down or something? Heard that was big in the 90s...

Just got this in my recommended. How have I never heard of this before? It looks like a comic book, and it has RDJ and Keanu in it. This sounds awesome.
No clue how the KZread recommended algorithm works, but between the recent boom in Keanu Reeves' popularity, Avengers Endgame and Stranger Things it's possible that this video is being recommended as a perfect cross-section of what's big right now.
I first seen this in 2015 and thought where do they hide this little gem I've now watched it several times and it just gets better with time it's currently 2023 December 12 804 p.m. GMT
I literally watched this yesterday for the first time in years on amazon. Then first thing this morning I see the trailer in my recommendations. Are they watching me?

One of the most misleading trailers in film history. Portrays the film as a conspiracy thriller when the actual film is a character study about drug abuse.

probably had to do this to make it appear more "sexy" ... it doesn't need it tho, it's a great movie, one of my all time favorite.

You just gave away the spoiler to the whole film. The main character/audience doesn't know it's not a conspiracy thriller.

I mean the reason I watched it was because I thought it was a conspiracy thriller, but I still ended up enjoying it. So it could be to get people more interested. It is REALLY misleading nonetheless, though
Talk about a movie that was ahead of its time, in more ways than one.
I have loved this book and movie dearly for years and y’all just recommending it to people now?!

How tf do I only find out about this movie now in 2022!!!?!? Oh I have to watch this immediately!
I have never heard of this until today but have had every reason to know about it the day the trailer went up.
This was actually a year after i was born, and my wish of Robert Downey Jr. & Keanu Reaves in one movie was already made.
Oh boy.. KZread, you recommend this to me on September 29, 2019 ?
Underrated?.... Definitely, Brilliant performances and overall a Brilliant film, some people hated the animation but I personally liked it a lot.
This movie was ahead of its time. Have they even made something with the same art style since?
This is such a great movie. One of my favorites.
I love how every mention or attempt to "funny" off this movie in the comments section, are only references to media and items that came out AFTER this movie.
It's interesting to read reactions to this trailer from people who've never heard of the movie. I'm going to assume they are young people. I wonder if local rental stores were still around, if the reaction would be the same. Movie rental stores, especial the independent ones, like libraries, were great places to browse and see older titles. Store employees would curate themed collections to reveal titles one might've not happened upon before or considered renting. I don't know how people connect to movies today that aren't served to them the way they are now. I used to watch trash and gold because of the cover art and short descriptions. It's funny because youtube algorithm is kind of like the old video rental employee.

You should start writing more about that for younger generations. That is a very smart way of thinking and I'm not being ironic here.
THIS IS THE MOVIE!!!! THIS IS THE MOVIE I'VE BEEN SEEKING OUT FOR OVER A DAMN DECADE!!! I got a very brief glance at the trailer once on TV, not even a good 3 seconds. Never saw the trailer again, never even saw the title of the movie. Nothing to guide me on this search yet every now and then I would have a quick flash of that same scene in my mind. it haunted me well into adulthood, but after all these years, the mystery is finally solved... I can finally buy this movie and put my mind to ease before I pass on to the next life...
Wild how this trailer doesn't even reveal how crazy it gets. Amazing
The song is Teen Angst by M83, if anyone's wondering.
Never seen this film but the art reminds me of waking life

The director used the same effect, it's called rotoscope. The rotoscope is a machine, a technique that allows you to draw or "re" draw movie frames to give it a surreal animation.
It's been 7 years and still holds up

Think it fit the story more this way. It wouldn’t have the bleak and trippy feel to it, if it was live-action

RDJ left post-its with his script written on them all over the set as he knew it would be drawn over later on. So it probably wouldn't look too professional :D

The live action version would be awful, the rotoscope technique they used not only allowed the seamless transitions for the hallucinations, but gave every thing a unreal quality that perfectly matched the plot and story. You just couldn't do that with live action.

i got this in 2019 great KZread recommendation
Kind of imagined it like this when I read the book...Philip K Dick was a damn genius
that film surely is not about drug addiction, the drug addiction topic is only what you can see on the surface of the plot, the film goes way more deeper than a story about drugs
This bad boy was ahead of it’s time.
Reeves, Downey, Ryder, and Harrelson... plus Richard Linklater. Thank you KZread recommendations.
