    Baja Blast from Taco Bell was my favorite drink. I'm an American who moved to Canada. In Canada the Taco Bells don't carry Baja Blast, so when we would go to the US to visit my family it was a special treat. Just recently they started selling it in stores and it's been a dream come true.

    "Business as usual" in the UK often is said sarcastically, when things just carry regardless of whatever the situation is, and it doesn't always mean business, it just whatever carrys on.

  • @silky0439

    @silky0439

    3 жыл бұрын

    Interesting. Business as usual in the States means, nothing out of the ordinary. If you work a 9 - 5 with/without problems, you do it. Go home for the weekend, come back Monday. If they're "Foreseeable problems" you go on call. THAT is Business as usual. However, if it is UNFORSEEN, Time and a half up to double Time and a half can be made depending on the specialty. I hope I cleared it up a bit. It also depends on the company structure but compensation is required By Law.

    14:19 - Yes, BAU is also a business term in the US. Depending on your situation and line of work, it can be a very big grey area. Corporations are reinventing what is BAU forcing employees to find ways to get around it. Three years ago my employer (for 30+ years) decided to restructure and change all the wage employees in my division (200+) to salary eliminating overtime pay with no adjustments to individual income. The average annual loss of overtime income per employee was around $8,000. Employees are now working 10+ hours per week OT but not getting compensated for those hours. I was not impacted as I accepted a salaried position (minor promotion in job skillset only) a year earlier. This is from a corporation with well OVER 200k employees and $1t in worldwide assets.😳

    @rSlash: Regarding the BAU: "Business as usual" when on a fixed salary means in this case that you are responsible for the workload that comes in regardless of what time it is. If you're on call, it's expected you fill your duty even if it's not during your regular hours. Normally though, you'll be compensated for it in extra time off since most of these contracts specifies a certain number of hours . Albeit not in this case apparently. Hope this helps.

    So, for example, if you are a salesman, and someone calls you up wanting to buy from the company, you're supposed to go through the process of selling to them, even though you're off the clock? I think that would be called "on call" in America....though "on call" is usually reserved for emergencies; I've never heard of anyone being on call for regular business stuff. How interesting!

    @@eldupont3095 Yea, kinda like that. In my experience it was a thing in the elevator business in case people got stuck in elevators. You'd have a service agent "on call" but if said person had to get up in the middle of the night, it'd still be a part of the job description, so nothing added to their wages. They'd still write down the hours for this and be granted extra vacation days if the hour count exceeded 6 hours. (1 day per 6 hour "on call"-time.

    I work at an IT support/private cloud hosting company (in America) and it seems very similar to the OP's situation. Our staff that handles infrastructure (servers/networks) are salary employees who contractually work a minimum of 40 hours per week -- key word minimum. That's typically 8 hours in the office during normal work hours, but if there is a critical issue in a sector which you're responsible for then your job is to fix it, after hours or not (it will be worse in the morning if you don't). Off hour work is pretty common when you're dealing with potential downtime on critical systems, too. That said, it's pretty common for engineers who have already hit their 40 hours to leave early as long as they don't have any prior obligations -- the stress and inherent chaos actually results in pretty flexible hours. I sympathize with the OP in regard to the excessive off hours work if they weren't able to check out early or take time off in exchange, but in my opinion their manager made a mistake agreeing to give advance notice, since they should know emergencies rarely give such a courtesy. We do have "on watch" and "on call" schedules where you are given advance notice, but to my company "business as usual" would basically mean "make sure your stuff keeps working". If something is bad enough that I get a call at 9:30 pm when I'm out having drinks with friends then you can believe I'm pulling out a laptop and working from the bar.

