Rad Power Bikes RadRover 6 Plus Review - $2k

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Rad Power Bikes RadRover 6 Plus is a proven fat tire electric bike with frame, brake, and battery upgrades for its 6th generation. The high-step version is slightly larger and stiffer than the step-thru, but only comes in a black color scheme. Wide 4" tires provide stability, traction, and float for navigating soft terrain like gravel, sand, and snow. Shorter stem, mid-rise handlebar, ergonomic grips, and adjustable suspension fork delivery comfort. Network of mobile service vans and multiple storefronts in the US, Canada, and Europe make trying, buying, and maintaining the ebike easy. Redesigned wire routing, especially the motor power cable, and a new removable downtube cover improve reliability and repairability. Great attention to detail and safety with puncture resistant reflective tires, motor inhibiting brakes, two display panels with more precise battery level indicators, and a brake activated rear light. New hydraulic disc brakes require less hand effort, offer fit adjustability, and perform more consistently over time. Multiple rack attachment points and a wide range of quality accessories, that are cross compatible with other Rad models, set this ebike apart. Wide 11-34 tooth gearing makes starting and climbing easy; durable chainring guide reduces chain drops and bottom bracket damage while keeping your clothing clean. Custom 750 watt geared hub motor offers 15% more torque than prior generation. Redesigned motor controller is now internally mounted for durability and improved aesthetic. The bike costs 17% more and weighs 4.8lbs more. Shorter suspension travel than before, but frame geometry is improved.

    I love my 2017 RadRover as my easy exercising and exploring option that hits my kid button at age 70. One improvement I would suggest for Rad eBikes. I think the addition of a good rear view mirror as standard equipment would be a huge plus; that would be showing an additional leadership move for the eBike industry. I have been riding motorcycles since I was 15 1/2 years old, and absolutely believe rear view mirrors can save lives. ... My Two Cents :+)

    I'm proud to say I have the 6+ and am amazed how nice it is to be able to ride this bike as a regular 7 speed geared bike. 1 gear is like peddling a cloud, light and powerful without motor. 2nd gear is a little more work from a stop but once ya get out of the hole it's a great gear for a dead battery scenario. You didn't review the headlight at night for the light beam. The directional lens is a flat horizontal illumination that is the main focus. At 20' ahead it spans 12' across, nice by 3' deep so it's not bad, not like a car or motorcycle but at 20mph or less very good. I wish the break light was a little brighter, but super excited it's an actual break light. For the 2K price point I wish the seat post had shock absorption. The walk mode is great, I'm 6' 3" and at 3 mph is easy to keep up to it until I get tired then that speed is a little fast . Anyways, your review is the best I've seen of this new bike and will help those who watch inform people what's out there.

    Yeah, I was told that the battery was redesigned to improve weight distribution and they made it tougher... but cross compatibility is lost. It offers the same capacity, which has always been above average, but now it's longer. The amazing thing to me is that it's actually lighter than before?! I suspect we will see more Rad Power Bikes that use this format in the future. Thanks for your comment Charles, hope you're having a good day :)

    Yeah agreed. But I guess the industry gotta roll with the times.. It's all about desirable compact designs. Me personally? I got no riding issue with the standard bulky battery, It's easy to swap easy to get repaired easy/cheaper to replace. And no matter how they try to hide it's an ebike, It still blatantly is lol And the more desirable the more stealable :)

    I keep hoping Rad will add some rain protection items to put over the most vulnerable electric elements. Baggies with rubber bands work ok, but specific 'shower caps' for especially cockpit area would be really helpful. Seems like a no-brainer to provide them.

    Its not a Rad new Design, the Chinese have moved on from the older designs to integrated battery , Rad would eventually need to move to a different supplier to keep them the same as the old versions and quality could suffer as a result.

    Hey Jeff! Sorry to hear about the little issues your bike has been having. I rarely do the long term videos because almost all of my time is spent traveling to cover new stuff, and I usually don’t get bikes pre-launch to do reliability tests with… it’s a balance of launch date coverage vs. reliability. however! I created the EBR forums specifically to help people share long term feedback, and I also answer all comments on the written reviews over time. Thing is while watching the step-through version he mentioned that the motor is proprietary. To me that means you can't really upgrade to a true 750 watt motor if this isn't one. The previous motors were 500 watt even though they may have said 750. At least not without a lot of extra work. And I also don't like the idea that you can't get into the menu to adjust your top speed settings. On my 2018 you could do that.

