LGBTQ Kings & Queen of England

Please consider supporting me at / lindsayholiday and help me make more fascinating videos!
In the history of the English monarchy their have been six kings and one queen who are believed to have been homosexual or bisexual. They defied the religious, homophobic times in which they lived and many paid dearly for it. They may have worn crowns and wielded power but at the end of the day they were human too. Here are their stories...
William II Rufus (1087 - 1100)
Richard I (1189-1199)
Edward II (1307-1327)
Richard II (1377-1400)
James I (1603 - 1625)
William III (1689-1702)
Anne (1702-1714)

I find it very interesting that king James was a homosexual while having the King James Bible written which added many passages against homosexual acts. The interpretation of the GREEK was not really the same when it talks about gay relationships, the passage that is most widely used to clobber gay men is the verse, a man shall not lie down with a man as he does with a woman. In the translation the Greeks used two different words for man, the GREEK words had many different meanings and the first word used for man was that of a man as we know it the second man used was actually the word for man child. The verse is really stating that a man (adult) should not lie down with a man (child) as he does with a woman. There is another passage which the Bible lists all the immoral acts that are sins and one of them is witten as homosexual but again the translation was misinterpreted as the word arsenekoitai was used and is found in no other GREEK texts than that which was written by Paul. The verse it is used in has three sets of three sins, each set of sins are similar to each other and the actual word arsenekoitai translates to a man who sells young boys for sexual slaves not a homosexual. The Bible as written in its original form doesn’t talk about homosexuality and there is no Hebrew word for it. All of the verses that claim homosexuality is a sin we’re added to the Bible in newer modern translations and put there by men who probably had latent homosexual tendencies and were projecting that which they hated about themselves into the sins that should be forbidden. The Bible as it was originally written forbade the acts of adults having sex with children and forcing children to do acts of sex which were not natural to them. God does not hate gays, he hates liars. If two people of the same sex love each other and they have sex together it is a natural act between them and God does not condemn love. In truth if you want to live the most puritanical life than you should either be chaste and remain a virgin never even masturbating or marry a man to a woman and never have sex unless it is to be in the act of bearing children. But that’s for the puritans. I’m certain God doesn’t forbid two people who love each other to express that love through sex and sex is a natural act, it’s just when it becomes unnatural and falls into lascivious acts of lust, forcing yourself on an unwilling partner or becoming addicted to sex as the Bible does say that anything done to excess is a sin. Having sex with another mans wife is a sin and vice versa. To be a follower of Christ you are to lay down your riches and follow his teachings feeding the poor and caring for orphans and widows, loving God with all your heart and soul and loving your brother even as you love yourself, the second being the most important. I’m gay and I’m a Christian and I have a very strong relationship with God and am saved by the grace of Jesus Christ through the spilling of his blood and resurrection from the dead. I don’t have a partner and live a humble life accepting that I am gay but not acting out in a way that would be considered an act of lust. I have all my needs met through my love of my savior. I. Not saying it’s what someone else should do, that is always between you and the God of your understanding to decide what is and what is not forbidden. We all know when we do something we shouldn’t.

You need to read the original Hebrew in Leviticus about homosexuality. There is only one word there used for a man and there is no way it could be interpreted to mean a child. However, nor does it say not to be homosexual. The verse merely proscribes anal intercourse between men.

Historian John Boswell states in his book, Christianity, Social Tolerance, and Homosexuality, that the references that seem to prohibit same-sex sex in the old testament are directed towards a few pagan practices in the region, namely "temple prostitutes" (a feature of ancient near eastern religions). A worshiper would sleep with the "temple prostitute" as a form of worship.

She was a child bride and he held total power over her, which he abused only to show favour to his lovers, even though the latter does not necessitate the former. Wouldn't you resent and rebel? Someone took The Favourite a little too seriously and thought it was a historical documentary, lol. Queen Anne actually deeply loved her husband, Prince George of Denmark and Norway, Duke of Cumberland. They were so deeply in love that Anne's courtiers thought it strange and "unmanly" that Prince George was perfectly content to sit back and let Anne rule all on her own. He never questioned her policies or embarrassed her. He never demanded he be raised in his station above the queen. They wrote each other numerous love letters. Her constant miscarriages had them mourning together. Yes, Prince George was an an alcoholic. But pretty much every wealthy person was due to the water at the time being of very poor quality and killing people due to cholera and other water-borne common diseases. So most rich folks drank liquor and wine and very little of water. George was never an abusive alcoholic towards any one, including his beloved wife. Now, Anne could have very well been bisexual. Especially considering her emotionally codependent relationship with Lady Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough and later, Abigail, Baroness Masham. But she was not driven to these women due to some phantom abusive relationship with her husband, Prince George.

