Quick Snapping Hamstring Fix (Biceps Femoris Stretch + Meniscus Tear?)

Let me show you the stretches I've used to fix my snapping hamstring. This helped me fix my knee pain after I popped my knee (and probably had a "meniscus tear").

This stretch provides immediate relief for my issue. Would you recommend doing this stretch prior to trying the problematic exercises (squat/lunge for me) to hopefully be able to then have space to train better mechanics? Or is stretching before the exercise a bad idea?

I did the hamstring stretch on both sides. I also had a left knee injury over 10 years ago where I needed physical therapy. But they never had me do this particular stretch for the hamstring. After doing it a couple times just now at 30-60 seconds hold, it seems looser and more relaxed so I don't limp at all now! I will keep up this stretch daily and will maybe be able to walk more often and stand longer without having immobility due to knee pain the next day like I have been getting with standing for long periods of time. Thanks, Matt!

Thank you so much for making this video. I tried for a little while to find what the pain behind my knee was and you were the only person I found who diagnosed the problem and explained the problem, showing an easy and very realistic way of dealing with it. I am not fully fixed yet but since following your stretches and advice I've definitely felt the difference.

Got sharp outer knee pain while squatting. Pain transfered on daily life (walking, sitting, knee banding) for 6months. 99% tips from internet points you to IT band syndrom, miniscus tear, ligaments problems, but not biceps femoris. Did MRT - showed nothing. Then did self research on what muscles and ligaments attached to outer portion of the knee and tried stretch/test one by one. And it was tight biceps femoris, probably because of prolonged sitting. Now I am doing roller massage + stretches after/before sleep and before workout. It entirely removes pain for 1-2 hours I can squat/deadlift/etc and slightly day by day reduces pain it in general. After 2 months of healing almost no pain

I'm glad I found this video. I've had this issue for as long as I can remember in my left leg which has prevented me from doing any squats below parallel, not because it hurt but because I was scared it would aggravate something. I went to several doctors and physical therapists back in 2007/8 and there was only one case study in the literature and pretty much everyone suggested surgery. I recently got back into calisthenics and I'm really glad I decided to search this up again.

This stretch has changed my life! I do a lot of sitting from work, sim racing as a hobby, as well as bowling. I've always had really tight biceps femoris and other leg muscles from Osgood-Schlatter syndrome, and only recently strained my lower hamstring during a session bowling. Maybe I should have listened to the doctor more when they said to use a rope to stretch every day. An ounce of prevention would have been worth many pounds of cure! Thanks for the guided instruction and I love the acronyms.

Going to do this stretch for a couple weeks along with my workouts and see what results. This video might be a life saver for me.

Oof. I’m only at 8:17 right now but I’m getting angry. I injured my leg 7 months ago and have barely been able to walk since. Doctors have refused to give me any MRI on my leg and PT has failed for the last 3 months. I’ve regained some function of my leg, and I’m getting better but I’ve felt I’ve plateaued. I have extreme issue getting my muscles to relax when they are under load while at max stretch- think standing with my injured leg straight. Now last week I lost my job and my insurance. So 7 months after my injury, some random guy on KZread is actually teaching me things that sounds like exactly what I need. THANK YOU SO MUCH. I’m following this channel and I’ll scream your name from the mountain tops.

This is a life saver. Thank you. I had this problem and did not know what is was. My right knee (back and lateral) gets pain sponteneously (not all the time, but once in a while) when bend at a certain angle. I researched the net for a few years and could not find the exact solution. I researched and thought it was a 1) menicus tear; Or 2) Popliteus muscle strain; Or 3) IT band syndrome; or 4) the peroneal nerve rubbing against the Tib Fib. I tried all their exerceise and fixes and none of them worked. Until I found your video and stretch and rotate my torso as you described, it reliefs the pain and I am able to do a single right leg squat without much pain. THANK YOU so much.

leg end!.. i mean, legend. super informative and light hearted. i snapped tibia and fibula 20 years ago. but healed great. then I fractured my spine about 2 years ago. when I started moving again my knee started hurting. I thought it was that old injury resurfacing, stemming from piraneus longus. but this video and others are bang on. i guess my legs atrophied while stationary in bed for months and my incorrect movement patterns were highlighted.

I'm having a lot of trouble at the posterolateral aspect of my lower thigh, knee, and lower leg. Strongly suspect it's my biceps femoris, its tendon, the peroneus muscle, and all of the fascia in the area. I think the stretches you talk about will help quite a bit over time, so thank you :)

Found something that really helps. Take a wider stance and put a circular resistance band around your legs just above your knee then squat with these on. It forces you to engage certain muscles that basically made my biceps femuris stop snapping. For context, mine would snap on every squat on both sides previously and had for years.

The sounds from that tendon reminds me often about the noise from a concrete crusher and I struggle to achieve 45 degrees flexion while I easily get 85 degrees on my right hamstring ! About couple weeks back I was doing a pigeon stretch and felt a pop.. at first I thought it was my knee but the only tender pain I have is by the fibula head and doing things like hamstring curls makes it tender. I’m fine squatting but still unsure if it’s knee or hamstring related.

