Rad Power Bikes RadRover 6 Plus Step-Thru Review - $2k
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
The Rad Power Bikes RadRover 6 Plus Step-Thru is an approachable step-thru version of the proven RadRover fat tire electric bike featuring frame, brake, and battery upgrades for its 6th generation. Available in black or white color schemes, the step-thru offers lower standover and minimum saddle height but introduces some frame flex. Wide 4" tires provide stability, traction, and float for navigating soft terrain like gravel, sand, and snow. Shorter stem, 5 removable spacers, mid-rise handlebar, ergonomic grips, and adjustable suspension fork provide comfort fit options. Network of mobile service vans and multiple storefronts in the US, Canada, and Europe make trying, buying, and maintaining this ebike easy. Redesigned wire routing, especially the motor power cable, and a new removable downtube cover improve reliability and repairability. Great attention to detail and safety with puncture resistant reflective tires, motor inhibiting brakes, two display panels with more precise battery level indicators, and a brake activated rear light. New hydraulic disc brakes require less hand effort, offer fit adjustability, and perform more consistently over time. Multiple rack attachment points and a wide range of quality accessories, that are cross compatible with other Rad models, set this ebike apart. Wide 11-34 tooth gearing makes starting and climbing easy; durable chainring guide reduces chain drops and bottom bracket damage while keeping your clothing clean. Custom 750 watt geared hub motor offers 15% more torque than the prior generation. Redesigned motor controller is now internally mounted for durability and improved aesthetic. The bike costs 17% more and weighs 1lb more. Shorter suspension travel than before, but frame geometry is greatly improved, it handles better at speed.

I have just now come across your channel. I am a stickler for thoroughness in reviews and you hit every detail I wanted to know about these bikes. Thank you for making and posting these videos and your website. They are a huge help in my decision to by a bike like this, when I finally make my mind up.
Very thorough review. I don’t own a Rad bike but am impressed with how well they upgrade their bikes from year to year. Nice accessories too.
Another great review, I love my Radrover 5. Thanks from Seattle.

Sweet! Glad to hear you're enjoying it Mike :D
This is a great review, and the camera work is excellent. Thank you!
Thank you very much for the great review. It was my intention to buy the Rad 5 step thru and I loved the white and orange with carmel seat and hand grips. While I am no longer attracted to a rad's white bike, I am delighted to know how the bike has been improved. Guess black is my new favorite color 😏😏😏
Very informative review. Thanks for attention to detail, and covering all the important features. I really like this bike.
Great review as always. Very much appreciated!
I have had my Rad Rover 5 hi-step for a year now and the RR 6 looks like a nice incremental upgrade..... I have test ridden a few other budget / entry-level e-bikes along with a couple of pricey Specialized-brand bikes. I am happy to say that the Rad, while lacking some of the refinement of more expensive bikes, turned out to be a heck of a buy....I treat the bike pretty rough, lots of beach and trail riding, curb jumping and more...replaced the front brake pads and just an occasional wash and chain lube.....best "big dollar" purchase I have made in years. Love to see a future Rad Fat tire with a Mid-drive, tho
I like those orange accents on the inner tube stems.... can't tell you how many times I've spun around my tire looking for the stem on my RRSTfat :) Also nice to see the rear tail light integrated into the back of the fender. The way it's tucked under the optional rack on my RRover is less than perfect. Looks like some good changes. I love my RPB!!
Very nice update:) I would have purchased this over the Aventon Level.
If you are shopping for an e-bike this looks like a good one. They have made many improvements along the way and finally have settled on the half twist throttle instead of a lever which would have been a complete deal breaker for me. The lever just does not work out when riding over bumpy trails. I would suggest that you also look at the Voltbike Yukon 750 Limited. It has many of the same features as this one but it comes with the rear rack, has aluminum, not plastic, fenders and has a 17.5 Ah battery that is integrated.
Wow this a awesome Bike. I’m brand new to this space and looking for a the Best E-Bike purchase experience Living in the Boston area weather can make a big difference.. thanks for this great page
Thanks so much for highlighting Walk Mode at 15:25. I'm definitely going to get one of these bikes, I just need to figure out which style frame to buy.
Thank you for this excellent video. You did an excellent job describing the bike. It was easy to follow you even though I am new at riding bikes. I just started using this bike, and I love it. I only use level 2 of pedal assist. Once in a while I use level 3 when going up hill. I am hesitant to use the throttle because it goes too fast for me. My only concern with this bike is the location of the throttle because some times I accidentally turn it off. The break handle, in my opinion, is too short.
Great review thanks
I have had My RadRover 6plus over step for almost a Year ,and I can only say that it was one of the best investments in the last few years !!! 👍👍👍
I did turn mine up Great E - Bike if you're like me < I don't want to work on anything to ride it
It’s really neat seeing the evolution of these bike designs. Rad has made so many improvements. It seems as though they have watched your videos and have taken many hints from them. I would like to see how that mount for a lock works.