Yes, Richard and Philip slept in the same bed. WITH A SWORD BETWEEN THEM. It was done as a way to symbolize their alliance. 4. Despenser was not killed by the Lancasters. He was executed by Queen Isabella and Roger Mortimer. Lancaster was dead by that point. 5. John of Gaunt was not the only uncle trying to control things. There were also Lionel, Edmund, and Thomas. 6. Peasants and slaves are not the same thing. 7. Nobility wasn't the target. They wanted the Flemish merchants and royal advisers who were running the country into the ground. 8. You make it sound like those two reasons were why Richard II was hated. Did you miss the part where he insulted, stole from, and shunted aside everyone except his little clique? 9. WOAH WOAH WOAH You went from de Vere's death to Richard's WAY TOO FAST! The theory of Edward II and the poker is seen largely as a myth. The custodians of Berkeley Castle, scene of the murder, now disown the story as no evidence has ever come to light. The first mention was three hundred years later by Christopher Marlowe a gay playwright. I would say Richard II was absolutist, moody and vain but probably not gay. His father, Edward the Black Prince, had pre-deceased him and as a boy had to hit the ground running with scheming courtiers in profusion. He had an altarpiece the Wilton Dyptych made, the Christ Child the Virgin Mary and Angels wearing his badge. He was pretty sure of himself to do that. He is also supposed to be the person who invented the handkerchief.

Before the conclave that elected Pope John X111 when the cardinals were preparing in Rome and receiving well wishes support, one Bishop turned up at a gathering of supporters for Cardinal Roncalli attired in magnificent episcopal vestment which upstaged all the others including Cardinal Roncalli. When the Bishop went forward to give him the kiss of peace greetings Roncalli whispered "If I am elected Pope, you can forget any hopes of receiving a red hat from me."

This is a very interesting video. Thank you for uploading it. You mentioned Edward II, and his love of Piers Gaveston. It so happens that Edward II is a character in the film "Braveheart," where he is a prince. When the old King sees the prince with his boyfriend, the king throws the boyfriend out of the window in a moment of rage. The "She-wolf of France" is also a character in the film. There are inaccuracies in your video. For example, when James II was deposed, parliament wanted Mary to be Queen, because she was the true heir and British. However, William of Orange, who was a mere stadtholder in the Dutch republic, was determined to become King in his own right. Mary relented and let the King lead her. People thought that the new King William was trying to steal the crown from his wife's head. There is some evidence that Mary had crushes on girls as well. Queen Anne wasn't the first married Queen of England to rule alone. Mary I Tudor had married King Phillip of Spain, but ruled alone, in the mid-sixteenth century , because Phillip didn't much care for her. (He also had to take care of Spain, parts of the low countries, parts of Italy and the New World, so he was kept busy). The Act of Settlement was passed by parliament before Queen Anne acceded to the throne, not after. She was pregnant 19 times, not 17. Despite this, your video was very entertaining and interesting, and pointed out some interesting facts about Britain's and England's LGBT King's and Queens.

In fact, it was John Harvey’s 1948 book The Plantagenets that first introduced the question of Richard’s sexuality into English-language historiography. A number of historians have since accepted the premise while others are skeptical. Professor John Gillingham falls into the latter category. With several decades of writing about Richard under his belt, Gillingham’s bottom line is that the inferences regarding sexuality are speculative: “We simply do not know.”

Edward II didn't have a red hot poker shoved up his arse. It is most likely Edward was smothered. The story of him dying like that only came about 60 years after his death. His marriage to Isabella was even happy at times. Once, on a visit to his father-in-law, Philip IV of France, the King and Queen missed a meeting because they had both overslept (make of that what you will). I'm sure he was bi, Isabella had even helped prosecute Gaveston's executioners so... strange marriage I suppose.

