Queen Anne and the Cunard Ship Naming Convention
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Cunard recently revealed the name of its highly-anticipated cruise Pinnacle Class cruise ship: Queen Anne. There has been much speculation about what the name of this new ship, which is scheduled to debut in early 2024. The popular speculation is indicative of the loyal following that the Cunard Line maintains to this day.
What do you think of Cunard's choice to name the ship Queen Anne? Do you like the Queen naming convention overall? And do you plan to sail aboard this new ship? Let us know in the comments below!

I would name the vessel Queen Charlotte. Queen Charlotte for obvious reasons... she as a patron of Arts and science, a amateur botanist and the assumed adopter of the Christmas Tree in England. Times have changed since the era of ocean liners. Shipe must move forward with us. Which is what people usually don't understand. Ships of the 1930's and even before that wouldn't be economical or efficient as times have changed so rapidly.

Uniquely in the current fleet, Queen Victoria follows both the "Queen" naming tradition and the -"ia" suffix tradition as well. Basically a sweet spot. But in general, there's been a Cunard Queen for around 90 years now, so it is a well established practice that deserves it's own respect.

@Kaidhicksii

That suite was what convinced me. :)
A naming convention that had the company’s name in it that worked was the Union-Castle Line, as their ships were named after locations, many of which have castles, and importantly, their names would still work without the “Castle” suffix. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union-Castle_Line Not like cruise ships, where the name would otherwise be very dull without the company name as a prefix.
Cunard has a responsibility to their history to use names in keeping with tradition and the “Queen” convention is a perfect example of this. So no surprise that “Queen Anne” has been chosen for the new ship, long may she reign !
Logically, Queen Anne was the only option, if you are going to follow tradition. There are 4 female monarchs of Great Britain, and Anne is the final one to be used, completing the set!
Honestly if the forward super structure looked a bit nicer I think I'd like this one a bit more.
the reason Queen Anne was chosen over Queen Charlotte is most likely due to the fact Anne was a queen regnant while Charlotte was a consort. The other three ships share their names with queen regnants.
@douglashenderson6191

Is it not the case that the original Queen Mary was in fact named after King George V's consort, Mary of Teck, rather than being named for the Tudor Queen Mary, who was indeed queen regnant? And that therefore the current QM2 must be named for the same queen consort?
Would be a very great video idea on why Cunard switched from the IA sufix on the names of their ships, to the "Queen" naming convention.

I love everything about this new ship and the Queen naming convention! GO CUNARD
While not the most pretty liner to look at, I think the name is a good choice it fits in with the rest of the Cunard fleet. I wonder what Queen is next for the Cunard fleet
I have anticipated that the name will be Queen Anne since late 2019 so I was happy that I was correct. Plus it fits with the other Cunard Queens.
If Cunard ever got into the river cruising industry, I'd imagine those ships might carry on the old -ia naming convention.

Queen Anne was the name I was practically expecting, but there were other potencial candidates like Queen Alexandra, Queen Berengaria, Queen Charlotte, and Queen Caroline. While I understand that most cruise lines and other maritime companies do their usual corporate naming of their ships for, obviously, brand recognition purposes and it definitely works for the general audience. Eg, your heard a ship named "Maersk Emma", you think of Maersk Lines the cargo shipping company. But my least favorable naming convention is naming them with numbers like the defuncted Renaissance Cruises did, eg, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7, and R8. But TUI Cruises takes the cake, they named their ships as Mein Schiff (My Ship) from 1 to 9 (this includes the three new-builds). I wish they change a better naming convention instead of numbers. But not all cruise lines do the typical corporate naming convention, eg, Royal Caribbean uses the "of the Seas" suffix instead of using their name, and Oceania Cruises doesn't use any prefix/suffix at all. Fred. Olsen Cruises names their ships starting with a "B" with no prefix/suffix. HAPAG Lloyd doesn't but has recently adapted the Hanseatic prefix on two new ships. P&O Australia uses the Pacific prefix, and P&O UK still keeps their traditions with no Prefix/suffix. Phoenix Reisen names their ships with an "A".
Love your channel, as a one-time passenger on the SS United States in the mid-1960s. Honestly, I didn't realize Cunard still operated cruise ships. Cruising doesn't appeal to me, I guess -- the naming convention makes perfect sense though, and fwiw I approve.