    I think they've been spending to grow physical outlets and the mobile service vans... plus, supply chain costs (shipping containers) and parts shortages have made things tricky for everyone. The increased price probably reflects some of that, but also the hydraulic brakes, display, and frame redesign with custom battery and motor.

    Oooh, this looks like Rad stepping up their game to contend with some of the challengers like the Aventure. I kind of agree, the lack of cross compatibility and longer length (making it harder to stow a second pack) are big trade-offs. Thanks for this awesome review! Question for ya: For multiple reasons, I want to switch from commuting to work in a car to a bike. My bike route is 14 miles one way (first 3 miles are on-road and downhill and then 11 miles are on a relatively flat bike path). I'm 250 lbs and not in great shape, and hardly ever ride my bike. I did a kind of trial run yesterday - I waited till the time of day when I'd be commuting home from work (it was 95 degrees out) and I rode the first 5 miles and turned around and rode back home. I was huffing and puffing pretty good... but I did it and with my old single speed. I realized I want some kind of electric-assist for that 3 mile stretch that would be uphill on my way home after work and it's hot out. Sorry, long comment... my question is, what's the best rad bike for me? I really like the radrover 6 plus (and also cause it's on sale right now) but am wondering if commuting on mostly pavement is a good idea for fat-tire bike and with my weight. Any help appreciated, thanks!!!

  • @Kattbirb

    Really neat additions! I'm a bit dismayed that Radpower are still using that 7-speed gearset. I most often ride in level 0 to 2 on the power assist, so the 34 tooth gear is great for a granny gear but the next size gear is such a jump in size it's sometimes jarring. I'd be content with an 8-speed. Granted, if this is the worst thing about my Rad City 4 we're in good shape. If I might wishlist a little, in addition to an 8-speed, I'd be ecstatic if some premium electronics could be integrated; High/low settings on the headlight, turn signals and a horn. I ride through traffic very often and do ride at night many times a month. I would gladly pay for an integrated option of these for a Rad City 5.

We are considering buying either the 2021 Rad Rover 6 or the 2021 Aventon Adventure. We are leaning towards the Aventon 2021 model because the design is cleaner. Which do you recommend for first-time bike buyers? This brings me to the second question. We want to buy the bikes in the next week or two but don’t want to purchase the 2021 models and then find the newer 2022 is released soon after. Do you know when the following models will be released of either ebike? And if yes, what newer features will be added? Is there a link with the info you could share?

    Ride1up’s LMT’d weighs in at around 51lbs, but it doesn’t come with fenders or lights. It is still heavy, but more manageable than 70-ish lbs. It also uses a torque sensor instead of a cadence sensor, so you need to exert some effort, though on max assist, it doesn’t take much. 😁

    That's great that Rad power came out with a new bike. can you tell me. Its a true 750 W motor or a 500 peaking at 750w That's great that it can climb hills and you added more torque. What's the peak power of the motor. I think if people are going to spend that kind of money on an E bike They should get a true 750W motor peaking at 1000 or 1100 w (Just saying)

  • @ElectricBikeReview

    @ElectricBikeReview

    3 жыл бұрын

    Good question, I specifically asked this exact question and was told that they are only providing the nominal rating of 750w. Someone mentioned 1,000+ but it was unofficial. They also told me torque rating, which is less than what was provided for the RadRover 5, but was told that they actually measured it themselves this time and found it to be 15% more. So based on the numbers, RadRover 5 would be 59nm torque and the 6 Plus was quoted at 68nm.

    Your website comparison between RR5 and RR6 shows RR6 have 68 NM which is less than the 80 NM of the RR5. How is that RR6 have a stronger torque compared to the RR5?

  • @ElectricBikeReview

    @ElectricBikeReview

    3 жыл бұрын

    Great question... I think the RR6 is rated accurately, and the old ratings were simply passed on from Bafang. I don't gather that number manually, because it's too difficult and subjective. You can probably disregard hub motor torque ratings on EBR, but I do trust Bosch and some of the other big brands... but again, difficult to compare between companies because they measure differently. I think the new torque rating is Rad's good faith effort to actually measure for themselves this time (since they built the motor). And, they said it's 15% more powerful than before. So, I suspect the Bafang was more like 59NM in reality vs. the 80NM I was told by Rad, which got that info from Bafang.
