Great tips. My strike plate shifted pretty darn low. I never thought to check the height because i couldnt imagine the house settling or swelling that much.

:36 Figured this problem out when the latch does not extend all the way. It works for the type of latch that has the brass ring around it. Take the ring off and the latch will pop out all the way. Readjust how you put on the ring back on. The ring comes in 2 halves. Reverse the sides the latch was on and it will probably stay popped out. Voila!

Here in 2020 and this still works great, thanks for the clear straight forward advice 👍

Thanks Bill my latch was low on a metal fire door . A couple whacks with a hammer on a small metal bar inserted it in the latch hole and I am good . Thanks

So i had the part that goes into the strike backwards. None of the videos offered that as a suggested problem. I'm clearly hopeless as diy.

Nice video, my problem seem all the sudde the door latch seems to short to fit in the hole....this doesnt make any sense how this happened. Should i just a new door handle that has a longer latch to fit the whole?

What about if they are both positioned correctly but it just doesn’t latch? The lock works also, but when the door is shut, it doesn’t lock. I hope the way I’m explaining the issue makes sense. Several of the doors in my home have this issue, and it’s driving me nuts. 😞

If the latch no longer is aligned with the latch/strike plate then by moving the plate up/down you are only putting a Band-Aid on the problem. WHY are they no longer aligned? Is the door sagging? Try tightening the hinges. Is the whole door frame is pulling away from the wall on the hinge side? Drive longer screws into the frame hinge and pull the door back up. There are several reasons for the two not to be aligned. You NEED to sort out WHY they are misaligned.

Great job! In my case latch seems to be relocated horizontally not vertically. In this case, should adjust the door or latch? Thank you!

My problem in this house we moved into is the latch isn't close enough to sit securely in the strike plate. Idk how to move the door or latch over to make it a tighter fit when I close the door. Any suggestions?

My boyfriend intentionally made my room's door never lock. I cannot lock from inside, the deadlatch doesn't hold, it opens locked or not. How to fix it? Please help me, hate seeing him!

That looks WAY low, not a bit and how did you not have to remake a new hole for the latch. That was crazy off.

So have another question,when making the hole in the door with a hole drill for the door knob is this best when the door is hung and o I've already painted it ,should I have made the hole before painting,??? Thank you x

Hi, make the hole before painting. This way you don’t risk damaging the finished paint 👍

Neither of those were my problem since when I did the pencil marks it lined up, my doors only latch in place if I push against the door really hard

If your door doesn’t latch unless you push weight against it really hard it could still be and issue with the strike plate. Not whether it’s high enough or low enough. It could be the fact that it’s not set far enough back and is too close to the edge of the door frame.

What do I do when the whole door frame door has moved away from the strike plate that's my issue there's a nice little gap and now a strong wind opens me door LUL

Hi, depending on how much the door jamb has moved you can put some packers or shims behind the hinges to push the door over towards the strike plate ( if it’s s small gap ) or even put some behind the strike plate itself. If you need a video on how to do this let me know 👍

This is the incorrect way to fix this problem, you should adjust the door, not the strike plate. Any professional would know this, might be easy, but is only a temporary fix.
