A great album and concert ! Elvis was in fine form !!

The FTD of this is a complete dog’s breakfast. The reverb is over the top and it’s edited. The Legacy release is spot on on AND comes with an extra concert.

I bought the original vinyl album when released and did not know it was edited, love it 🎉

I think Elvis is more into his performance here than "Aloha"or "Madison Square Garden" ,he sounds completely straight,happy and relaxed in front of his hometown crowd,i bought all three of these live albums when they came out in my early teens and played them on repeat!

Among later 70s shows, this one shines perhaps to the top. Elvis mood, vocals, and all aspects were hittin' on all 8 cylinders. I bought the memphis show on Vinyl back in the 70s I'm happy with that. Audience sounds ok.

Side note: Elvis Presley's "GOOD TIMES" album was released in the U.S. on the day this Memphis album was recorded... March 20, 1974.

I got this back when it came out and I remember listening to it full blast on my car stereo. It was the first time I felt like I was actually at an Elvis show. So the added echo really enhanced it for me. Disappointed to hear some of the dialogue was edited though.

The new "Elvis: Memphis" 5CD set will contain the "As Recorded in Memphis" Concert. Apparently complete, without overdubs and remixed/remastered by Matt R-S.

I can see this getting a new set release at some point.

I have 2 copies of this FTD and,(at the time) and now, it’s ok, and I think the Legacy Edition does sound better, BUT, not perfect by any stretch, (I remember the Legacy Edition got murdered over on FECC). Elvis’ vocals are mixed way down, but honestly, I haven’t played the disk in a very long time. The second disk, FTD 48 Hours To Memphis, is awesome and the sound is incredible for a Mono tape. 😊 There are some edits, but at least The Legacy edition had the false start of “Help Me” included, which wasn’t on the FTD

Hi Frankie! This is Paul Gwyn going by "Allen" now. ~ In my honest opinion, some of the songs (such as "Tryin' to Get to You") sound much better on the FTD issue, while other songs (such as "Polk Salad Annie") sound better on the SONY Legacy Edition issue. It's all a matter of personal preference and taste.

It sounds ok to me.

Btw how is everythjng in Iowa…. saw on news the huge tornadoes that blew through there!! I remembered Jamie lives somewhere in Iowa. Hoping all is well ❤

I have the Legacy set. The sound isn't perfect but it's pretty good.

The FTD audience sounds almost mono, no spaciousness at all like the legacy. Sad, this concert hasn’t got the attention that MSG received. With all the hype around how the audience and ambience was recorded at great effort … I haven’t heard the mix we need. It’s truly one of Elvis’ best live performances… very high energy!

Great reviews again guys, how do rate the audio on the original album version included in the albums box set? Remastered by Vic of course? Cheers JnJ ❤❤

It’s a superb representation of the original album - questionable overdubs, missing tracks and all. If you just want the album in digital format, it’s the way to go.

John, I say there are too many good/great concerts from 1974 for me to name just one or two, but the March 20, 1974 Memphis concert is definitely near the top on my list.

@@Allen-vl7zq I agree. For me, the go to 74 shows are the Memphis shows from March and opening night for the Summer Festival in Vegas.

I like the March 1st show on "Sold Out." I've also played the Nevada Nights and Las Vegas '74 FTDs a good bit.

Yeah, the mix on this is quite poor. They went so overboard making it sound "live" that it sounds quite unnatural. Everything is just drenched in reverb. I find the usual opinion that the Legacy edition buries E's vocal to be off the mark. The level of his vocal is just fine - it's just that the EQ on it is a little thin/tinny. The mix has a whole is lacking a little something (it was Matt Ross Spang's debut, IIRC) but it's much much better than the FTD mix. One weird thing about the Legacy mix - compare Steamroller to the FTD and Platinum mixes. The piano is buried on that track on the Legacy. The bass guitar is also pretty low.

John & Jamie, I really like the booklet and photos included with this FTD set. However, my main knock against the artwork is the unoriginal & unnecessary white border around the front cover. It was the first-of-nine "classic album/EP" FTDs that had a mysterious white border. What the heck were they thinking?? ~ As for the sound quality, I do like the mix and overall sound of this cd. In my honest opinion, some of the songs (such as "Tryin' to Get to You") sound much better on the FTD issue, while other songs (such as "Polk Salad Annie") sound better on the SONY Legacy Edition issue. It's all a matter of personal taste and preference.

I kinda get the white border. It’s an aesthetic choice that makes it almost like you are presenting an artwork in a frame. Not for everyone, but it never bothered me.

@@johnheath1868 I could understand that if FTD had been consistent with it, but they weren't. Their first six (6) "classic albums/EPs" (in 2003) didn't have a white border, but from 2004 - 2006 nine (9) of their fourteen (14) "classic albums/EPs" did have a white border. 🧐Then in 2007, they completely dropped the idea of the white border on all remaining "classic albums/EPs"... thank goodness!

@@johnheath1868 FTD has been consistent with releasing 1974 concerts on CDs at the wrong speed... some running too slow, some running too fast.

To each his own. The delay echo on Elvis’s voice is way overboard for me, not to mention how loud and compressed the sound is.
