Quickly Fix a Sagging Door - Stop Door Rubbing

Better Door Security for Under $1:

If you have a sagging door and the door is rubbing the frame or the door won't shut, what can you do to fix it? In this video we give you two simple ways to fix a sagging door. This video focuses on doors that have dropped on the door latch side. That is, the door latch side is lower than the door hinge side.
How can you spot a sagging door? Look at the horizontal gap at the top of the door. A door that is sagging on the door latch side will have a wider gap at the top on the door latch side and a smaller gap at the top on the door hinge side.
It is also identifiable by the vertical gap on the door latch side. The gap will often be smaller at the top and wider at the bottom of the door.
When my house settled, my front door started rubbing on the top right corner of the frame. But a sagging door may also rub against the frame at the bottom of the door (rubbing on the threshold). The solution is the same for doors rubbing at the top and at the bottom.
You can adjust a sagging door easily using one of two methods: by putting longer screws into the top door hinge or by adjusting the door hinges.
The easiest and best solution to fix a door that is hitting the frame at the top side of the door or a door that is rubbing against the threshold is to install 3" inch screws into the top door hinge.
This will suck the door on the hinge side into the 2X4 framing and fix the tilt of a door that his hitting or rubbing on the top corner of the frame or a door that is rubbing on the bottom of the frame.
Another simple fix, if the longer screws don't work, is to adjust the door hinges. By adjusting the top door hinge you can pull the door closer to the hinge side of the frame. You can adjust the hinge by using pliers, channel locks, or a crescent wrench. The crescent wrench is often the best tool to adjust a door hinge, but the others will work if you don't mind a little more scuffing on the hinge.
When these ways to fix a sagging door have been done correctly, the vertical and horizontal gaps on the door should be seen to be more consistent.
If your door is rubbing against the frame on the latch side, no matter where it is rubbing, adjusting all the door latches to pull the door towards the door latch side will fix that issue too.

There are a number of videos on this topic, and your's of the ones I've seen so far, is far and away the best and easiest to understand and also the quickest in the sense you don't waste people's time with a bunch of irrelevant stuff or just floundering around. One thing--a knuckle bender works well on the bending of the hinge barrels and another, what is this "commercial way" of fixing this recurring issue for so many people and businesses? I'll bet a lot of folks would be interested in just what it is even if it's expensive and not something everyone could afford. Great video. Keep them coming. Thanks for posting this. The bit about the long screws to avoid the problem in the future is also a great idea few seem to know about.

I have the problem you describe, but unfortunately, the hinges (which are 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 ball bearing hinges as the door is very heavy) have non-removable hinge pins. What to do in this case? Should I unscrew the leaf on the jamb side before bending the barrel? Many thanks for your lucid exposition!

I would try the 3.5" screw first in the top hinges. It it's a really heavy door, that may fix it. Elsewise bending the hinges will be difficult without a hinge doctor tool. They're pretty expensive but if you need one here's the link. amzn.to/3GKL8yv

@@LocksmithRecommended Thanks muchly for the suggestions. I did try the long screws without much luck. Will take a look at the hinge doctor tool - also, it occurs to me that it might be more cost effective to replace all the hinges (one at a time) with ones whose pins *are* removable.

This is primarily for a residential doors cuz the hinges can be more easily bent. There is a product called Hinge Doctor that's for commercial hinges. But it's pretty expensive.

Hey Robert. My door is the opposite of sagging. It's hitting the top of the door frame and won't close. So it's hitting along the top (horizontal part of the door) not the vertical side of the door. I suspect I have to work with the bottom hinge? All screws are tight in the frame and door. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Do you bend counter clockwise?

  • @LocksmithRecommended

    @LocksmithRecommended

You are bending the hinge in the opposite direction of the sagging. So if it is sagging to the right you're bending the hinge to the left. Sagging to the left you're bending the hinge to the right.
