Fun fact: this was directed by a female director, Lexi Alexander. She was a former professional stuntwoman & competitive Karate champion, before becoming a director/producer. And get this, the studio wanted to tone down the violence, but she fought tooth & nail to have all the ultra-violence & gore in it.According to an Interview, her concept for the movie was to make it a live-action MAX Punisher film. Nowadays she works mostly on tv-series as a producer/director. R.I.P. Ray Stevenson, may Mars look favorably upon you!

I liked the Thomas Jane movie, but it wasn't Punisher. The Punisher doesn't manipulate a bad guy into killing his wife and best friend. PWZ was truer to the Punisher, but it was ridiculous and tonally uneven (especially with the weird comedic turn of Jigsaw and LBJ). I didn't love it, but I loved Stephenson. To date, I don't think anyone has done the Punisher real justice (no pun intended), but PWZ was the closest we got.

Also worth noting is the entire Thomas Jane movie was an origin story. We never got to actually see Thomas Jane at 100% Punisher levels till the end. Conflating the two is very difficult if not impossible. Both men loved the character and tried to get a second film for themselves because they had something to prove, let's just leave it at that.

The night this film came out, Garth Ennis was doing a signing at a comic shop across from my apartment complex in Florida. Unfortunately, 20 year old me was too preoccupied with trying to hit on the girl behind the counter, and it wasn't until about 8 years later that I finally watched it. I remember feeling giddy because FUCKING FINALLY, Frank was on screen doing what he does best. Ray's presence in character finally felt right and, while bits of "War Zone" teeter precariously into schlock territory, the film as a whole still occupies a slot as my highest ranked adaptation. Fuck you, Marvel, you've effectively killed off the only character that brought me to give you assholes money.

The villains were terrible, that's why imo. They should've just made straight up gangsters be the villains, it would've felt better. The villains felt like shitty 2 bit idiots (they were) so it never felt like Punisher had a serious or competent threat to deal with. They should've used the "I killed a fed" angle to actually play into corruption inside the government more, working with the mobs, and punisher dishing out justice to all flavours of criminals while they try to hold the spouse of the good guy he killed hostage rather than some random minor lackey who got made ugly. Other than the really, really poor villain plot, the movie absolutely kicks ass. Every action scene is awesome. The banter scenes with Punisher are awesome. If they tightened the overall plot up into something a little more tense and leaned into even more morally grey territory (where the Punisher isn't just shooting cartoonishly evil people, but for example, corrupt officials who facilitate them, too) - it would've been an absolute 10/10 banger.

This is the best Punisher movie for me and Ray Stevenson's portrayal of Frank Castle is superb. Everything looks real and natural the way he portrays the Punisher. You can even see in his eyes the way he focus on how to kill his enemies, that he is thinking whats gonna his next move after his current kill like playing billiards, after taking the shot, how and where he needs to place himself to be on the advantage for his next kill and so on until he finishes everyone. You can see and feel from his face to his body language and even the way he holds his weapon and the way he squeezes the trigger the anger and rage inside him against criminals but in a quiet manner but not with the satisfaction and joy just for the sake that he killed someone. You can tell that he is doing it for a reason. That there is a story deep inside him why is he doing it. That no matter how many he kills it wont be enough as a retribution for what happened to his family which leads him to become who he is. And you can feel that every shot he fires, every muzzle flash emitted whenever he pulls the trigger he gets flashbacks of his family, flashbacks of the day they were mercilessly murdered. He wa able to perform all those formula in being the Punisher in a natural and most of the time in a silent way.

Punisher: Warzone is the only Punisher movie that was worth the name. I 've seen the one with Dolph Lundgren and I couldn't figure out what exactly it had to do with the character. The only thing that the Thomas Jane version had to do with the Punisher was the skull, although they screwed that up too by painting it on a t-shirt rather than body armor. Warzone is a Punisher movie which I actually recognized, enjoyed, and watched more than once. Thank you for highlighting this gem which so many people missed (probably because the previous versions sucked so horribly). R.I.P. Ray Stevenson, you succeeded in truly bringing one of my favorite characters to life.