You don’t need any more praise, but appreciate professional technical information.
Glad you don't call it a girl's bike, i just wish other so-called bike experts would follow your lead. It irritates me when they do videos referring to these bikes as girl bikes I use one due to age and health issues and I am not a girl. Kind of offending, actually.

Yeah, as a guy with some knee, back, and neck issues from car and ski accidents over the years, I'm a fan of step-thru. These days, with heavier ebikes and the big racks, it's just nice to be able to handle the bike easily and mount-dismount without having to do some wide leg swing or bike tip to one side. It's great that they are making this model in multiple colors too.

Did you change out the hand grips? The ones on the bike I tested today were a textured rubbery type material, which I like much better than the leather ones that are on the Mini, which appears to be what's on this bike in your video.
Where did you get the insulated fabric bottle holder? It does not exist on the Radpower (Canada) website.
Rad is crazy backordered. No date for my bike ordered a month ago.

Good luck waiting. I gave up after 4 months for my Rad bike.
I bought a RadRover 6 Plus Step-thru based in part on this video and other research, and I am very happy with it. The only thing I don't like is the battery charger, which must be plugged into the battery before plugging it into the wall or you blow an internal battery fuse which you cannot access for replacement. As an electronics engineer I would love to know how they wound up with this charger surge problem for which a design solution should have been trivial. Hopefully they will find an acceptably designed replacement charger. My solution is to tape warnings on both ends of the charger wires to remind me.

Looking at this model and saw your comment. I don't see where anyone addressed it but seems like a very odd design and was wondering if this has been resolved for you? Wonder why none of these reviews mention it? All paid for by Rad maybe?

I do not have this issue. I keep the charger connected to an outlet in the garage where I park the bike. I simply plug it into the battery each time I park.
I just got a RR6+ step through and I really like the bike. it's a blast to ride and so far nothing negative to say about the performance. At first I thought I had a real issue with their cable management in the front, tons of zip ties holding that whole mess together in what seemed like a totally random manner, so I cut the ties loose and tried to make some sense of it, but the issue didn't become clear until I was changing stock handlebars for Jones Bars, once I had it all torn apart it became clear that they either had some piss poor engineering on the project or they simply used a generic wiring harness, or more likely something borrowed from another model, running up to the front of the bike, so nothing really fits the way it's supposed to. I think that that black junction box with the concave side is supposed to be against the bike trapped by the front basket, or bottle holder or something else, (its concave on one side for a reason right?) If you put it there the cables intended to reach all the different devices mounted on the handlebars no longer reach, but now you can see how that specific wire harness was intended to be installed, and it would all work fine if only the cables out of the junction box were the proper lengths... The other issue I had is that they installed the throttle up against the grip, and a short brake lever was inboard of that... so when reaching for the brake you'd have to reach across the throttle to some extent, not the mix you want... When swapping my bars I put the brake against the grip and the throttle inboard of that now it all looks and works much easier and safer... I have other gripes with routing of the rear brake cable line and shifter cable from the wrong side, but I'm done griping... it seems to run great and with the Jones Bars it's a lot more comfortable. but someone really fell down on the QC when it comes to that whole front harness and assembly... I think they owe all of us that bought the bike a proper wiring harness. Happy peddling all! : )

great review you nailed it! i bought the rad6 plus... assuming its pretty much the same bike... still haven't gotten it yet but watching your review am pretty stoked about getting it and your review made me feel i bought a good bike!
Is there a quick disconnect to turn the throttle off? I don’t want a bike that always has a hot throttle . Thanks for your review
I bought a rad rover 6 plus bike and I love it I am 70 years young. I ride with my kids and I had a 10 speed and let me tell you it was very difficult getting up hills for me. But now I can do it. The only problem I am having is the seat hurts my butt. I can't remember where I saw it but someone said there is a gel seat that works great. I did see the one on the RadRover website but that wasn't the one I saw. I thought you mentioned the gel seat. Please advise. Also where did you get the water bottle holder?

