John wick is not a villain. Morally deprived protagonist, yes. He kills, but only those who have caused him harm. Basically he is an anti hero
@Eri587
Ай бұрын
No, an anti hero is someone who seeks the greater good through horrible means, a villain ultimately does evil for selfish gain. John Wick is a tragic villain, he doesn't kill the mafia boss because he sells drugs, kidnaps, rapes and tortures the innocent and is overall evil, he kills the mafia boss because he refused to give his son who killed his dog when all he wanted was to chill, he didn't want to go on a murder spree but he ultimately did because someone did something bad TO HIM, not because someone did something bad to anyone else.
@kshietijdas5241

@@Eri587 that's not always correct. An anti hero does not fight for the greater good. A vilain harms the innocent, an anti hero doesn't. The villain finds solace in harming the innocent but an anti hero doesn't.

Step One: Cast Keanu Reeves
that was the saddest part of the John Wick Series. In the first movie he was truly terrifying, but after that he lost this aura of a real reaper, someone who instills fear in even the most harden criminals. They were good movies and i watched them all and i enjoyed them, its was just a bit sad to see him become just a real good hitman and not the "Baba Jaga" he was in the first movie.
@Slash4747
7 күн бұрын
I liked it personally. He did start off as the vengeance driven reaper you mentioned, but was futher humanized as the movies went on. We saw his friends like Caine, his connections like the Ruska Roma and Winston. Imo, he didnt stop being the "Baba Yaga", we just got introduced to the world the Baba Yaga walks around on, making him feel "smaller" in a way since we got introduced to people with the same or even greater intimidation factor as him (Koji, Caine, D'Antonio, more High Table people like the Harbinger, and of course Marquis). I loved that part because the movie gave them this high ass pedestal yet made you feel that yeah, John can take these guys on. The movies balanced out the intimidation due to the unknown with the world building and depth to Wick's motives
@TheBenjdude
2 күн бұрын
Related to what you are saying: in the first movie, it seemed like the more experienced the bad guy, the more terrified of John he was. In subsequent movies you never really see people crapping their pants because John is coming for them. You just see them thinking they can take him and then being wrong. I just wish we had seen more people saying "OK, I will fight him. I'm definitely gonna die now."
@ReinZero
2 күн бұрын
@@TheBenjdudei wanted to see that aswell. But you have to realize that the Baba Yaga that people talk about when John was in his prime was the unstoppable and untouchable assassin they heard stories about. But what they see here and now is a reaper that bleeds plus the people thinks that they can take him with numbers on there side. It emboldened them.
I really liked John Wick, but I'll always remember seeing the 4th installment at the Paris Grand Rex. When John speaks with the continental owner here, he says something like "I'll kill them all" in a very strange delivery and the whole room burst laughing.

true facts my friend!
What makes John truly terrifying is no matter how many times he goes down, he keeps getting back up. He's beat up, you think he's almost lost the fight, then he gets back up and somehow, staggered and bruised, kills his opponent. Dude just perseveres through everything

My favorite part of the first movie that made me go "Oh . . . Fuck." was when the mob boss is questioning his son about what happened between them and he then spits out in the most calmest voice you, but you can tell why is pissed, "You burned his house . . . And killed his dog?" and pretty much after that he's saying "You just fucked up in the most catastrophic way that I wish I wasn't even associated with you." Really cemented exactly how much John was respected and feared. Then there's the whole "He's the guy you hire to kill the Boogeyman." bit which was the sugar on the cream.
Something I haven't seen yet is another meaning of descending 7 steps, which is violence is the 7th layer of hell in Dante's inferno

One more thing that makes John unstoppable and terrifying. He's Keanu Reeves.
I’ve loved the franchise since I first watched. But I never realized scenes like the beginning in chapter 1 are a sign of symbolism. Nice work on explaining the symbolism
John wick Series is a top 10 movie series imo and one of my favorite protagonist
the first time i saw this i immediately felt the awe of pressence when the cops showed up. not for wick's ability to kill, but because he has *power* over everyone else in the film. you know nothing of his past yet and it still tells you EVERYTHING. i just remember chuckling because i was so excited to see everyone's reactions to him. yeah, that's right, its john wick. AHHHH!
The first time I watched John Wick, a couple years after it's release, I was blown away. I thought it was a really well thought out and written movie. The second and third, not so much. And I'm glad the fourth finally put and end to this story that didn't need to go beyond the first chapter.
Leaving an 🌟 to this gigachad. Amazing analysis!
bro your shit is awsome! please keep putting these videos out this is a literal gold mine for good content!
Something about John Wick 1 are the subtle lines hinting John is the kind of man you never want to cross. Even if you have a lot of power. People over-rate Viggo’s exposition about John being the “one you send to kill the boogie man”. But Aurelio’s “the owner, did you kill em?” and “How do you know what Viggo does and doesn’t like? ‘Tell you somethin, he’s gonna understand” are gems. It subtly explains how Viggo would agree with the gravity of the situation- punching Yosief himself later. And that if you hit John, you better make sure he never gets up again.
John Wick puts the ''pro'' in ''protagonist''

