Rachel Nichols’ Apology to Maria Taylor Draws More Backlash at ESPN

Due to the fallout from the New York Times article, Rachel Nichols gave an opening soliloquy yesterday on her show, “The Jump.” She apologized to Maria Taylor and her ESPN colleagues for comments she made in a leaked conversation. The comments occurred before last year’s NBA Finals and were about Taylor hosting the Finals due to ESPN trying to improve their record on diversity.
“Start Your Day” hosts Sharon Reed and Mike Hill criticize the selective accountability at ESPN and say the network should apologize to Taylor and to digital video producer Kayla Johnson, who was suspended for two weeks for leaking the recording.

Get the story straight. SHE left her mic on, and the recording, like all others, go to ESPNs server. Someone at ESPN accidentally found the recording, and passed it around via internal email. THEN it got leaked to press, later on. That being said, the apology is weak.

For someone to find that recording and spread it around to the press… that tells you she isn’t liked by some working behind the cameras. Rachel Nichols strikes me as the kind of person who will force her way into decision making room and lock the door behind her so no one else can follow.

Only maybe a handful of their on-air personalities have something of a job security, so everyone is digging their heels in and protecting their income. It is not Rachel's job to care one bit about Black people, her job is to care about contributing to the forward momentum of her household and childrearing. For television, you don't want any of your clothing to be a distraction, and the tie is distracting, because of the pattern and the white. For non television, it's appropriate for winterwear. He is a grown man, and he is a television professional, it's not other people's job to educate him about camera wear; that is the difference between a man who needs to know, and a man who is just fine with getting his foot in the door. And if you curbed your feelings, you would see I mentioned the tie is incorrect, I did not say the rest of the outfit was the problem. And with you being a woman, who is not required to wear men's suits, all you know is it looks nice to you, but as a woman, it's not your job to know when, why, and how to wear the appropriate suit, or suit combination. Stick to what you should have knowledge about: how to properly wear makeup, the wear of your hair, how to look sexy and give a good look for your man, and know which lotion brand keeps your knees, elbow, ankle, and heels looking up to par. 100% sexist closing statement, but nowhere was I incorrect.

Thank goodness for BNC. I wanted to be a journalist long ago but I wouldn't be able to endure the foolishness. The part about " some journalist willing themselves," to their position. So true. Rachel knew and ESPN is going to protect this " FRAGILE WHITE WOMAN." What Kayla Johnson went through is what many of us go through at work and it's the VERY reason why so many people are opting for working from home because WHY go back to work? I quit my job this past pandemic year because of unchecked white tears and privelge and microagression.

Every Woman at ESPN is threatened by Maria Taylor because she is good . If she wasn’t black, all the women at that network would be talking about her anyway because everyone can see her come up. Maria Taylor does tick off two boxes for the company in terms of race and her sex. This is about the good old boys at the ESPN network , that thinks they are exempt from any change in their practices because they are liberal virtue signalers. This helps Maria Taylor get more money because there is no way that ESPN can let her walk now. Maria Taylor’s price has gone up and they are going to have to pay her as a result. This will all work out for the best.

It was a private conversation smh I may disagree with her but I love all these guys who want to play judge, jury, and executioner. We all say things in private that we wouldn't say publicly, and that's what happened here, period!! Demonizing her for a private conversation about how she felt, when she was in her feelings is wrong.

The minute that she brought up diversity it became a racial thing. She implied affirmative action was the only reason Maria got the job. When we see Maria covering the NBA, NFL, College basketball, l and college volleyball. Rachel's contract didn't say that she would be the ONLY host to ever host the finals. Also, Rachel can go to hell pandering to the athletes for interviews by posting about causes that she doesn't necessarily believe in.

Rachel Nichols felt privileged enough to call out the NBA for not paying tribute to Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She insinuated some kind of sexism while ignoring RBG hated black athletes protesting during the anthem. She was not an ally. Rachel Nichols is the worst example of a white feminist.

I understand both sides, because Rachel feels like she's earned her spot over the years, but what she's failing to understand is that some people may feel that her privilege has awarded her the job by default, and she makes a statement like what she made,I can understand how it may rub some people the wrong way, cause it almost came off as is she where saying Maria only has her job because she's black and not cause she's qualified,I don't know if she meant it that way,but what I do know is that, one can't cry because they feel like someone is being afforded the advantages that she has received her whole career

The problem with Rachel Nichols' apology is that she left an enormous gaping hole in it. It was a half apology. She said the half where you say the words "I'm sorry." But she left out the half that begins with "because..." Also why did she include "to those I hurt" when the controversy is between her and Maria Taylor? 2 people. Woman to woman. But now you gonna apologize to the whole world and simply include Maria as just one of many?