@@Pyrus425 Carnival got it wrong, assuming QE2 was Queen Elizabeth Two, they decided to call the new liner Queen Mary Two to match. If you get the chance watch HM naming the ship and you will see and hear the disdain in her voice when she says the 'Two'
Personally I think it was always the most obvious option, simply for the fact that it "works" and fits into the current naming convention. Sure a blast from the past would have been awesome, Aquitania was my favourite (even if this new vessel couldn't even dream of taking the title "the Ship Beautiful"!) Queen Anne is a great and very British name as it was Queen Anne who oversaw the union of the separate kingdoms of England and Scotland into the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707. She was also the last Monarch of the ancient Scottish Stuart Dynasty.
And I somehow missed this. I too was on the Queen Anne bandwagon. For me it was easily the prettiest name of them all (even if the ship herself isn't the prettiest thing ever but we'll get to that in a bit), and then there's the history behind it. Anne was one of only four names of queens who ruled over England and weren't just a Queen Consort. I think the Queen naming convention works perfectly for Cunard, and you explained why quite easily. I'm not the biggest fan of corporate naming conventions that we see on most cruise ships today and was absolutely not a fan of it with Cunard Princess and Countess. It just didn't fit them. It does have its cons, of course, which brings me to the ship herself. Allow me to quickly say that, while she's not the prettiest thing out there unfortunately, she is also by no means the ugliest. Norwegian Epic anyone? 🤣The fact remains that she's a cruise ship, and when Cunard first came up with the Queen name, it was only saved for their largest and grandest transatlantic superliners. The smaller ships would still use the "-ia" names. It would've been nice if they had stuck with that today and named the Queens Victoria, Elizabeth and Anne differently, using the "-ia" naming. However, those names also carry a ton of weight - perhaps even more so than the Queen names - in that they were borne by some of Cunard's greatest and most revolutionary liners. In my eyes, no ship in today's world is deserving of such names, which brings me to another option they could've gone with. Naming them Princesses. So, Princess Victoria, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Anne. Sure, there may be a bit of trouble with Princess Cruises on that matter, but they and Cunard are both owned by Carnival. I'm sure they could figure something out. Nonetheless, it is what it is, and I'm ultimately happy with the name that Cunard's 249th ship carries, as well as with Victoria and Elizabeth. I am quite certain that, when Cunard's 250th ship inevitably arrives, that she will be the long-awaited second transatlantic liner of this century. And I think she'll be coming sooner rather than later. :D
The same way that HAL ends with ....DAM, respect for old was and names
With a slight modification of the forward structure she’s a real nice looking ship, especially with the black hull and QE2 inspired funnel. I think the “ia” suffix will return eventually, especially if QM2 gets a sibling or for her replacement.
I like the name, very British as should be
Queen Anne if a great name. The new ships may be bigger, have more amenities and so on but nothing beats the look of a ocean liner with a long bow with a well deck and three to four funnels. Question: Why not build the ship in the UK??? Maybe time to bring some jobs back. Can't wait for the Queen Mary tours to open again, great place to spend the afternoon. Thanks for your great narration and to the point information...

They're not built in the UK because the owner of Cunard, Carnival Cruise Lines, is an international company based in America. The Cunard name is only really kept as a marketing device. There's nothing actually British about them.
i would love to see a Normandie style ship. It was the perfect blend of modern engineering / looks with the classic trans atlantic style appearance of the earth 20th century.
The Lusitania - Mauritania - Aquitania naming series makes sense too, since it provides a classy and unique sounding set of names while making it clear they are all part of the same company. For modern times, I think continuing the Queen series is the right choice since it's their existing convention instead of starting something new. The big exception is when you start running out of good names in the series (like the US aircraft carriers). For Cunard's next ship I would suggest Queen Charlotte.

