I want to personally thank you for making this video. Before watching it, I was confused about the whole battery thing. I had read plenty about them, but I still couldn't make heads or tails. But through your easy and simple explanation, the fog has disappeared and I finally know exactly what I'm looking for.

Thanks for this video, this was one of the best short videos for potential ebike purchasers to guide them to buy a bike that works for them. I purchased an ebike for my wife 5 years ago, and purchased the wrong bike for her so this video will be very helpful for those that are contemplating a purchase. Even though we are looking for the right bike for my wife she has still enjoyed her bike tremendously. Ebikes are fantastic for people that are not interesting in training all winter so they can enjoy long ride during the biking season.

this video helped me understand a lot. THANK YOU. Quick story. I was riding with my husband yesterday in a very mountainous, beautiful area in Pennsylvania. I became so sad to the point of tears. My husband was taking on the hills with so much ease, and I had to keep getting off my bike, and so I felt like I was holding him back. I told him I wanted to purchase a pedal assist bike to avoid constantly getting off the bike, and having an ABSOLUTELY MISERABLE bike ride. I'm going to write down EVERY SINGLE suggestion. Great video guys, a lot of great information here. One thing worth noting is the importance of researching an Ebike that will match your height. The multiple frame, wheel, and tire sizes should be a determining factor on which bike you should get, especially if that model is not available in different frame sizes. Seat post adjustment is one thing that helps, but that doesn’t remedy the situation completely since E bikes are using larger wheels and the popular fat tires. Love your videos, have fun out there!

Great information without a bias toward any particular bike. I've been Jonesing for an e-bike (I have a teardrop trailer and belong to a couple of camping groups) for more than a year, and I keep learning more and more about what to look for. You confirmed what I had decided about wattage. I live in Colorado, and had decided I really need to have 500 or more watts. I also knew early on to get the lightest bike I can get that still has the features I want. My limitation is money, so I'll have to find a compromise that I can live with! Thank you for posting this great video!

Hi John! Fulltime life is not for everyone but it IS the right life for me. Ask yourself how much alone time you need or want, how comfortable are you with uncertainty, how good are you at fixing things? Does life on the road call you? Is it something you think about often? If there is a way you could test out this lifestyle first, then I would recommend that. Or start small and cheap. I started with a camper van. After five months I couldn't take the small space but I knew I loved the RV life so I upsized. There are many many ways to do this life including less travel or even wintering in one place.

I see many bike racks installed on vehicles that block the rear brake lights. For added safety; Remember when you are using a bike rack on the rear of your vehicle you don't block off your brake lights. When I installed my 2" trailer receiver hitch,I wired the receiver at the same time with a four prong receiver just incase I wanted to pull a small trailer. Any small or large trailers require. Most automotive shops sell LED light kits you can install on your rack.I purchased mine from Princess auto for $30. Simply plug the lights directly into your trailer 4 prong plug for added safety. Thanks and have a safer day.

As a noob considering my first E bike I found this very informative. I've also been a serious road cyclist and I originally questioned the validity of Ebikes. Yet there were times--many times--I found myself thinking, "I wish this thing had a motor"! So what it comes down to for me is that Bikes seem like a lot more fun than a regular pedal bike. And more fun is what I want to have these days (I'm 71 and super fit). Thanks for a helpful push in that direction!

Love my Ebike. We bought the right ones the first time fortunately. We have the electric Veego folding Fat Tire bikes from Ridescoozy - 500w 13ah is plenty of power for us. Paid only about $1500 ea. Has pedal assist on and off so we can just pedal if we want to. We have the twist throttle and have had no problems and no issues regarding the bike taking off if touched. Probably a general warning given on the video on the off chance it could happen, but I find I would really have to twist that throttle on purpose for any movement but then again I don't turn my assist on until I'm seated on the bike. Maybe mine has some safety feature I'm not aware of. Anyway, I love everything about our bikes. We've used them everywhere, love the welded racks on the frames and the fun colors. Came fully assembled and Jason and Ronda gave excellent customer service. Jason tests out all the bikes before the white glove delivery. All we had to do was to put on the pedals. It's been 100% fun for us with zero problems. That was 9 months ago. Great so far!

Hi Sue! That's an awesome review! And what a great deal you got. I started shopping in October and I noticed prices inching upward. And glad to hear that you've had no problem with the twist throttle. I think they must have a safety feature or a better designed throttle. I test rode a $4000 Pedago with the twist throttle. Besides being so heavy that I couldn't keep it upright, that twist throttle seemed out to get me. And then I broke my hand during the test ride! Could NOT wait to get that thing back to the bike shop! Happy riding! I hope you've been able to get outside and enjoy that during all this time. Honestly, my bike has been my lifeline during these times. Stay safe!

This was so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make this video! My only suggestion is to mention what your idea of a hill is. I live in the Midwest and I think what I'd call a hill is what others would call an incline, so it makes it tough for me to know how well a bike will work in my neighborhood.

Yes, that's a good point, thank you. Since I'm from Kentucky I totally get it. That's I mentioned the "Rice-a-Roni hill" that the 250W motor ebike could not climb. I'm sure it would be fine for most hills in the Midwest, but NOT those steep ones near lakes and rivers. Thanks again for your comment. I put a front wheel kit on my old beach cruiser, it's been great. The most expensive part was that battery. I do have a twist throttle and it's been fine for me.

