Introducing my 11 year old daughter to this in 2024! Timeless!
When my daughter was battling cancer this song made her so happy . Stipe, Buck, Mills and Kate from the B52's. My daughter has been gone for 9 years now. Everytime I hear SHP I get tears, She's moved on, but her favorite songs are still playing.

+Joel Heaton Everything happens for a reason, something good will come out of it even if its hard to believe. Our egos find difficult to addapt to the ways of the universe but in the big picture of things everything has meaning. Im sorry for your loss I cannot even imagine how difficult it must be to lose a child, I hope your experience helps other people and dont forget what she would have wanted you to do, keep going, try to be as happy as you can and feel always the love, help others and let others help you cause we are one big family, the consciousness of your daughter cant ever die, the body is just our tool to navigate this world, we are all the same with different roles.

It's funny because this video is almost 30 years old and it' still ironic. Anyone in America who is shiny and happy hasn't been paying attention. We have not attained equality; black people are still being killed by police over and beyond white people, trans folk heroes are denied and rejected from Military service and we have a racist as President.

@@marvinthemaniac7698 "Shiny Happy People Holding Hands" was a propaganda campaign started in China after the massacre at Tiananmen Square in 89. I feel like the sarcastic undertones of this song really capture that vibe of "be happy or else" especially when he makes a few references to the alternative which is complete misery. This song, for me anyway, is much deeper than the surface.

Kind of the antithesis to how the world is now especially. If everyone was happy. No one would be on drugs. If everyone loved their partners. No one would be divorced. Too bad the kids now a days will never know that feeling. Sorry Millenials. There was once a time before tinder when you could wake after an adventurous and beautiful meeting with another human being, and you knew it was just you and them and a radio playing in the background. Christ almighty, shut up. As someone who went to high school in the '90s I'm so tired of people talking like there was supposedly some period of time where everything was "good" just because it isn't now. If you were a child in the '90s, then your life was better during that time not because it was the '90s but because you were a child; rest assured there's plenty of awful shit at any era, it didn't coincidentally get worse during your own coming of age.

Rainy Jane Wow, that escalated quickly. Why you getting so pissed at a time where music reminds me of a particular time? Hell yeah it reminds me of good times, and I loved them so why not look back now and then and smile?? It's like you getting married and getting told you can't, years later, look upon that as a bad, or good thing, depending if you're a pain in the ass and he, or she. divorces you and leaves you up shit-creek without a boat, never mind a paddle. Call me crazy but reminding yourself of a cool time period you lived through is better than sitting thinking about bad shit all the time, as opposed to the before mentioned. It's obviously when i was a kid and care-free, but other music also reminds me of when I was in my 20s and when my kid was born etc...is that so fucking bad to reminisce about occasionally? I don't fucking obsess about it so you getting your knickers in a fucked-up knot over something that brings a dude back a few memories for nothing, man....but it's your ride, it's your trip, think as you please but don't assume others should all feel the same.

+Rainy Jane I was a child in '90. But this song is a tale of successful people. Thus "Shinig happy people". Was really a period of great big hill of hope. The economic of the world was growing. Only few unemployed workers was in west area. And the big wall of the comunism in Germany was broken down. And then for this reasons there was new hope, (not realistic), for a amazing future about a forever, (never ending), climb to the progress. Excuse my poor english. Sorry.

They are proud of it but it was supposed to be a bit of a joke. People had been moaning about how REM songs weren't happy pop songs and they were poking fun at both the idea that they *couldn't* write pop songs and the general state of vapid radio pop. But they did it a little too well. It's not what they want people to know their work from. They wouldn't have released a single and done a video if they weren't happy with their work.

I think it's an artist's folly. They were characterized by making more serious, introspective, deep songs, but then they certainly think that a more "feel good" song de-characterizes their work. Idiocy to think like that... This is being too narrow-minded! I don't see any problem with a "serious" band (which I like) doing something more upbeat sometimes! I see this as something humble and open-minded! Kate Pierson's participation made this song very B52's style... and I don't think it would have been so successful without her!

The song, the entire is production is cool - but my God is Kate at another level. Perfectly natural and flowing. Her energy is captivating.
REM hated this song with a passion and only wrote it as a joke mocking the executives who asked them for a "happy song". They didn't expect it to be a hit.

As far as I recall, they took the phrase "shiny happy people" from Chinese propaganda. It's clear to see the sarcasm in this song and I love it for that, but they nailed the earworm style of music too well and I find it annoying as hell now.

I’m a Gen X and this song brings back simple memories of the 90s when life is not as crazy and weird. And messed up like it is today where people can be people and kids can have a childhood.
I still remember hearing this on the radio and thinking “is that Kate Pierson? What is going on?” Then I saw the video. I had been a 52’s fan for years, and I’d know that voice anywhere. I still love this song. The 90’s were one of my favorite eras. Good times!
