    Great video as always. Truly enjoy the breakdown and explanation as you present it. There are so many foods out in the market and it’s difficult to find that perfect food to feed to our loved pets. It’s overwhelming at times. Can you suggest a brand or brands that would be good for a Doberman pincher female adult? Currently she is 8 weeks old and the breeder is feeding her purina proplan 30/20 all stages which I plan on changing her food once she arrives. So I have been researching puppy foods and adult foods for her. I also plan on incorporating fresh vegetables and eggs along with her kibble. Thank you again. Love the videos!

The calcium is 1.09% but his previous food it was 2.00% so even though the Science Diet is a little higher than optimal I figured it was a better choice. Speaking of "therapeutic", will you ever do a review on the "big 3's" therapeutic dog food? She's currently on purina one large breed puppy because that's what the breeder was currently feeding her. I would like to switch to a Kirkland puppy blend. I have a few questions What benefit or impact would it be if I kept her on this food for a large breed because so far she loves it. If I were to switch your food, how gradual of a change would you recommend?

My real question I need to add more moisture for her as she tends to get constipated. I’ve been mixing in canned food which I am sure is adding lots of calories. What are some good low calorie ways to add more moisture? Thank you

  • @AnimalDocRea

    Canned food is ok, you just need to subtract calories from the dry. People don’t realize that canned food isn’t more fat or calories, it’s more water! I used to give my Rotty Victor Professional as a pup for 2 years until the last recall. I then found out about Hollywood Feed and they recommended Fromm and Nutrisource. I got the Nutrisource until recently finding this channel and saw that it had elevated levels of calcium and phosphorus. Here I thought I was giving my lil buddy a decent kibble but come to find out, kibble isn’t that great… I’m so confused 😕. After seeing this video, I decided to give him Kirkland Mature. My thought process is why pay a premium on kibble if kibble is already crap anyway. I’m gonna use this as a base and just add some steak and salmon and fruits and veggies every now and again until I can financially transition him over to a raw diet. 🫤

  • @AnimalDocRea

    @AnimalDocRea

    I’d consider a consultation with a boarded vet nutritionist at acvim.org. Addding meat will unbalance the diet and feeding. Raw opens your pet up to pathogens. A boarded nutritionist can help you formulate a home cooked diet that is appropriate if that’s what you desire. Simply adding meat and veggies is not the solution.

    Thanks Dr. I appreciate the response. But here in lies my dilemma. Allow me to rant…Not to say all of this information isn’t great and useful, I just find certain things questionable. Like how is it that my grandparents dogs and dogs I grew up with, from Mastiffs, Dobermans, German shepherds were raised on Alpo and then as I got older, we started giving them iams Eucanuba because it was supposedly better and these dogs lived damn near forever with no health issues until they were in their 20’s. There was no such thing as allergies or proper ratios because we not only gave them their regular food but also table scraps. They didn’t have worms or any of the sort. Nowadays with all this information it seems like your dog can possibly die if it doesn’t eat the necessary scientifically proportioned nutrient dense foods. I know no scenarios are the same but I don’t think with today’s technology in food and me no longer giving my dogs pizza, chips and chicken bones,that giving them better alternatives is going to harm them..or can it. My dogs never went to the vet, hardly had vaccines. All of them had flea collars..which I don’t do now and none of the had any ailments. I’m older now and when you know better you do better so it just gets frustrating because my mom’s jack russell has a chicken allergy 🫤 which I hear is very common, but almost laughable. But he’s on Zignature lamb and kangaroo and his stools are still somewhat loose and he has borderline high cholesterol. My 3 yr old Rotty Doberman mix has an iron gut and eats banisters, dry wall and just about everything else not nailed down and has an iron gut and never has diarrhea. I take him to the vet and everyone marvels at his coat, his teeth and all his labs are great. I’m still trying to figure this all out. I just want a simple what’s good, what’s not approach and hopefully my dog can live til 25 like Hannibal my Bull Mastiff, Great Dane mix. Sheesh 🤭
