    Thank you so much for taking the time to explain and help us learn! My dog has been developing seasonal allergies over the last recent years, but I'd notice sometimes they'd come back up a little too quick after healing. I figured maybe it has to do with certain ingredients now that he's older. Upon further reading, I've come across info about grain-free diets are best for dogs with skin sensitivities. I thought it probably wasn't so much the environmental factors, but could definitely be having to do with what I was feeding him. I was actually stuck between both of these foods when trying to see which one to switch him to and I did get him started on Simply Nourish because they have the grain-free option, thinking that grain-free was best for dogs with skin sensitivities. If I wouldn't have come across your video, I wouldn't have known that grain-free isn't in the best interest of their overall health. Your video has made me eager to continue learning and has given me the confidence to feed him the other options provided by both companies if budgeting becomes an issue. Thank you!

    Hi Dr. Rea! I’ve found your videos really helpful! Can you please review Hills Science Large Breed Puppy Chicken Meal and Oats? I’m feeding it to my Shiloh Shepherd and because of your videos, I checked out the AAFCO statement and I found it interesting. It says it’s complete and balanced nutrition for “growing puppies”. But, no mention of large breed puppies, just “growing puppies”. I found that interesting, and concerning.

    I've been watching your videos over the weekend, and I have to say that I highly respect what you offer us. You're not trying to convince us to do anything nor are you trying to change our minds; you're simply stating the facts and allowing us to make our own decisions. I salute you for this. As a cat owner, I wonder if you could cover the following topics: -Is it true that fresh ingredients eg: chicken or turkey are more digestible and bioavailable to cats than are meat meals such as chicken meal or turkey meal? (It seems that pet food companies want us to believe so). -Are peas and potatoes better than grains in cat food? -Do cats highly benefit from pea protein and potato protein in cat food? (Asking this because much like corn, pea protein and potato protein are vilified by many pet owners). -Carbohydrate metabolism in cats: how much carbohydrates can cats metabolize in cat food especially since they are deemed as obligate carnivores? (people say the max amount should be 10-12% on a dry matter basis, others say cats can digest up to 35% on a dry matter basis) -DM in cats: Is the surging incidence of DM in cats due to carbohydrates in diets or due to owners' excessively feeding their sedentary cats? -Does feeding cats an exclusive dry food diet pose a risk to develop crystals, urinary stones, and blockages? Thank you for making educational and unbiased videos.

    For the first question here's a study on protein digestibility in cats. I believe a lot of cat foods have moved away from meat meal ( beef and pork) in favor of chicken meal due to a disease outbreak? " However, since the occurrence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Japan, the use of MM or meat and bone meal (MBM) as a pet food ingredient has been prohibited. Therefore, some other ingredients, which are safe and are nutritionally equivalent to MM or MBM, are required." But a lot of dog foods have beef meal in them so idk. While studies have shown that cats are able to digest carbs for fiber in commercial foods with no problem, I find that the ideal carb to protein ratio for maintaining healthy adult cats is a weird and indecisive subject. ://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1250243/

    @@AnimalDocRea Hello Dr! Thank your for your reply. My comment was posted a year ago, and I've learned much more since then! I will go over my new thoughts: -Fresh ingredients: It seems that this is mostly being used as a marketing tactic by many companies, but some reputable companies do have research behind using fresh meat, Purina has done some research on this and they concluded that a certain amount of fresh chicken can be beneficial. -Peas and Potatoes: I don't think peas and potatoes are inherently bad, but it seems that they are implicated in nDCM and so are called "suspect ingredients". There are so many current ongoing studies regarding nDCM to delineate the biochemical pathways that could lead to it and how they are possibly affected by potential antinutrients in these suspect ingredients. Perhaps it has to do with taurine absorption and/or uptake by heart cells? Regarding pea protein and potato protein as opposed to whole peas and potatoes: I'm not sure if the isolated protein part would be safer. My conclusion is to stick to grain inclusive diets since grains have been studied and researched for decades and we know that they are safe and highly digestible by cats. -Carbohydrates and DM: I read the relevant sections and Small Animal Clinical Nutrition which states that carbs in pet food are highly digestible by both dogs and cats. Obesity is the main risk factor for DM, not carbs. Gaining weight is due to increased caloric intake vs decreased energy expenditure. It has nothing to do with carbs which yield same amount of energy as protein anyway. Low carb is only helpful after the diagnosis of DM. -Dry food and crystals: I think a dry food diet manufactured by a science based company is not the cause of crystals, especially since a wet food diet does not guarantee that crystals won't form. Some cats have an increased predisposition for developing crystals anyway. Cats can compensate lack of moisture in dry food by drinking. After all, water homeostasis evolved early on in the animal kingdom. I also looked at the WSAVA guidelines in selecting pet food, and I think these guidelines should be the cornerstone for every pet owner to help them choose a proper pet food company since we are always being bombarded with information and misinformation on the internet.