Queen Anne was straight and loved her husband. She got pregnant 17 times. Many of them stillbirths; the rest, children who died shortly after being born. But that is a different story. Sarah Churchill was straight and loved her husband. She married him in secret, because both their families were against the match, and had a long and devoted relationship, always supporting each other. They had 7 children. The two ladies were best friends since childhood. Best friends, nothing more. That, until the queen grew tired of arguing with lady Sarah over politics. So, she found a new best friend in Lady Abigail Masham, who was kind, gentle, and subtle, and did NOT argue over politics. It was an enraged, fallen from favor Sarah the one to imply the queen was having a lesbian affair with Abigail, because the queen refused to be rid of her, but this was not true. The queen had lost 17 children, AND her husband in 1708. She often suffered from depression, she needed kindness and empathy. Sarah gave her none of that, but Abigail did. The Favourite IS NOT historically accurate. It barely got the names right.

These are excellent videos. Very well researched and beautifully presented. What I find ironic, is the number of 'haters' that there are indicated via the Thumbs Down feature. Of course, there are far more Thumbs Up, and deservedly so. You have to wonder what some of these people who give you the thumbs down are threatened by? It seems so petty and stupid of them, and probably is in the long run. I think we can probably correctly guess just what it is that those people are threatened by. At any rate, thanks for the excellent videos, Lindsay. They are extremely good.

You made a mistake. Robert got Normandy and Henry was to be content with a sum of money. Eventually William Rufus died in suspicious circumstances, and as a result Henry became King of England. Also Henry fought against his brother Robert and thus became Duke of Normandy as well. Unfortunately his son died in a boating accident, and that although Henry wanted his daughter Matilda to succeed him, his nephew Stephen became King. Thus started a vicious civil war between the supporters of Stephen and of Matilda. Eventually after many years of fighting, it was decided that Stephen would be succeeded by Matilda's son, who became Henry II, the first Plantagenant King.

So many conjectures presented as facts and outright false information here, it's hard to know where to start. Three very simple examples - 1. There is zero evidence that Richard I had an affair with Philip and quite a bit of evidence to the contrary. "A Lion in Winter" does not constitute a reliable source people. The "affair" was created for the sake of added drama. France and England hated each other, no jilted lover needed. 2. Edward II was probably smothered. The popular rumor that he was killed with a hot poker up the rectum started because the populace thought that would be a fitting death for a homosexual. He have affairs with men, but this video makes it sound like that is the reason his "favorites" were killed. If he had just slept with men, it would have been a scandal but probably stopped there. The unprecedented political power given to the favorites and their abuse of the nobles got them killed. 3. Anne was likely not homosexual. Sarah Churchill was Anne's closest friend, but, when Sarah was afraid she was losing influence with Anne, she blackmailed her the threat of the false rumor. Were there homosexual kings? Of course, and James I most definitely was one. One solid bit of history this video gets right. As for Richard II, he attempted to keep Henry (later Henry IV) from his inheritance and Henry led a revolt against him. Combine this with his unprecedented cruelty and you don't need to invent homosexuality where there was none to find the reason for a revolt. Edit: Somewhat less egregiously incorrect, but one does not need to be a member of the royal family to be made a duke. While it is most commonly bestowed upon members of the ruling family, the monarch may grant Letters Patent to anyone he or she chooses, thus bestowing a dutchy upon them and their (typically male) heirs.

I'm afraid I have to correct you on the royal succession. While the rules you quoted were in force for over 200 years, they were changed in 2015, when the Succession to the Crown Act 2013 came into force. It's now absolute primogeniture for royals born after 28th October 2011, so just the order of births regardless of gender, and people married to Roman Catholics are now eligible. The monarch themself must still be protestant though as they are the head of the Church of England.

I think being married to a Catholic was much more important when the monarch still had some actual power. You only have to look at the scheming parties behind Henry VIII's wives to realize how much influence people believed those guiding the queen could have over the king. Nowadays the idea that a Catholic spouse of a monarch could influence politics and the running of the country in a Catholic direction is obviously ridiculous.

@@floraposteschild4184 She did it on purpose to save face on being let go of her offices. She also wanted to get back at her cousin Abigail for supplanting her. Sarah was very much in love with her husband as Queen Anne was in love with her husband. This video needed much more research than looking them up on Wikipedia. This one did a disservice on Queen Anne as well as the others.

Also, although only one of Anne's children lived into childhood (to about age 8 or 9), she was pregnant about 12 or 13 times in her child-bearing life, the pregnancies all through her husband, a Danish prince, I think.

At the time, there was a saying that went "as queer as Richard Cromwell's hatband", meaning something flamboyant and alluding to his rumored unconventional private life. There's a theory that this is where the modern use of "queer" came from.
