I'm really not surprised he died, I'm pretty sure they killed him, too. Could you imagine the international shitstorm if they allowed a prisoner of one of their labor camps out of the country to talk about their experiences?

that's true. darn it, they didnt' want the outsider to know or hear about it then don't sentence him... or just give him a death sentence, no difference :( poor guy

They probably thought if they let him go that he'd tell other tourists who would try to do the same thing, they probably wanted to make an example out of him. If they sentenced him to death openly, then other countries (Especially the US, since that's where he's from) would start trying to get him out. Kim would rather have him die under mysterious circumstances then to have the UN/US start berating them for sentencing a collage kid who stole a poster to death. If they killed him, they'll never admit it. And since nobody has real proof that they did kill him, they can sit back and deny it for as long as they need.

I've never commented on a video before but public opinion has gotten so out of hand with this story. I agree that he didn't make a smart decision with regards to going to North Korea however I cannot understand why most people seem to accept that the charges brought against him were true. After looking at the video that is supposed to represent the evidence I am appalled at public opinion on this matter. The video is extremely blurry and nothing can be ascertained by it. Frankly it looks more like an Asian than a Caucasian person in the video and it looks as if the image was purposefully distorted. Apparently, people will believe anything that the media dishes out.

And even if it WAS him, they charged him with 15 YEARS of prison and sent him back disabled in A COMA. How are people not APALLED at this story like I am, but rather they're commenting shit like "respect the laws in a foreign country" etc. Those animals clearly did that on purpouse so America would fight back and while I would have LOVED for justice to have been served on them, I understand why they didn't, but America should NOT be friendly with that country anymore. Jan Reynolds color me surprised that all you can do is resort to name calling. However your opinion does not make my statement any less true. Trump already made a decision that resulted in the death of a us marine who's father refused to meet with trump because of his disgust with his decision making. This is not my opinion. This happened. Trump then went on to use the marine's surviving widow for his own political gain. I'm sorry you disagree, but I am basing my opinion on what I have seen come out of trumps mouth. I would describe his responses as robotic, formulaic, self serving, and insincere.

Actually he did everything to deserve the punishment. Everyone knows that in NK, you insult of deface the govt, you will be sent to jail forever, and it matters nothing if you personally don't agree. Those are the laws in NK. Same as death penalty in Indonsia for smuggling drugs. It doesn't matter if you say pot is harmless or that heroin for personal use is harmless. You get caught, you get death. If he wanted to deface a political poster in a hotel, he could have gone to 122 OTHER countries to do so. I think he means to take souvenirs on purpose to show off to his friends back home. He was an idiot and it doesn't matter one bit of you personally think the punishment is harsh. USAhas life sentences for pot possession. You get caught in some states, you get life. PEople know the law, they chose to break it.

This just pains me so deeply. Somehow I keep ending up back on one of the videos covering this story. If this hurts this much, I can't imagine how much his loved ones hurt. I wish this world was a way better place. We are all called human beings, yet so many people exist who can get away with murder and inflicting the worst sort of pain on others. I pray to God if there is a God that I reincarnate on a better planet. I pray that the ghosts of those who have been tortured and violated are able to feel truly free, and move on in peace to a way better place.

I’m so sorry that his life was cut short. When I was on active duty (19 year old first time away from home) we would get a briefing on arrival on custom and curtesy of the country we visited. On base we were on American soil, abide by American laws. Off base (during time of peace, not on duty, ie your free time) you were expected to follow the laws of the country that you were in. They made sure to warn us of foreign prisons and how that we would be found guilty because they see it as we didn’t have to be there. So if you got into a car accident, it was automatically 10% your fault regardless. That said I spend most of my time on the base. I went on tours, went to the beach, and the clubs off the base but I stayed with my fellow Marines. We kept each other in line. We looked out for each other. This poor kid was alone with strangers. At least a friend would have looked out better for him. So sad. RIP

Unfortunately, we Americans are raised to be confident, assertive, curious, industrious, competitive, adventurous. They are all admirable traits. What I never hear said, however, is that with freedom comes “responsibility”. There is a mindset in well-to-do families which encourages travel to anyplace off the beaten track. They want to have pictures of unusual places they’ve visited, but those places have their own rules (i.e. no due process). This world is not a primrose path, and ,sadly, curiosity killed the cat. A very sad lesson for all foreigners to NK. I lost my 35 yr old son this year. I know what his parents endure.

