I was actually taught this without an explanation and naturally intuitively do this. It is at the point where the weights the other way “feels funny” because my peripheral vision would see something it wasn’t supposed to see! It was never explained but muscle memory makes me do it like this every time. Thanks to my coach who showed me the right way and thanks for exposing why!
I think it is easier getting it off of the rack "backwards" because the way he shows it, you have less grip on the pickup because it is angled away from the lip. You're going against gravity and optimal angles. When he takes it off of the barbell, it is the other way which optimizes grip. Either way doesn't really matter because you have to make compromises either way, so it really doesn't matter.
@griffdog141

I’m happy when people remember to flush at my gym.
The plates at my gym have three evenly spaced, hand sized, holes near the edge.

Bless this video. Should be required viewing upon any public gym registration. Assuming people put plates back!
I have a feeling like this was filmed expressly to be played at Rip's funeral one day.

This is my favorite video on youtube. By far. It's not even close.
Our gym has symmetric plates (no lip) but I still watch this over and over again.
I also have a hand skill with years of experience.

Imagine being this guy's neighbor and being told that you're mowing your grass wrong every week.
Good point. I have been taking the plate off the rack correctly, but then I have been flipping the plate around to put it on the bar with the numbers facing outwards for years. Now I know better, and see how dangerous the incorrect way of doing it could be. One sweaty hand and that is it.