Great review! I've always loved the Rover, though I don't understand the updated motor. They said it puts out 68nm of torque, yet the original motor puts out 80nm of torque. So, how can it be considered an improvement for hill climbing?
@ElectricBikeReview
2 жыл бұрын
I think the original torque measurement was a number passed on by the supplier. When they made their own motor, they measured and compared both using a different standard and found the new numbers. I see this as them trying to be transparent and I’m just passing the data along… because I cannot measure it myself.
I am looking into this bike and my only decision is do I get the step through or the high step. I am only 5’8” with a 29 inch inseam. I think the high step is just out of my range. Your thoughts?
Thanks for posting I guess awful lot of talk most people that are fairly naive want to know how far it will go how fast it will go dealer service how much it cost
I'm planning on purchasing one of these bikes. I sat and rode the Rad power 6 but it was not functioning out of the box. My dad puchased one of these bikes in the fall but it never worked. I'm sure it was because my dad and uncle assembled it intoxicated and messed up the wiring. He returned it with no arguement. I wonder how it would perform in -30 C in my city of Edmonton Canada. I really liked the design and feel it would be a good commuter bike for me.
Is this Rad 6+ a better senior bike than there City or other commuter type e bikes? Also ,it’s been 1 year , would like a more current update as of October 2022.
Hi Court, Fantastic review, but I have a question for you. Any chance that you could get your hands on a Cannondale Topstone Neo Carbon 2 to review? It's at the top of my list of E-Bikes to buy and I'm really curious to hear your opinion of it! Have a great weekend!
@ElectricBikeReview
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Jack! I’ll sure try, but it’s probably not going to be a quick thing. There isn’t a Cannondale dealer near my that I know of. What do you like about the bike? Sounds like it’s a good one if it’s top of your list!
I've watched a few of your reviews now and greatly appreciate them. But I have a very specific question as to which bike might be best to buy. I've been watching the e-bike revolution grow for 10 years now, with a view to buying my own one day..... and that day is within the next year. I'm retired, and with a fixed income, so price is important, but reliability, usability, and longevity are even more so. I want one bike for the next 10 + years, and I want to go everywhere with it, including climbing logging roads on mountains, on Vancouver Island. I want to have a battery capacity that would give me at least 50 km (more is better) with pedal assist. I'm looking at everything from Rad, to Dost, to Evelo (love their belt versus chain), to Sondors, Juiced, Aventon, etc. I've pretty well concluded I want 3-4" tires as well. I've even created an excel spread sheet. I've learned a lot, and while no bike appears 'perfect' it looks like mid hub is the way to go. So here is my question: If you were buying just one bike, with a view to wanting it to last 10 years or more, and meet these expectations, which would YOU pick? Is this totally a matter of 'you get what you pay for' or are there outlier companies out there in Canada or the USA making incredible bikes for exceptional price points? If you'd prefer not to answer on this public forum, you can text me a reply to 250-667-7446. Your input would be most appreciated. [By the way what did your parents buy?]

Continue to do your homework but consider a Rad. I am a big guy and needed a bike to match. I purchased a Rad Rover 5. For the price, it has proved to be an excellent value. I ride on the beach, local bike trails and on the road and it has never disappointed. The thing I like the most is the ability to purchase "off-the-shelf" parts for repair and upgrade options....My warranty expires next month and as a tinkerer, I intend on upgrading the display /controller and possibly even adding a more powerful motor.
I’ve been unable to find any shop that has Hollywood racks. All other racks are limited to 60 pounds per bike. Taking the battery off helps a little. What do you recommend?

Yeah, I like the solution that Rad developed here because it's more secure than the press fit plastic covers I've seen from fancier more expensive ebikes, but still looks great. They strike a great balance of affordability, function, and style in my opinion.

I have a question that even Rad couldn't answer. This bike is heavy at 72.5 lbs. When this bike is one bike among 4 bikes, you could have a total combined weight of 150 - 200 lbs. I haven't seen any hitch bike carriers, which can hold 4 bikes, that can clearly claim to support this weight. Most say they can support 40-50 lbs per bike. Most say they can support up to 140-150 total lbs. Are there any recommended bike carriers/trailers out there that can support the massive weight that comes with this bike, especially when you must consider the weight of 3 additional bikes?

can save a ton of water by going pee into a plastic container with a lid, like a laundry soap jug. This will cut down on the number of times the toilet gets flushed. Don't let pee sit in the toilet that will foul up the toilet really bad. Can also save up the water used to wash hands, one way is to use bathroom tub to wash hands and have a 5 gallon bucket under the bathroom faucet while washing your hands. This hand washing water can be used to flush the toilet.

It seems like each company advances a bit with the new model year. I think these are planned years in advance, and the fact that there are some similarities shows that both companies are paying attention and seeing the similar opportunities for enhancement. I like that they are both using custom frames and batteries vs. differentiating using only paint or a couple of components like the old days of ebikes.
To be honest, I am very disappointed in Rad Power Bikes. I had been planning to buy these bikes for a very long time. I also called yesterday, and spoke to your sales rep, who said that you guys won’t even ship parts out here to Hawaii. Do you realize that we are part of the United States too? I understand that there are restrictions on lithium ion batteries, I get that. But you can’t even ship parts here if I did have one? Maybe there needs to be a way to ship the bike, and parts and then send the Lithium iOn batteries via surface separately. I went down to my local bike shop and dropped $12k on 4 Giant E Bikes instead because they actually wanted my business. Rad Power Bikes, pull your head out of the sand and realize that Alaska and Hawaii exist too. Maybe it's time for us to stop doing business with Washington residents too. I am pissed off. Aloha

I respect your opinion, there are some good torque sensors and multi-sensors available now. I sometimes prefer cadence because it doesn't require as much rider leg power, and I have an injured knee. It would be cool if you could turn off torque and also have cadence :)