Don’t go into other countries and break their laws. Furthermore where is the proof that he was tortured in any way or form? You mean the Washington Post article that quoted an anonymous official that never resurfaced with his claims again ? Parents refused an autopsy. Why? If you suspect torture to be the cause of your sons death. No matter how much it tears you apart to have your sons body cut open -if you want a opportunity for the truth -you have to do it. Chances are nothing will be revealed through an autopsy but chances are also that they’might get to the truth. The US Coroner ( who was only allowed a simple physical exam of the deceased but not an autopsy) couldn’t find any signs of torture. She actually said that her hearts goes out to the grieving parents but she didnt t find any injuries and has to look at the science. The cause of death is listed as undetermined. His previously great teeth were not broken they were misaligned because of the brain damage he suffered. North Korea has his brain scans from the first day he arrived at their hospital and continued taking them during the rest of his stay. They said the day Otto arrived at their hospital, ( which was one day after his sentencing ) he was unresponsive, not breathing. The hospital staff had to perform CPR, put him on a ventilator etc... and don’t know what caused his condition/brain damage, at least that’s what they are saying. You do not get the kind of brain damage Otto had from being beaten which is usually more asymmetrical than in his case symmetrical. Furthermore there are no signs of any trauma to the head. Most plausible cause is lack of oxygen. Some say attempted suicide due to the time he was taken into the hospital ( as mentioned right after his sentencing) and the lack of any sign of torture in the videos, scans of his brain and statement of the coroner in the US and the condition he arrived in. Otto was bedridden for over a year and had not one single area on his body with skin damage. He was well nourished weighing 160lbs and no, you do not have that weight with just a feeding tube. It takes many many doctors, specialists, therapists, nurses to keep him in the stable condition he was in. Everyone remember he died in the US. In the care of US doctors. Otto developed a fever after arriving in the US. His parents decided to stop all forms of intervention and let his pass in peace. The North Koreans kept him alive for more than a year. We could barely keep him alive for a week. Not to sound cold but does anyone’s know how much the North Koreans spend on his 24/7 care and team of medical professionals? Last time North Koreans tortured any Americans was 1968. They slapped sailors of the U.S.S. Pueblo around and the US screamed bloody murder. Kinda twisted what Americans see as torture when used against our own but house the biggest Torture Factory of the World, Guantanamo. Since then though, not one case of any American, especially a white American that had any credible evidence of any physical torture. Confirmed and often repeated by Senior North Korean analysts, by defectors even the CIA itself. Psychological torture though seems to be very common and a favorite tool to press out confessions. North Korea is brutal but not stupid. Why would they damage their pawns? They know sooner or later they will have to return them. They know the world is watching them. They are well aware of the negative news. The same people that believe the Leader of North Korea had his brother in law tied to a missile and send him straight to his maker - by the way the brother in law was convicted and subsequently executed for treason after getting caught selling gold to China - also believe that Otto Warmbier died as a result of torture. However there are crazier things happending in the world. Until the truth is known we all have to choose sides. I just hope Otto Warmbier is happy and content wherever he is now.

This is a ridiculous comment. Otto committed no crime, his trial in the Kangaroo Court that is NK’s justice system was a joke. Who cares about how much money this communist country spent on his so called “care.” “Care” (you mean “abuse”) after they destroyed him physically/mentally…whatever it is these torturers did to him. You should be ashamed of yourself spewing talk about “care.” He should have never been detained in the first place. You’re a flipping disgrace by saying they kept him alive all during captivity and we could only do so for a short time. This is a demented post and makes me want to throw up. The only mistake Otto made was going to NK In the first place. Disgusting communist, brutal country. Stay far away from NK you all. The US was unable to save Otto, as was God. May he rest in peace without all these disgusting concepts in this truly gross post. You want to defend NK so bad, take yourself over there and then post your support of them. I think you won’t ever.

His heart stopped and was restarted either shocked, or naturally restarted whilst he was still in North Korea, that was clear from the full statement the American doctor gave, he also had a big scar that the parents reported the coroner said must've been an open wound for weeks!.. So hearing that makes me wonder if they took the torture too far, panicked and tried to bring poor Otto back to life.. Either way he was clearly tortured. Please people don't take the risk of holidaying in such a dangerous country, you’re holiday could end like Ottos and you're cash is paying for they're nukes ‼️... Please don't go there.

I believe it could be for any number of reasons. First, it could simply be because he was tortured to death. I won't go into specifics, but truly terrible, unimaginable, horrors were perpetrated on him. He was subjected to physical, mental, emotional, and psychological torture, pure and simple. If the state department knew all that, they could have simply said "its not in your best interest to seek out details, you don't want to know them". Second, it's also possible that his actual death came from a sympathetic American hand; and here's what I mean by that: When this young man arrived home he was relatively healthy as far as his body supporting continued life. He had extensive "brain damage" but as far as I know he wasn't in critical condition. I believe that it's possible that once seeing the mental state he was in, his family along with some form of medical professionals decided that it would be best to simply end his life for the sake of humanely ending his misery. Keep in mind, I don't mean being taken off life support. While similar, that implies that it's passive, aka they aren't killing the person, they are just not continuing to prevent his body from dying. This situation would not be passive. They most likely lethally injected him, not dissimilar to how convicts are executed. While that may sound barbaric, I also believe it was the most humane option. Rather than trying to scavenge some form of a livable life, or keep him in a medically induced coma for the rest of his natural life, they simply chose to end his suffering. That boy was dead long long before he ever went back to America anyway.

I'm really surprised to say the least how many people here are just focused on blaming this kid and say he deserved it (he's dead now). Such a sentence and the certainty that he was tortured can't be justified bc someone didn't respect the rules in another country by stealing a poster. Was he dumb for doing that? Sure, 100%. But I can't understand that people's reaction to this case is talking about how Americans don't respect laws and rules in other countries (what I'm not denying). That's the thing you take issue with regarding this story??!?

IKR??? Is scary that they focus more on how he was wrong for commiting a crime instead of focusing on how messed up the law is there! Sure, let's not do stupid things and go to messed up places, but the focus shouldn't even be on that much if at all when something much more serious is happening. Many people here have less empathy than Kim Jon Un it seems.. Also, I believe this was pretty much a trap anyway, just a reason to hate americans, just like these commentors are doing.