Cool video bro
The point about Jhon also taking hits is real. I was watching Beekeper the other day, and while the movie is entertaining, the fact that the beekeper only gets hit by the "final boss" of the movie and was obviously in adavantage in that fight scene made the film quite boring. An utterly invencible protagonist is boring, we want to see the protagonist struggle.
There are plenty of hate-able villains in fiction but I wish there were more protagonists in fiction who were feared or managed to become feared over the course of the story. Someone perfectly willing to victimise the said villains. (with who is a "villain" being determined on the basis of the reasons that caused a character to harm someone ... usually, a villain is the one causing harm without provocation). Way more interesting.
Its the small details that make this movie so good things as simple as when the garage owner pours john a drink he pours him peligroso tequila. Peligroso translates to english as *Dangerous*
i think the bulletproof suite took away the sense of danger that the first movie had. he was basically invincible and there was less of a sense of risk to me.
All I could think about during the stair scene of John Wick 4 was the panel of Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff. "I warned you about the stairs bro"
1:01 the sound effect was so unexpected 😂
It’s crazy how Wick is far from the typical hero type yet you’ll root for him because of how good the story telling is.
I think the seven steps is definitely a nod to the seven layers of hell as he's descending in to a world of hell, back from the 'dead', etc
Goodnight, Jimmy!
John is a hero with the visage of a villain
This movie is ten years old!
...make Keanu Reeves try to emote. Terrifying.
true
Damn, dude. We gotta save your family from Markipliers basement!! **Subbed**
It hurts me to hear him called "Baba Yaga", given that nickname is translated there as "Boogeyman", because "Babaika" or "Babai" is a direct boogeyman counterpart, being a night spirit described as old man, yet not possessing a distinct physical form, that snatches the nasty children who doesn't stay in bed, while Baba Yaga is nowhere near, being an embodiment of a wild forest, appearing as on old witch who files a wooden mortar and lives in a hut on the chicken legs, lures in and eating children or assisting heroes to fight a greater evil. I get where the confusion came from, considering "Баба Яга" and "Бабайка" sounds very similar in Slavic languages, but I first can't get over it and cringe every time. And also in my head canon every event beyond the first movie is a dog's dream, because the franchise went full on into a Marvel's level bullshiterry, I've barely made it through the second part and couldn't get myself to finish the third - my already battered beyond all reason suspense of disbelief snapped hard during the stables fight, at which point I was already winded up by teams of assassins flatly ignoring all the chances to finish John off, but when one of them decided to shoot the gun on the floor to prevent Wick from reaching it instead of going for a headshot (which he was clearly capable of, considering how fast and precise he was with recognising and hitting such a small target on the floor) or at least few shots into body to get him off balance and close in for a kill shot...
To be fair "protocol" if you fall is to roll and spread out the impact, but yeah, that was goofy lmao
wait so.. keanu is actually a possible john wick irl, thats crazy. luckily he's a sweetheart haha

I've been asked what's one movie that is guaranteed to make me cry. I replied, "John Wick." People think I'm joking. I am not. That Viggo's sone took the last thing John's late wife gave him to help him grieve her loss is inexcusably tragic, and there's no apology or restitution that could make John whole again. He had truly lost the last of the only thing he truly loved, and the only solution is cold, hard vengeance.
Would love a movie from an enemy's POV being hunted by john
phenominal editing
Could the 7 step could be the descent through the 7 rings of hell ? Meaning he descend further and further into the hell he was once in.

John Wick is the definition of a man whose reputation precedes him. What I loved about the series is that how consistent this always was. WIth each movie, we really see what John is capable of. If he wanted your life, he will take it. He will take on an army armed from head to toe. He will go through a wave of bullets. He will cross any ocean or dessert. You can shoot him, you can cut him, stab him, run over him, or throw him 5 stories high. But if he manages to survive he will keep coming after you. The walls of the continental will not keep you safe. Even the high table wont protect you. So when go back to this scene, its so satisfying because we know Viggo is not lying. John's reputation precedes him so much, even his enemies can't deny him respect.