That battery thing is tricky and needs some study. Can be dangerous but is do able. I would suggest doing some math first. It might be better to just buy an e-bike. Thanks for this information. Very informative. You two seem to have great chemistry along with the smiles. Please keep the information coming. I like the shirts. Not too sure about the show, however, I did like Liz’s laugh cracking up during the show.

I own a Trek Verve e-bike (love it!) and two major consideration before purchasing are repairs and warranty. When your motor, display or battery need repairing or replaced where are you going to take it? What’s covered under the warranty? The batteries alone can cost up to $500. Trek has an excellent warranty and ubiquitous stores. Buying an e-bikes on-line from a company with no physical store was a sticking point for me. And I can almost guarantee many of these companies won’t be around a few years from now. Ask before you buy.

Those are excellent points! If you are going to buy an ebike online, we recommend calling your local bike shop to see if they will service it. It's true that it is much better to test ride a bike in person versus buying online. However, the savings online can be pretty tempting! Enjoy your Verve!

Very good check list for potential e bike buyers. I have a twist throttle that has an on- off switch for safety which I find better than a thumb throttle . Nice to see a guy/ gal duo discussing e bikes! Thanks for this helpful video!

E-bikes are great! I used mine to travel to work for 5 years where each day was a 25 miles round trip. Over the 5 years I travelled the equivalent of around the world! It kept me fitter and saved a ton of money in petrol and car costs. My e-bike had a twist throttle, as well as pedal assist, which was great for quick getaways from junctions and traffic lights, etc, I never had a problem with twisting it by accident. My e-bike was a relatively cheap generic chinese bike with a rear wheel hub motor. The quality was not up to german standards but then maintenance and parts were cheaper! I love your yellow/orange smiley shirt by the way! Thanks for posting.

I hear what your saying, I'm on my second year with a ebike, before I was paying $40 aweek for fuel, and $40 for parking, my power bill did go up $120 a quarter, but all in all I'm saving $70 aweek and I fitter,

1st time I've seen your channel! Going to retire from teaching this year after 40 years. Got my 2 daughters in college (& paid for)!! I will be buying an electric assist soon, looking at the Tern G10 cargo that has 2 batteries, to zipp around towns on. Thanks for info on watts & amps! Having a Ford Transit Tall built out & will move into it full time to travel like you 2 are. Bike will be stored in garage by opening back doors, then below bed. Looking forward to virtual bike tours!!

You guys are awesome! I am just starting the research for an ebike, and I have been making notes! Love the point about the visible shirt! I have an old construction orange and yellow reflector vest that I wear when I am out on the road, and a race jersey that is a bright highlighter green, from one of the 5k runs I did years ago. Living in the country, you have to make sure that you are seen.

What about a recumbent trike three wheels ? Easier on the back and bottom

Interesting to hear your perspective on throttles and pedal assist. We bought the Aventon Pace 500s which have padal assist and a primitive throttle (you have to be pedaling to engage it, but can then stop pedaling.) We have found that in mild terrain, the pedal assist gives us pretty much NO exercise, so more often than not, we've started turning of pedal assist altogether, pedaling as normal, and then just hitting the throttle (turbo!) when we hit a grade.

Thanks, Very informative and entertaining even to an 80 year old that's on his 3rd e-bike. My wife and I got rid of one car and I now use my e-bike to do all sorts of local shopping as well as ride every Sunday 30 mile round trip with friends with whom I'e been riding with for 40 years, I'm the only one in a group of 7 or so with an e-bike, oldest rider is 85. One point of contention with your assessment of 250 watt motor is, that for me, whose, terrain is mostly flat, with some hills thrown in, a 250 watt front hub kit with a 36V, 9 amph battery is more than adequate to give me all the assistance and mileage i need. I converted a Specialized Sirrus carbon fiber hybrid bike with a Swytch kit and I love it, most of the time I'm in level 1 or 2 assistance mode and can outpace my friends, all in great shape, all riding hi-tech bikes. I chose a 250 watt kit after doing a lot of research and found it to be cost effective and light. Thanks again for a great video but don't knock a 250 watt motor.

Hi Peter. You are right! If you don't need assist up hills (or don't have hills near you) then a 250W is just fine. In fact, 250W is all that's legal in Europe. All it means is you'll be doing more of the work going uphill. Glad to hear you are enjoying your ebike. Thanks. Simply put. Good information. Definitely helped narrow down what want. Allow me to add I want suspension forks as a must have for my e-bike. It will be used for a grocery-getter, errands, etc., around town. Many roads surfaces where I live full of potholes and poor pavement. Suppose if someone plans off-roading this a factor too.

After my experience with ebikes, the first question I would ask is how expensive is a replacement battery. I bought an inexpensive ebike from Walmart about 10 years ago and was very happy. The bike did everything I wanted and was a joy to ride. It cost somewhere around 800-900 dollars. However after about 100-200 miles of use the battery kept dying sooner and sooner until it wouldn't last one ride. I rode it 10 miles a day, 2 days a week to work and back and charged it after each use. It turned out that when I bought the bike I should have drained the battery down all the way and recharged it a few times so the battery wouldn't develop a memory. This was not in the instructions in the owner's manual; it was a reply to a customer question and I didn't see it until the problem had already occurred. When it happened I thought no big deal, just buy a new battery. Then I found out the battery cost $500.00. That's more than half the cost of the bike! That was a little too much for me. So buyers beware.