    In the USA it is fairly common for employment to be salaried at 40 hours, but expectation is to work more than that when required. Sometimes you are compensated with a day off or a bonus. I worked as a business analyst in a payroll group. I was salaried at 40 hours a week, but typically worked a minimum of 60 hours. We had vacation blackouts and several times I worked 48-72 hours straight. Lunch was at my desk and no breaks except to walk to the restroom or coffee pot. I was even "on call" to help our production team with issues or answer questions which included a Christmas day when I was cooking for family. Production thought my schedule was wrong when it wasn't. That is why you often hear of job burnout, work/life balance and sometimes lawsuits.

    This sounds like an operations job. They're contracted to work weekdays, but some processes can't be carried out on weekdays or during normal business hours, so you have to come in or log on outside of those hours to perform those processes. Business as usual would be regular processes that you have to carry out every week or on some other recurring schedule. Known in advance would be one-offs that you get notified as needing to perform. On call is for when those regular processes fail, and they need somebody there to repair the damage. In this story, you don't get paid extra for business as usual and known in advance, probably because they expect you to take that time out of the rest of your week if it's an outside of business hours situation. However, they said that on call was supposed to involve supplementary pay, so if they answer the phone, and it's not a normal process or one they were informed of, they are supposed to get paid for it. The assumption is that they would be notified in advance that they are on call, and they would only get paid for the time that they spend fixing issues. This would allow the employee to know not to schedule drinks with friends without being prepared to work, and it compensates the employee for the time that they spend working off the clock.

    IDK, the attitude of the teacher „How is this my fault“ is debatable. I remember how one of my classes grade dropped from one semester to another semester from a solid 2 to a horrible 4 just by a teacher change. Im not saying he is totally wrong, I just want to point out that.. teachers do have a big impact on the performance of their students...

  • @FlameUser64

    In 11th grade I was way too late registering for my courses and ended up in an English class that was, unofficially speaking, "English for dummies". I'd been a straight-A student in English for the entirety of public school before that point. Never got below 90% on a course. So I end up in this class, and the teacher sucks. She complains about me reading Terry Pratchett novels during reading time and tells me to read something "more advanced", sticking me with 1984. Clearly she has not done her research on Pratchett. When she's reading out loud to the class, she routinely skips or switches out small words, like "a" versus "the", or "the" versus "his", or even "you" versus "he", totally ruining the meaning of sentences and forcing me to ignore her and read it all myself. At one point we get one of those stupid "you have to start the story with this exact line" short story assignments, and I have to do grammatical gymnastics to actually set that up as the first line of the story. She proceeds to "correct" my grammar in a whole bunch of different places, even for some really normal and obvious grammatical structures, and then docks _more_ points when the narrative that results from her "corrections" is a broken, nonsensical mess. I have never gotten below 90% in English before or _since_ this course. In this one course specifically, I got 84%. That's a B. It was also the highest mark in the class.

    So, along the funny couple things, this story is from when my husband and I were dating and together for about five months: He texted me to say he was going to the store after work and if I wanted him to grab anything. I told him I would like some gummy worms for a comfort snack (was sick with a bad infection at the time) and a Redbull. I also listed some stuff at the house we needed (eggs, milk, that kind of stuff.) When he got home and we unpacked groceries, he forgot the sweets and my Redbull, but grabbed himself some cheese curds for snacks food (Wisconsin, booiiis.) “Ooohhh, I see how it is! You grabbed your snacks, but forgot all about mine!” I said this in a funny way, not mean. He was so sorry, and he felt so bad about it, but I said it was alright and not to be upset. The next day: He comes home with a 4-pack of Redbull, a 4lb bag of gummy worms, bottle of ibuprofen I needed, a small devils food cake, and a small teddy bear holding a heart... needless to say, I scored when I married this man and his “malicious compliance” about my gummy worms lol

    Congratulations. :D My husband is like that too. They're the greatest, aren't they? The first issue we had in our marriage, over a big misunderstanding mind you, that really hurt me, I told him I'd forgive him if he got me my favorite cookie and a flower. He brought me a box of cookies with my top two favorites, plus one more I'd wanted to try out, and a bouquet.
