AnimalDocRea

Welcome to my channel. My name is Dr. Rea and I am a small animal general practitioner. I started this page because everyday people tell me how much they always wanted to be a veterinarian growing up. This channel allows me to share some of the interesting things I come across in my daily practice as well as answer some of your most common questions. I love the science of veterinary medicine and the unpredictable nature of our cases. Please know that this page is meant for education and entertainment, and is not intended to diagnose or treat your pets. Go see your family vet for that!

    Could you also review The Essentials- it's from the UK, started when it was a part of the EU. It's cooked at a lower temp than Farmina, and includes wild caught and free range meat.

    Just started Simply Nourish Pet Food. Our prior food price jumped up another 10.00. And it broke my bank. I started looking at Simply Nourish as the cost vs quality is good. Dog Food Advisor rates it 4.5-5 stars! I have 4 dogs and three cats. Our local Petsmart highly recommends it.

    good video, this is unrelated taking your puppy to the vet for first shot, is it a good idea to keep the dog off the floor in the waiting room, I've always wondered about that .

  • @AnimalDocRea
    @AnimalDocRea3 күн бұрын

    I would if you can, but don’t stress. At my clinic we take extreme caution to use the Lobby as a lobby, not a waiting room so animals don’t spend anytime in the lobby decreasing risk of any infectious diseases spreading. We also time appointments to avoid interactions and are by appointment only to keep risk to a minimum. Not to mention the intense infection control. I cannot speak for all offices, but I’d say most medicine based clinics would be the same.

    Thank you so much for this video. My dog was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy just under a year ago. His seizures are very mild, his hind legs collapse and his body mildly shakes, he basically just zones out, and he gets them very infrequently. He’s a very anxious dog and his seizures happen when he wakes up from sleeping. So far our vet has decided not to medicate. It is very distressing to watch him go through this. I do keep my hands away from his mouth but he wants me to sit on the floor and hold him until it’s over. I was so excited to try this food but he’s allergic to chicken so it’s a no go. Thanks for all the information and your commitment to helping ❤

    Hi Dr. Rea! First off I wanted to thank you for your videos, they have really helped me in my journey of educating myself about dog foods. My question is regarding calcium levels, what exactly is more important, the % shown on the dry matter basis or the g/1000kcal (DM). I have found foods that show 1.4%+ but the actual g/1000kcal is similar to or slightly lower than the top vet recommended foods. I've specifically been on the hunt for a large breed puppy food. Thank you!!

  • @AnimalDocRea
    @AnimalDocRea4 күн бұрын

    Thanks for the kind words. Because I base my analysis on the values suggested in Small animal clinical nutrition, I prefer dry matter. There is an entire chapter on that topic in the linked text, but the standard are only posted dry matter so because that is how the research is done , I feel most confident with that method, others would disagree and say the kcal version is more accurate, and although I agree with the accuracy, the feasibility of obtaining the numbers in that fashion, and then finding correlating standards makes it less useful practically in my opinion.

    Hi Doc, Hey. After a month or so studying foods amd nutrition. I think I've narrowed it down to purina pro plan puppy and a farmina ND ancient grain. This is a for a brand new puppy we will be bringing home soon. A male Pudelpointer. The only thing tripping me up before purchasing either, is I don't know whether my puppy lands in small/regular or large breed puppy. The average weight is in a borderline range. 45-70lbs. Others say 46-67. Do you have any thought on which I should go with? The purina pro plan puppy versus large breed puppy varies so much as well as the guidelines you use for both sizes. Thanks for any help you can provide

    I recently started feeding my seven-year-old Doberman and three year-old Doberman, gentle giant dog food. I did it because I love my family members and I want them to live along healthy life. I took them off pedigree and all of their expensive, supposedly healthy treats. My seven year old Doberman runs around like a puppy. When he gets up and sits down, there’s no sighs or groans whatsoever. In my opinion, I don’t even see how you could call this review. You were negative from the get-go and you did not even call the manufacturer to get information that you could’ve used to give a fair and unbiased view. I found your review to be quite condescending at times.

  • @AnimalDocRea
    @AnimalDocRea8 күн бұрын

    It’s not a review, it’s a lesson on how to pull out marketing from nutrition. What is right for you pet is dependent on your pets labs, and your personal relationship with your veterinarian. For a senior, it would likely be appropriate to compare against the senior guidelines from SACN as described in the linked text. I’m sorry you found it condescending. I have no emotional attachment to any food, and I actually encourage pet owners to do the same. That emotional attachment is often what allows marketing to cloud judgement.

I did the allergy testing and allergy shots and the third vile of his serum broke him out so bad he was put on antibiotics . He also has apoquel and ketoconazole. None of the allergy testing or shots worked. I did find out his food allergies, but environmental allergies seem to difficult. I dont want him on apoquel either. I am out of ideas. This is only food i can find without grains and flaxseed.
