A great week of hunting with Rick as we work at getting him a old Red Stag. Good company, good scenery and good camp tucker. Enjoy!!

Hey thanks mate. Appreciate the support 👍😁
MM77 Approved 👍🏼👍🏼…………………………….You live in a beautiful part of the world. If I was in the woods and heard one of those stags bellow, I think it would scare the devil out of me! I’ve heard deer snort and grunt but THAT sound so…………………….other worldly! ( the only way I could think of to describe it, LOL! )

Yes we are lucky. The Red stags certainly have a unique sound that’s for sure. Can certainly be intimidating. Cheers.👍
You're a blessed man to get to hunt some of that station country!! Did you grow up on a station?? I've hunted a good portion of the public land in south marlborough. Great country!! Enjoy your hunting! Keep it up.

Hi, yes very lucky. Grew up on the property featuring in this video. I love hunting public land too, and Marlborough has some great country. You probably recognise some of the country in these vids. Thanks mate 👍😁
Bloody good video mate what buzz that stag coming in close awesome hunt, you have one hell of a roar in yah what do you use as a roar Horn

Hey mate hope all is well. Yeah hell of a buzz alright. The roaring horn I use is some sort of plastic, called a “trophy “. It was one of the first ones they made and is slightly thinner in the plastic than the newer ones. Bit easier to get the sound variation in my one I reckon. The old school cow horns are pretty bloody good if the are large enough. Anything that’s works though right. Cheers for tuning in 🤙🤙
nice brothers

Another quality vid mate. Honesty call - were you wondering if Rick was going to pull the trigger?? I know it was only a few seconds from when the Stag stopped & looked up but they seemed to be a long few seconds lol. Cheers Bro.

Ha its funny how it can be that way in those situations. But he did a really good job under a bit of pressure. Lined it up, paused and made it count. Perfect shot really. 👍😁
G’day from Canada,( ottawa River valley, precisely). I don’t get to normally do any serious amount of long range shooting here in the Eastern forests. However ,recently retired and have moved to a location where I need to be able to do more spotting at longish distances. My vision is still above average so good binoculars have worked fine for years. I would like to get a spotting scope So I can setup on my truck window for spying across and down long crop fields. Would you be able to supply specifics on magnification and any other dimensions for a spotting scope? Thanks for video’s , it’s really interesting to see different types of hunting.

Hi Peter, There are a few points to consider when purchasing a spotting scope. First is budget, as you can easily pay $2000 plus on quality glass. Here in NZ it’s more like $3500 plus you still need a tripod. That being said there are more affordable brands out there. I personally like the Swarovski and Leica but Zeiss also has a good name. Leupold has some nice options that are slightly more affordable. Their value for money is good. Iv also been impressed with some of the new glass in the Bushnell range. Second is the style of the eyepiece. Do you prefer angled or straight? You will find it easier to find your target with a straight eyepiece however depending on your usual glassing position it’s often more forgiving to have an angled one. Weight and how compact the unit is will generally come down to how much magnification you need. It sounds like you are spotting from the truck so this may not be a major concern. Another important consideration is are you planning on taking videos/ photos though it. I personally would recommend getting a phone attachment for it eg a “PhoneSkope” or something similar to get the best out of it. They have adapters for all main brands and makes of phones. It’s a lot easier having the screen to look at and also add more zoom if needed. If weight and bulk is no concern more magnification is generally better. However if you’re going to take photos though it sometimes having the low magnification is helpful for closer encounters. If weight is a concern the new Swarovski 17-40x56 is a great little unit. Generally you can have good results 600 yards and closer with a 40x magnification. This is assuming your assessing the animal. If you’re just wanting to locate animals 40x will get you a good mile or so. If you’re trying to assess animals out at 1000 yards I’d go for a 65x. You can get ones that go to 80x but they are a very big unit, perfect for truck hunting vast areas though. Hope this helps. Any more questions please feel free to ask and I’ll try answer them as best I can. If you are just assessing animals and not using it to spot with, a high zoom camera is also a good option, more compact and a bit cheaper too. Thanks 👍👍
What pill was he using in the PRC? 😎👍

Hi Tony, He was using factory Hornady match ammo. 147 gr ELD- M. Not the perfect close range bullet, but the 6.5s are quite forgiving with a high sectional density. It did huge internal damage but didn’t exit. This is typical of soft projectiles up close. Something to be mindful of, as it’s a possibility in some situations that it may over expand and not penetrate enough so shot placement is key. In this situation it’s best to avoid the larger bones eg shoulder joint etc if possible, however usually I would prefer to hit bone and put them straight down using a harder projectile. This of course is all close range problems and I personally think they are the best projectiles for 250 yards and further where the velocity has dropped a bit. For longer shots it’s back to aiming for the main shoulder as velocity has dropped so no risk of over expansion and under penetration. Thanks for watching 👍😁

@@controlledrecoil-nzhunting Yeah I use 140amax for the longer shots and the factory Norma 143gn bondstrikes for anything under 200 for that reason in my PRC