    I have a question about the ingredient list. My vet recommended that if I decide to switch brands of grain-inclusive dog food, to make sure that peas or other legumes are not listed as the first ten ingredients. I noticed that peas are listed at the beginning. What is your opinion on this? I currently feed my two wheaten terriers Purina Pro Plan Complete Essentials-chicken and rice for the younger one and beef for the older one (flavor preferences for each dog). The younger one can be a bit picky, and I did try Rachael Ray’s Nutrish when we were traveling and she didn’t want to to eat the food I brought. She liked it at first, but decided she didn’t like it after three feedings and wouldn’t eat it. She started on Instinct as a puppy (chicken) refused to eat it shortly after we brought her home, moved her to Purina Pro Plan puppy chicken-loved it until she got sick of it, moved her to lamb and rice flavor, and now she’s on Complete Essentials chicken and rice. She likes it for now. I’m just trying to think ahead regarding order of ingredients in case she decides she doesn’t like this food after a while. Thank you!

  • @AnimalDocRea

    @AnimalDocRea

    Check out the community tag on the current research regarding the legumes and DCM. I’m not a fan of using the ingredient list to determine the quality or quantity of anything in a diet because it’s listed by weight prior to processing. It’s easy to say just look at the first 10 and that’s the majority of the diet but that’s not necessary true. It’s also not the legumes per se, it’s more complex than that. So, as long as you pick a grain inclusive diet, you should be fine regardless of the ingredient list. The ingredient list is just so manipulated by marketing it’s pretty useless to consumers. As fast as picky eating, may be worth a work up with your vet. It’s not normal for a dog to get tired of their food. Lots of things in the differential diagnosis for that so may be worth digging into if that problem persists.

    I was feeding Pure Balance Grain Free to our three dogs and I guarantee you I never saw their poop anywhere in the back yard. We would walk out there and never see or step on anything. I assumed it would just quickly dissolve because they had to be pooping right and when we would take them on a walk once a week they would poop but just the backyard seemed to stay clean. We only have one dog now and after learning that grain free isn't good for dogs I switched to Purina dog chow and now I'm seeing the hard dog poop in the yard. Have you ever heard anything like this? I've looked online and even people who feed homemade dog food still say they have some to clean up. At first I thought maybe grains don't break down as quick or it could be the calcium from the meat and bone meal. Could you shed any insight? Thanks!

    Is have to see the garubteed analysis for both, likely a fiber thing. There is no rule in dogs for how often or how much they should defecate, as long as there isn’t straining, there are also a wide range of stool consistency that are considered normal. We actually have a poop grading scale so I’d say it probably just natural variation.

    The "binge" continues! I was a fan of "30 Minute Meals." When I started feeding a stray cat in my yard, I used Rachael Ray Chicken and Brown Rice Recipe. When the cat showed up at my back door with four kittens last year, I mixed in some wet food as well. I found out that two of the wet food flavors contain carrageenan. The dry food contains corn gluten meal. I no longer feed this to my cats. For the money, it is a step above most of the mass market brands. Rachael Ray Nutrish is now owned by Post, the cereal company. Most pet food companies that sell in big box stores are owned by large corporations that make junk food for humans. Just something to consider.
