I’m convinced some of these outdated techniques- tons of baking powder, color correctors, dripping loads of primers and liquid foundations onto your face- were just created by brands to make us use up products quicker!

a lot of these techniques such as baking and colour correcting have been used past and present by drag queens. they’re used by performers who aim to feminise their faces and perform under stage lighting, so it’s not suitable for regular everyday people. i truly can’t believe i used to wake up early to do my makeup before school, i made sure to bake my face everyday 😭 & i cant stand the dripping and mixing of products onto the face, clickbait at its finest.

the one problem i have with makeup trends (techniques included) is that everyone “has to” have the exact look according to some media, and then you just end up with wasted products you’ll never use in a few months when the trend changes. we’re all so different. some girls i know look amazing with those 2013 pomade brows while i don’t, but then i look better with foxy eyeliner than they do. it’s all about your style and facial features, so i wish we just let different trends coexist without claiming one particular thing is the best. but yeah some of these techniques are truly crazy

Thank you for saying this, I totally agree with you! There is so much pressure to follow a certain look, even if it doesn’t flatter you or make you happy. I hated when, in like 2016, everyone thought they had to be warm and tan, only using warm tones, even if they weren’t warm toned. If everyone participated only in trends they liked rather than because it’s a trend we’d get so much more diversity and everyone could find and keep their ride or die products. Also from a girl who still does 2013 pomade brows, thank you for acknowledging that it’s still okay to do them like this, don’t have enough hair for the soft and fluffy look.

I think that there is a difference between what is "office appropriate" and what is trendy. Maybe it is just all the women I know but for 99% of our working days we don't want to spend over an hour each morning on our makeup and eye looks like he did are only for maybe a Saturday night. Some of these trends looked awesome on social media and you see these people in real life and it was weird as hell. And then there are eye shapes and that what works for one does not work doe all, especially nono and hooded eyelids.

I’ve been in a depressive spiral for about four months (broken up with, moved out on my own, struggling to make rent, and got so bad that I had to get an emotional support animal) and in that time I have barely done my makeup at all. It felt so disheartening to start to see progress in my mental state just to go back a step because I failed at doing my makeup. Luckily I had videos of Robert to go along with and do makeup alongside, and it ended up making me be like “eh it’s ok I’m out of practice, I’ll get better.” But hearing Robert, the person who made me want to go into makeup artistry, say that he’s out of practice and feels like he doesn’t know what he’s doing is so relieving to me. I feel so much better knowing that it still even happens to someone like him, who has been practicing for so long and is so good at it.

you're probably being way too hard on yourself. One thing I do know is that makeup is very therapeutic, and throwing yourself into something creative after a break up is a really good way to recover, so just keep going and don't think too much about the end result. Its all practise, and it will lift you out of unhappiness. Also, at the end of 2020 I broke up with someone who had been abusive to me for a year, I had to involve the police, and I was in a complete mess. About 4 months later by chance I started talking to someone on twitter, we went on a date the next day (6 feet apart on a park bench in the freezing cold as it was in the covid restrictions), and we've been together ever since. He's absolutely wonderful, and I've never been happier. Don't give up on yourself, there's always something or someone else around the corner. Learn the lessons from this last relationship and try to focus on what makes you happy, bit by bit you'll move on until one day you'll realise you're happy again x

For a few years there everyone was applying makeup like a drag queen. That isn't a dig at drag makeup, but the everyday person doesn't need that much makeup on their skin. Also, drag is meant to feminize the masculine aspects of a male face. If you already have a feminine face you don't need to do that.

I’m Asian by ethnicity, & I’ve given up trying to do what’s trendy. I found a lot of trends are Euro/Caucasian-centric in terms of eye shape, colors, & contouring. What’s usually popular on TikTok or IG doesn’t always translate to people of color or, say, people like myself with a monolid. I’ve found that staying true to myself with a less-is-more approach, will never get old. Trends come & go but a classic approach is forever.

My brows are so over plucked (thank you 1960’s) that I have to do whatever I can to have a reasonable brow. This might be out of your wheelhouse, but could you give us with over plucked brows some help/ideas on how to achieve a more normal brow? Love watching your videos.

I wore makeup on state occasions when I was younger, but back in the '80s and '90s, the current trends didn't really suit me, so I would slap something purple on my eyelids, go ham on mascara and black eyeliner, and wear far too much blush. It wasn't a good look, so I stopped until I was in my 50s. Circumstances forced me to reinvent myself, and one of the ways I distanced myself from the old me was to start wearing makeup, but I wasn't going back to the '80s. I started watching videos. Baking was everywhere, so I tried it. Baking 50 year old under eyes did not go well. In fact, I found that the extra-light, overly powdered concealer aged me more than I ever thought possible. I started matching my concealer to my skin, going light on it, and barely setting it, and lo and behold, now it's in style.

Overdrawn lips go hand in hand with that age bracket of ladies who are still pencilling in thin brows in shades 7 shades to dark for them. Along with the heavy black eyeliner. Arghhhh. If there is one thing my mother taught me was to embrace tones of brown rather than black everything, and she rarely wears make up beyond foundation.

I remember when I started getting into makeup, it was for me to cover up my acne, especially as most of the youtubers back in 2014 era promoted full coverage as better. Add on the baking powder etc. Felt weird about it coz my face felt so dry at first but then my oils come out. I'm thankful that I learned through later years by getting into skincare how your base skincare is more important than the primer and that full coverage doesn't mean it's good. I actually prefer semi coverage, I like to use BB creams and tinted sunscreen as the "foundation" and just powder here and there.

Thank you so much Robert! 💖 I'm an "old fashioned Hippie-Flower", and I start with a little bit of Make Up/very less of Foundation, but the Eyes are important in the early 70ties! And starting for me and us (all Girls around me,too) was using Kajal, the original fatty one, coming from India! 😀😉 It smears like "devil"...but we love it! 😂😉 And it doesn't hurt our Eye-Area! Because it is/or made before to save our Eyes (and the Eyes of little Babies in India , too!) for Infections. And than it starts to pluck our Brows! But I'm sooo happy that I didn't follow this "Fashion" so much as a lot of Girls and Women did! I follow my own Style, slowly learning what fit's me the Best! And I think: this was my best Idea and Behavior ever, about my "Look" and real beeing as a woman. We can and should play sometimes with our "Look", this can be totally fine, but to find a Way for ourselves to look like the Best Way and the realistic Way is the Best Attitude ever. You are great😍🤗😉 - and your Brother James, too💕👍❣😍😉

I always realized that it absolutely ruined the beautiful makeup I just had done. So I always skipped it, and I lied to them saying I did it, and they would congratulate me for the perfect makeup I did on the models, not knowing I wouldn't follow their oudtaded baking technique.

There is definitely a difference between 'outdated' techniques that are currently 'untrendy' and those that are not the optimal method. Some outdated techniques I still adore: blush draping, classic rounded cat eye, matte highlighting, jellyroll highlight, powderpuff application, contouring mouth corners. Techniques I do not miss: powder bronzer as 'contour' and powder bronzer *everywhere* for no reason.
