Doctors describe Otto Warmbier's "severe neurological injury"

U.S. student Otto Warmbier returned home from North Korean custody suffering from "severe neurological injury," doctors say. They described his medical state as "unresponsive wakefulness." Senior fellow at the Asia Society's Center on U.S.-China Relations and Foreign Policy magazine contributor Isaac Stone Fish joins CBSN to discuss the latest.

    Them releasing Otto had nothing to do with Rodman arriving, they sent him home because they didn't want him dieing on their soil. And to say there was no evidence of torture is a crock as well, he had a huge scar on his foot and his parents said his bottom teeth look like they had been rearranged with a pair of pliers, he was tortured and deprived of oxygen, that's the only way that injury happens.

  • @jude999

    This story breaks my heart. Its obvious why they finally released him. They knew he wasn't going to recover so they didn't want to foot the bill even though it was their doing. We cannot imagine what treatments NK does to their detainees other than the script they are ordered to say on camera. My heart breaks for his family not knowing that their child has been in a coma for a year. Americans should never travel to this evil country not only for their safety but for your family's well being. Now, we have to get the other Americans released and back home.

  • @petrasmiles1029

    @petrasmiles1029

    4 жыл бұрын

    The list of all American detainees is constantly updated, there were none after the last 3 released so Im not sure what you mean by others. As of now we have no evidence from any detained foreign citizens ( white/ foreign) who have been released that there were tortured. None has been killed and all of them described being kept in a hotel that could be described as normal standard. None of them was sharing it and none of them was mistreated physically, abused or malnurited. They were though indeed going through emotional abuse- interrogations, being told families forgot them, not being able to contact anyone, isolation etc. However none was at work camps, or in bad conditions. The only prisoners who are in those conditions have been recorded to be Koreans ( of no Western nationality). Otto case is met with mixed opinions by experts because if for years not even one foreign prisoner has been physucally abused why would they do it to this one. Other thing is that he was kept in times when Trump became president and in those times detaines are usually released/ being negotiated to show good will or as bargain power. Hurting Otto was complete against NK interest. The doctor who examined Otto confirmed that physically ( apart from obvious damage) he was in excellent condition. Having a person for over a year in bed without one sore or skin problems suggest a person has round the clock care. This is extremely rare even in best Western hospitals. Same was about his nutrition and other functions. None of the doctors could also say what was the cause of his condition. Post mortem could have revealed it but parents disagreed. We know there was no signs of any physical trauma to any part of the body especially head. The negotiators who worked on behalf of family were shocked NK insiders at certain point cut all the contact for long. The only logical explanation is that there was pressure to try to get Otto to shape. However as this was not possible , they decided to release him. After 1 week in US his condition deteriorated dramatically. of course we don't know for sure. It might be he was forced to take pills and overdose etc. however, in those cases you need to think what is likely based on previous occurance and interest of NK. Otto would have been the first tortured foreign prisoner and in times where it made no sense for NK. If they wanted to turture him to get something in return , then they would have send info eg Otto is in labour camp ( we know he hasn't) or tortured. Definitely not being treated for a year with 24/7 care and insane medical bill without anyones knowledge. Im sorry but it doesn't add up.

    There are stupid "thrill seeking" tours available, organised in cooperation with DPRK's government and some guides in China. I actually know someone personally who used the same tour company as Otto, "Young Pioneer Tours", to visit North Korea about 2.5 years ago. I can see why an early 20s college guy with money to burn would decide to go there. It's something to brag about, especially in this age of social media flaunting and the need to constantly outdo each other. What could be more crazy and ridiculous than a trip to North Korea of all places, right? I feel sorry for the guy, I do. But he went into this rather naively. My friend who visited is from Russia, so of course I don't think the DPRK would mess with a Russian citizen considering Russia is one of their few allies. But Americans and other westerners? They *really* need to think long and hard before they book a trip there. It is a game of chance whether or not they'll arrest you as a bargaining chip, and then you're stuck there.

If anyone thinks this was some kind of good will gesture let me just say Kim has no good will towards our country. Good Will would have been sending Otto home being a whole young man, to able to walk, talk, embrace his family!

    It's terrifying to know that's the way the governments get to know how to manage the population. North Korea did it now with a young man, taking his recklessness as an excuse to taking away his freedom and for sure doing certain tortures to him; who knows how many people had suffered the same by their hands. The U.S did same, and long the USSR too, and so on with many other civilizations. So sad and horrible that it's something that seems to continue non stop in human history.

    I don’t think he went to prison without a fight, much like a caged animal overcome with fear and adrenaline, knowing that he would be imprisoned as an innocent pawn for the Kim regime. Anyone’s worst nightmare. He could’ve gone into shock, and experienced utter despair at the moment of the false guilty verdict or when they began to lead him away to his undeserved imprisonment. Maybe it was the false promise of being let go if he agreed to the staged , televised, confession. perhaps they had to tranquilize as the result of an emotional outburst , and in the idiocy of the guards, they over did the sedation. This put him in a brain dead state. They declared he was in a coma only one day after the trial. Otto did not deserve this. Kim Jong un and his regime cannot be trusted under any circumstances. This is just my speculation

    In the video which they used as evidence against him the guy stealing the poster was so dressed up in a disguising suit, it's impossible to know for certain that it was actually Otto. The story for ' why ' he did it was linked to a lady in an church in the US wanting a propaganda poster. But his family are unaware of any links to any church. It's such s bizzare thing for someone to go to such extreme lengths to do ...the story sounded so improbable. Korean hostility against America , known as a Christian nation , was probably what this was about. It's so sad.

    So it turns out that he wasn't in a coma, he was in a vegetative state and the "life support" the parents took him off of was just fluids and nutrition. He wasn't dying when they released him. He just wasn't improving. I think they kept him in North Korea for so long because they were hoping he would recover, because some with brain injuries do improve or recover if you give the brain enough time to heal. He got home, and his parents decided to let him die of starvation.

    What if? They made him say the confession repetitively even after the one they sent in, what we see in the video is literally what they forced him to do overs and over again, no sleep only corn and salt diet. The scar on his foot repetitive times if being drug along the floor, brain loss from lack of oxygen explained by a frantic speech pattern with little breathes in between trying to say what he was promised would be what gets him out of his situation. Only reason for no apparent physical harm is only because he willingly did it all maybe they gave him a drug that cause him to not sleep and he thought the 15 months were all the same 15 minutes of recording delirious enough in the 76th hour of no sleep to forget. Vocal cords probably were torn to shreds from use he could only make strange sounds.. maybe.