1:14 I do agree. BUT I had some snapping on the inside of my knee. (I have had ACL and meniscus surgery) And after 3 years it built up some liquid sac thing that started getting worse, and was also swelling throughout the day. I didn`t know much about this liquid sac thing, went to the doctor, he drained the liquid with a needle, and injected some cortisone. And it fixed the problem. That was a year ago, and I ain`t got no problems now. With such a heavy surgery knee will never be 100% healthy. What I was not aware of tho was that stretching was also important. I was mainly doing leg press, deadlift, leg raise, leg curl, and calf raise. I thought I could muscle my way to a fix. But I should probably try stretching to. Now I have this Biceps Femoris pain after playing lots of volley, and I am gonna try the stretched in this video! Thanks!

Hey love the twist for more lateral stretch - would just comment that if dorsiflexion increases the 'hamstring stretch' then all you're increasing is sciatic nerve tension - hamstring length doesn't change with ankle position. Maybe myofacial tension if anything?

There is plenty of papers regarding this issue and yeah, if the issue starts due to exercises you might be right, but in a lot of cases there seems to be a physical issue that requires surgery. Annormal insertion, fibular head anomaly, partial tears of the tendon etc.

I can recreate that pop sitting down, feeling the rear left of my knee (on my left leg) and slowly lifting/straightening my leg. I'm wondering if it's likely that over the years of doing little exercise that my bones and joints have fallen out of alignment, and if so, should I avoid squats to prevent further damage?

I have this snapping hamstring problem right at the knee and have done this stretch many times before because of your old video. However, it doesn't affect stretch my biceps femoris. The stretch I feel is in my outer calf. In a different video by a different channel I saw them do it differently, where they bend the knee on a chair, then hinge back until it stretches, then externally rotated the hip, and then move the opposite shoulder towards the bent knee. This i feel stretching my biceps fermoris, but doesn't feel very safe. Like my knee is about to get tweaked if I don't do it super carefully. If somebody got any advice I would be very thankful. Have had this for as long as I can remember.

My bicep femoris snapped when I was sitting on my knees. I’m a dancer (in heels) and I was on my knees and then went to do an external rotation to bring my foot back under me to stand up and my tendon snapped, and it felt like the whole back part of that tendon popped out of place, and I had to push my knee straight down to lock it back in place.. if that makes sense.. and then I could walk and stuff but it was sore all then way up what feels like my IT band, and down into the top part of my calf. Ortho told me meniscus tear too, but it wasn’t knee, it was muscle/tendon, and MRI confirmed no meniscus tear. I’ve been rehabbing and doing deep stretching. I find when my quad is super tight, it pulls on my knee too. I can go as low as 30-45 degrees, and get into child’s pose, but when I sit up to sit on my knees, I can feel like it’s gonna pop, and when I go to lift up, it snaps out. It hurts but doesn’t..? And then the after affects hurt more. I stretch my FML and lateral quad and glutes as well, but I’m still not able to actually sit on my knees without the snapping happening. Could it be just time? It’s been 5 months exactly since the first injury, and it’s happened 3 times since. Sorry for the novel!

@@connorsiegelski7280 I’m still working through it. I’ve been strengthening my hamstrings while lengthening my quads. I find that when my quads are super tight, they’re shortened which then requires my hams to do more, and even though I thought I had strong hams, I was imbalanced. I’ve been doing focused back body training in my glutes and hams, but also dynamic stretching into static stretching daily. I also do have osteo arthritis and hamstring tendinopathy, so ensuring that my inflammation stays down helps. I also started teaching a spin class, and the bike has helped tremendously with my rehab. Im able to do low squats where Im balancing on my toes, and I can get into a child’s pose. Im also slowly reworking the knees when I sit on my feet, by using yoga blocks and working in stages. I was able to sit on my feet and get up a couple times, but then it went out again.. so I haven’t tried it since. I think a lot of it is fear. So slow and steady is the way to go. Sorry for the novel of a response!

I don't understand how exactly to do these and I feel different muscles rather than what you're showing. Also some exercises feel like they cause harm to the knees

Can this same stretch be done for medial hamstring snapping? But by turning the opposite direction.

Peace. I believe the major factor behind leg muscle tearing and joint injuries, is due to our standing and walking technique. Most people hit their ankle/heel on the ground (heel striking), instead of using that joint as the point of leverage that it is e.g. how we step when walking down stair cases, the athletic stance, or when we skip rope (forefoot technique). Forefoot standing and walking makes far more sense because it promotes muscle use instead of relying on our joints, joints which are not made to store and release energy like muscles are. I have videos on this topic that may interest you a lot

@ryanh4533 honestly nope still there but not as bothersome. been like 3 years with it. HOWEVER... don't stretch . for the longest time i was stretching and making it worse. i stopped stretching and just focus on strengthening. it'll be better. still snaps but stretching will make it way worse. maybe your case is different but that's what I suggest

Only stretch muscles if they are not injured. If tou have strain - you can’t stretch the muscle! It’s going to damage it even more.

I am 62 years old and had been doing squats and stationary bike thr last year… i have no acl from years ago and my knee is not in best shape… then weirdly developed ‘snapping ‘ on lateral knee when in open chain ( like climbing a stile) . Knee would spasm and pseudo lock. Never diagnosed then tore my medial meniscus.. 🙄 … mri showed no lateral damage but there was pain there… with weak hamstrings and watching this vid im absolutely convinced it is the biceps femoris causing the issue. I am really happy to have found this vid and many thanks for making it! Atb vee

Hey, thank you for sharing this video and the stretches. It is very hard to find helpful information and exercises about this online. Most of the cases I have found online are solved by surgery. I have been doing the stretch and while it does offer temporary relief, as soon as I engage in physical activity it tightens again and starts snapping. Do you have any other resources or ideas on how to fix it? I am really out of ideas.
