Queens of England

Please consider supporting me at / lindsayholiday and help me make more fascinating videos!
Of the 66 monarchs who have ruled over England since the Norman conquest only 8 have been Queens. These women have had to fight to gain and hold power. Through most of English history men outranked women in the line of succession so the only way for a woman to inherit the throne was if she had no living brothers. The wives of Kings, while called Queens are not monarchs in their own right and are referred to as Queen Consorts. Some of these female monarchs who were fortunate enough to occupy the throne were less than brilliant rulers. But some reigned with wisdom and justice proving a woman could do the job just as well as a man. Here are their stories...
Matilda (1141-1148)
Jane (1553)
Mary I (1553-1558)
Elizabeth II (1558-1603)
Mary II (1689-1694)
Anne (1702-1714)
Victoria (1837-1901)
Elizabeth II (1952-)

I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. However, if they left their marriage country, she had to do so with nothing other than the clothes on their backs. The personal effects she brought for her passed to her children or her husband's other heirs. She would have been given dower rights to her property, meaning that the principal is held in trust and profits are paid out to meet the widow's financial needs. At her death, the properties revert to her husband's estate for passage to whomever was the husband's successor.

However, the Church of England was originally made by the personal feelings of Henry VIII, and I don't think the ground was solid. The achievement of Elizabeth I, who strengthened the foundation of the Church of England and left a Catholic element, is a great deal. 😌

Marriage didn't mean immediate sex or living together. That would wait for a few years until the underage spouse reached a suitable age, so probably when she was 15 or 16 and deemed old enough to start having children. Until then, the girl have her own living quarters and would be surrounded by people in charge of her upbringing, probably not even seeing much of her 'husband'.

On the contrary, Elizabeth had to "fight" for her legitimacy and even for her head ! Fun fact, Philip was instrumental in convincing his wife Mary I to leave the throne to her sister Elizabeth, rather than her cousin Mary Stewart and by extension the staunchly Catholic Valois monarchy of France, where Mary was Queen. Philip sent the Spanish Armarda decades later, not because Elizabeth said no to marriage, but because of English pirates raiding Spanish shipping. So entirely Elizabeth's fault.

I love the English/British Monarchy. I have memorized by heart all Monarchs from Alfred the Great to Elizabeth II. I wrote a children's book about Elizabeth Woodville - focusing on how she met and was chosen by Edward IV (I avoided the princes in the tower since it's a children's book). As a teacher, I like the idea of my girl students reading about powerful women. My goal is to write a series called "An Elizabeth Story" with a book about Queen Elizabeth, Consort of Henry VII, Elizabeth I, Elizabeth Stuart, The Winter Queen (whose daughter, Sophia of Hanover, was the gateway to the current Monarch), Princess Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of Charles I, Queen Elizabeth, Consort of George VI, and Elizabeth II. Each of these Elizabeths showed great strength and courage during their lifetime, and each has a compelling story to tell.

Christian Patriot absolutely correct, but my point was that Matilda and Jane never got to have coronations, but the lady in the video incorrectly states that they did. The coronation was a way of solidifying the monarch's position on the throne, a ceremony that connected them to God and effectively made them holy. If a monarch was uncrowned, they were still legally a monarch, but being crowned did help to solidify their position on the throne. It was effectively a marriage between the monarch and God.

Elizabeth II's namesake was not Elizabeth I. She was named after her own mother, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. Soon after her father passed away, she was asked what her regal name should be (as she was originally not meant to be Queen). She responded, "well, by my name of course. My name is Elizabeth". The fact that it was the same name as Elizabeth I is purely coincidental.

@Rashi Rosenzweig- You are absolutely right, of course. I'm always surprised that people aren't more informed about the life of the current Monarch. As you said, she wasn't born or raised to be the queen, and was named after her mother. Though it's not common today, many girl's were named after their mother during the 1800's and early 1900's. Another example of this was Queen Victoria naming her first child Victoria. That Victoria married the future German Kaiser and gave birth to Kaiser Wilhelm II.

Elizabeth II really just melts into the persona of being queen. Much of the segment about her was more about her son than herself. I watched a 6 episode documentary about the House of Windsor and even that focused more on her family than herself. She just truly personifies being the regal ruler of a nation. Now that she is old shes everyone's favorite grandma. Its impressive.
