Rabbi Joe Black as Tiny Tov on "The Magic Door" - cir 1979?
Музыка
From 1979-1981 I played the role of Tiny Tov on the WBBM TV Children's program, "The Magic Door." I was actually the 4th Tiny Tov. the first was Irv Kaplan, then Jerry Loeb, then Charles Gerber and then, me. I was incredibly fortunate to be able to be a part of Chicago Television history while I was an undergraduate at Northwestern University. Here are a few clips from the show. I don't believe that any others exist from this time period. As I come across others, I will post them as well. This is not a complete episode - but it gives a taste of Tiny and his role in the production.

I grew up watching this very early Sunday mornings… ah, the memories! Thank you!!
I watched this as a young child, and I'm not even Jewish.
I think my mom briefly worked on the show as a song writer, remember visiting the studios as a very young child and seeing all kind of puppets in a storage room and when we stopped to eat there were some folks dressed up as fruit of the loom characters eating between takes I imagine :)
I loved this show when I was young. I didn't realize it was done by a rabbi or that it had Jewish teachings until I was an adult. Thank you for your wonderful show! I especially loved the "come open the magic door with me" song :)

Wow I did not realize but how would we. We were children. We just liked the show.
I watched this as a kid. Hey there were only four channels in Chicago back then LOL. I had no idea it was a Jewish show until I was much older. It was a total mitzvah, you guys! Shalom, y'all.
I loved this back in the early 60's, such fond memories. I searched for this show many times, if you can please post more.
When we still had Saturday morning cartoons, I remember this show being on at 6 or 6:30 a.m. on Saturdays.
My mom grew up loving this show! She says she watched it every Sunday morning after Jubilee Showcase. Do you have any more?
I remember this show like yesterday I remember this show like yesterday it used to come on Sundays
Rabbi Joe, so glad you posted these clips! Most history of that show is lost forever. Though I'm not Jewish, I did send in for, and received a Torahvile Citizenship Certificate! I watched the show a few years prior to these clips, back in the early 1970's, but this is the show format I'm familiar with. Thanks for the memories!
I loved this show! "Shalom!" What a great program for kids from an entertainment and educational aspect, but also to promote an understanding other cultures and religions. We could use more shows to educate us and help us understand other people and not be afraid of what we don't know.
What a great message this was (is)!
The theme song came from Beethoven 6th Symphony 5th movement Blessings and Hugs 💖💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕
My sister and I watched this when we didn’t go to church on Sunday. We had no idea it was Jewish.
I used to watch this every Sunday morning because it was the only show on for kids. I never liked it but It was something to keep me somewhat entertained until Star Trek began at 10:30 am on Channel 9. I stopped watching it when I was 9 or 10 when I realized it was for Jewish kids and I wasn’t Jewish.
Nice guitar riff, Rabbi 😊
Thank you for this! I assume the sound is overloaded on the tape? Rich Bernal was one of my teachers at Columbia College, and I have transfered some tapes from the mid 80s when Bill Leff was a cast member.
Always the Rabbi! But when did they change the Arum-zum-zum theme song?
Thanks for the post! Great memories… Anyone know what the words A-room-zoom zoom…Gilly, gilly gilly gilly gilly ahhsa-sah, mean from the opening song?
