Radical SR3 - Oulton park crash

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Driving at Oulton park in 2020 Bikesports race. It has just rained before we went out. I switched to wet tyres but when we went out the track was mostly dry.....apart from the run off areas 🙈

    That was great driving, you were fast everywhere apart from maybe Druids where the entry looked a bit too cautious to me and I know there's a bump half way through there and it's scary as hell!! There were a few warning sign that the tyres were on the way out during the previous lap. Armchair critic!! All the best for the future.

    What caused the crash was the double lift off the throttle into T1 that was a killer because if he lifted off only once later into the corner and committed the downforce would've been enough to push the car down and prevent the massive oversteer moment on the slippery curve, lift-off basically got rid of the areo downforce and made it mechanical which was a danger as the tyres was already worn on a wet runoff. This is what separates the pros against good track day drivers, sometimes being committed and extra aggressive with the car is the faster and safer way..

    Lovely drive and great to watch, especially as you worked your way through to what I assume was 2nd pos. Could sense some tyre degradation a few laps prior and perhaps a few slight lapses in concentration. However, despite those high speeds, you seemed to shunt gracefully with what was hopefully minimal damage - and none to you! Certainly you remained calm and in control post impact. Cheers and thanks from an ex (kart) enthusiast and small time racer, Dave

    Thanks for the comment. After the accident your kind of in shock I guess…You can see in the video I’m trying to restart to car thinking I might be able to carry on. Took me a few Seconds to realise I went in too hard so probably not going to be possible. I got taken to see doctor to make sure I was ok, then waited for car to arrive back in paddock so we could assess damage. We are run by a team (RJ motorsport) who quickly made a list of parts we needed to get back out for the 2nd race. Some we had in our spares box some we had to beg steel and borrow from our fellow competitors (always good to maintain a good relationship with other drivers/teams in case you need their help on a weekend). Once we had parts about 3-4 of us jumped on the car replacing some of the front and rear suspension components on right hand side. One of the brake discs was shattered as well so had to be changed. One wheel was bent and some bodywork damage had to be patched so we could get out. Just about managed to get out in next race. We managed to buy some 2nd hand parts from larger teams that run in Radical challenge which helped keep bill down but all in all was Probably about a £1250 accident. Would have been much more expensive had we used new parts not 2nd hand. Good luck hope you manage to get out racing. We now racing sports 2000 which are much cheaper to run. Radicals are very expensive

    @@jamesbarwellracing2096 Thank you so much for such a fast and detailed response. with RJ motorsport did you own the car and get track support from the team? @@rtreyk we owned the Radical and kept it at home in garage. We did the basic prep on it before a race (nut and bolt check, replace pads, check fluids, change oil snd filter if required…very basic stuff). We would tow the car to the race and RJ would set it up for us. Also do any bigger work we couldn’t do (when time allowed…end of day usually). We race in the Bike sports championship which is run by 750 motor club and a much cheaper way to race a radical. Even with towing car ourselves and cheaper race entry fees (with 750 -about £500) you are looking at a £1500 weekend not including tyres. Some people bought old tyres from bigger teams which also helped keep cost down. New tyres are about £1300 a set…not cheap. Hope that helps

    IMHO, you could have passed the blue car whenever you wanted to! Couple questions: A. It was VERY cloudy. Was the track damp at all? B. Does repeadly hitting the corner curbing hurt suspension? C. Would it be worth it to get a HANS DEVICE? THANKS FROM A WANNA BE!

  • @jamesbarwellracing2096

    @jamesbarwellracing2096

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi John, Yes it had rained just before the race started. Some cars were on wets (me included) some had stayed on slicks. By the time I crashed the track was completely dry which is why I was struggling. The curbs were wet though….so when I ran on it I spun and crashed. Hitting the curbs does shorten the life of some of the suspension components unfortunately, but I can be the quickest way through a corner. Depends on car/track/conditions really. If your racing you have to have a HANS so if you intend to race definitely worth investing in one. Good luck and thanks for commenting.

Até q naquela curva saiu e pegou a grama. Aí já era. Não foi culpa do piloto.
