I feel like even though "you know?" is technically a question, they're not really asking anything.

yeah but when you're upset and we say "quoi" at then end, "you know" isn't the same at all. "quoi" is was more assertive

The British upper classes had the same thing as the final "quoi" until the end of the 20th century. For example, my great uncle used to say things like, "Spiffing weather we're having this month, what!". The "what" is an emphatic rather than an interrogative. Pip-pip! 🎩

I look at the "quoi" at the end of a sentence they way we Anglos would throw "just" in the middle of a sentence. For example, I was subleasing an apartment in France and the couple that came to see it said, "C'est trop petit, quoi." I interpreted that as, "It's just too small." See how that works?

ah yeah in that context it can work. but it wouldn't work for the examples where it means "then"

Much like french swear words (which you can "level up" by combining separate swear words into a series of them), you can also level up your sass by making different combinations of "quoi", "ça" and "là" at the end of your phrases.

In colloquial Australian English we used to say "ay" at the end of a sentence, sometimes inflected as in a rhetorical question. "I was just walkin' dairn the street, ay. An this guy drives past an just gives me the finger ay". It's not used in normal conversations at all, but can still be heard by men trying to affect a jovial kind of intimacy, ay.

In British English, I believe 'quoi' at the end is similar to putting 'like' or even 'but' (Scotland) at the end.

I really like the access you have to everyday French and how we as non-French speakers should understand this better. French is a complex language with many variations, which is not always easy to understand for foreigners, even if one has learned the words as such. Keep up the good work :)

Interesting. I've been speaking French with a Haitian, he lives in Brazil, for about 4 months now and I noticed that I've never heard him use quoi, not once. He's 29 and speaks French very well; he sounds like many French people in France In fact I really like his voice. Note, I lived 3 years in France in the 80s. Said Haitian is a French and Creole teacher. I've used quoi on occasion while speaking with him and I've even been tempted to ask him if he or Haitians in general use the word much. While living in France many of my friends were young and of African descent and I noticed they used quoi a lot. Languages are so interesting. I actually find myself trying not to use quoi now with my Haitian French tutor. I think if one is used to using it it can be a bit of a challenge to stop using it so much. Merci beaucoup.

I think one of the main reasons these days for people mistakenly pronouncing the e at the end of French words is that the voices on the Duolingo app (especially the male one) do this in a VERY exaggerated way. I wish they would change that.

It's really used when you feel what you just said is not fully explained but you know that the person gets the point, so there's no need to go more into details. Or if you're trying to explain something and find a new angle while knowing that it doesn't necessarily tell the whole picture, but again you know that the person will get the point.

Merci for this! Sounds similar to saying "word" or "straight up" in urban American English as a means of emphasis.

Most of time " quoi ?" at the end of a sentence , should be replaced by a question tag " n'est-ce pas ?" For example : " Ahh oui , donc tu es arrivé plus tôt que prévu , quoi ? " , you can say : " Ah oui , donc tu es arrivé plus tôt que prévu , n'est-ce pas ?" In English : " Ohh yeah , so you arrived earlier than expected , didn't you ?"

I feel like putting the „quoi“ at the end of a sentence is kinda the equivalent of starting a sentence with „I mean...“ or „after all“. I remember asking a woman on ebay how long a dress was and she replied „Elle touche presque le sol... c‘est une robe longue quoi“ (=the dress almost touches the ground. After all it‘s a long dress). I know that‘s not quite it, but the closest I‘ve found to an English translation😅

British people used to use “what” at the end of sentences, too, though nowadays it sounds rather affected.

Not if you make sure to say "Wot?", lol. I think people are more likely to say "innit?", which I always say is the British version of the French "n'est-ce pas?" or the American "y'know/"

for the dutchies (if there are any) It's like the saying TOCH!!! at the end

no let's say a friend would give me a good news, I would say "that's great then" but in French I would say "c'est bien ça" or "c'est bien du coup"... it really depends on the context and what emotion you want to convey "c'est bien quoi" sounds a bit sassy, a little annoyed

Back in high school, we were taught that "n'est-ce pas?" served this kind of purpose. Do people not use that any more, or is it a bit different?

hmm "n'est-ce pas" is quite formal, it's used but generations that are older than us generally or in formal situations. We quite rarely if ever use it. Maybe in business meetings. you can hear people still use it sometimes but not nearly as much as French students use it. we've heard French student abusing that expression lol

It sounds like when certain Brits put “yeah” at the end of every other statement when they’re explaining something, or venting.

So, is this what you say instead of the "n'est-ce pas" that French people don't really say? Kinda like "hein", which can also be at the end of sentences? Or not the same meaning?

ah no it's different. with "n'est-ce pas" you're expecting an answer. "quoi" is way more informal too just like "hein"

ah interesting, I think it's pretty similar yeah ^^ but depending on the tone you can make a "quoi" informal but not too rude or kind of aggressive.

You can even have the two quoi's in a row: Tu fais quoi, quoi !! Answer: je vais là, là ! 😅

How about ‘ Quoi “ stays behind the adjective like “ c’est pas possible quoi ?”

In Quebec you'll hear "là" used just like this, all... the... time... tacked onto the end of sentences. Ça va faire, là! =P

Have you read the Jeeves and Wooster novels by P G Wodehouse set in 1920s England? Bertie Wooster is a UK aristocrat and Jeeves is his Valet,. Wooster often ends sentences with "what.." ("I say, Jeeves, get the car - what!") which was aristocratic "street talk" of the time! England leading France by 100 years ! ;-) 'Z avez lu les romans Jeeves and Wooster de l'auteur anglais P G Wodehouse ? Bertie Wooster est un aristo anglais pendant les années 1920 et Jeeves est son valet. Wooster termine ses phrases souvent avec le mot "what ... " (I say Jeeves, get the car, what/Je dis Jeeves, cherchez la voiture, quoi) - le "street talk" du temps chez les aristos ! (L'Angleterre une centaine des années devant La France ! ;-)

@@Street_French Dialect ou culture locale un peu comme le "ou bien" a la fin d'une question en suisse (canton de Vaud) ou "savoir" à la place de "pouvoir" en Belgique (ex: "saurais tu me passer le sel stp?").

@@Street_French Oui c'est typiquement du nord de la France en effet , ils utilisent beaucoup des "quoi ?" ou même des "hein ?" en guise de " question tag" à la fin , mais je pense que ça s'est démocratisé jusque dans le milieu de la France , chez moi dans le centre ouest on utilise beaucoup le "hein ?" aussi.Par contre dans le sud de la France je pense que ça s'utilise beaucoup moins .
