Quick comparison of 2018, 2021, and 2024 iPad Pro displays

Ғылым және технология

A quick and un-scientific comparison between the displays on the 2018 iPad Pro, 2021 M1 iPad Pro (mini-LED), and the 2024 M4 iPad Pro (tandem OLED).

You can’t accurately show HDR on an SDR video. That is like trying to show color on a black and white display.

This is true. Oddly enough, you can still see subtle differences between the screens, that’s not necessarily attributed to their effective resolutions. I’ve seen the M1 Pro mini LED next to the new tandem OLED M4 ipad and to be honest, I have a hard time telling the difference. Where there is a difference that becomes more obvious is bright white elements on a black background.

Can you help pick and iPad I’m gonna both are refurbished gen 3 12.9 for €350 512gb or gen 5 1TB for €900 I’ll only be using it for movies tv and music etc

5th gen iPad Pro 12.9" is the M1. The screen is fine on that. Gen 3 may have lesser battery life and the screen isn't as good. Still perfectly fine for watching movies and listening to music. M1 is more futureproof with regards to iPadOS updates, but it is €550 more expensive. Only you can decide which works best for you. Good luck!

The 2021 13-inch iPad Pro has a better screen, more cameras in back, but it has an M1 processor. If you had a choice over the M2 iPad Pro (2022 model year) compared to the M1 iPad Pro, I would go for the M2. No one knows how long iPadOS will support the M1. Hopefully a long time, but the M2 will be more future proof.

The Mini-LED or OLED models are better displays, but it's not like the 2018 was terrible.

Hi man, I had a test in Apple Store with my 2018 iPad Pro 11” and the new 2024 oled iPad Pro 11” and I can tell you there’s no such a big difference as in your video. They’re very close and, for some reason, I prefer colors on the 2018 model: they’re more natural.

I had to use Color Filters in Accessibility to get my colors to look similar (shown in my blog post not the video). Night Mode and True Tone turned off. Maybe I just used the 2018 iPad Pro too much over the years and the LED turned yellow.

If I wasn't a developer, I don't think I would have upgraded to the M1 model 3 years ago. The M4 is a significant upgrade, but it's by no means an absolutely must have upgrade over the 2018 iPad Pro model.

@@AdamTowhow are developers faring with new silicon? There's not a single app that doesn't charge premium subscription for the use. Apple has nothing except the XCode to be able to run.

@@AdamTow I mean how developers can take advantage of the new chip or old one? Except XCode development, nothing is possible on the iPads. Maybe a simple Javascript or terminal to remote in some servers also need third party apps that require month long subscriptions.

@@manoharmeka999 The question of what the iPad can do, what Apple allows iPadOS to do, and how apps are sold are orthogonal. We'll know more after WWDC24 if there are special use cases for the M4 chip and how much more Apple opens up iPadOS. Developers have to make a living and subscription pricing is one way they can get income on an ongoing basis, which helps with income/expense forecasting.