Having been a Cunard nerd since the early 2000s, it seems like Queen Anne has always been shortlisted for the next ship in the diehard community. It was bandied around when QV was announced, and some people suggested that what became the new QE would have the name in deference to the just-barely-still-in-service QE2. (After QV was Victorian themed I remember a lot of jokes about 1700s-themed decor.) It was the name of the fourth forward suite on QM2, and a lesser-used name of one of the Sun/Signal deck forward duplexes (aft of the penthouses) on QE2. Always seemed like Mary/Elizabeth/Victoria/Anne were a grouping for Cunard, and Queen Anne is famous enough in the public mind.
It's good to see that there's gonna be another Cunard ship, but I wish they'd make another liner. Queen Anne is a practical name, as well, that's a good name. I wonder what the theoretical fifth ship will be called. Only six women have ruled England, with four names between them: Mary, Elizabeth, Anne, and Victoria. My guess is they would go to Scottish queens, or queen consorts. Or near-queens. Queen Jane and Queen Matilda, perhaps.
@Kaidhicksii
2 жыл бұрын
My guess is that they may name their fifth ship after whoever the future monarch of England is going to be. Catherine would be a good choice, although I've recently heard that the Queen announced that, when Prince Charles takes the throne, she'd want the queen to be Camilla. Now I don't know enough about British politics to get involved here, but from what I do know, people are probably not going to take well to that... :P
@TheHylianBatman

@@Kaidhicksii The next three monarchs are going to be males, assuming nobody abdicated or anything. That would kinda ruin the "Queen" streak. They could go the Queen Consort route, but I agree that Camilla would not be very popular should that happen. I agree, Catherine would be a good choice as well. I'm still fond of Matilda, though; one Matilda in particularly was nearly queen of England as the daughter of Henry I, but England put Stephen in charge instead. Matilda merely served as the link, as her son, Henry II, became king after Stephen. That was all the peace settlement she could get, but she was very close to the throne. So many other Matildas were queen consorts to so many kinds in the first couple hundred years of the kingdom. Camilla and Catherine are certainly more relevant these days, but I would say Matilda has more weight as a historical name.
Announced on the 8th of February 2022, actually.
I suggested Carpathia. Obviously they did not take my suggestion.
Queen Anne is a good name but Cunard now have a problem as they have used the names of all the recognised Queens regnant of the UK. The other options are really Matilda (daughter of Henry II and mother of Henry III who claimed the crown in her own right) and Jane (the 9 day wonder). So it is hard to see where they go from here.
The Cunard ocean liner Queens were all named after queens consort in stead of queens regnant, while the Cunard cruise ship Queens are all named after queens regnant. Mary of Teck for RMS Queen Mary and RMS Queen Mary 2, and Queens Elizabeth The Queen Mother for RMS Queen Elizabeth and SS/MS Queen Elizabeth 2, not Mary I & II or Elizabeth I & II.
It's just a shame it's not going to be able to be an Ocean Liner as well.

It is, but I've got a pretty good feeling that the 5th one - let's be honest: there will be a 5th Cunarder at some point - will be one. :)
I'm a traditionalist & miss the old -ia ending on Cunarders, however since these aren't liners, but cruisers maybe a new convention is the way to go. They could do a lot worse than Queen this or that.
Is anyone going to talk about queen Anne's revenge?
The current naming tradition seems to be all Queens Regnant. So no Queen Alexandra or Queen Adelaide (both Queens Consort) or Queen Charlotte (uncrowned Queen Consort). Of course this would mean Queen Mary was named after the daughter of James II, and original Queen Elizabeth named after the protestant daughter of Henry VIII (and not Consorts of Georges V and VI), presumably this leaves QE2 and current Queen Elizabeth being named after the current monarch.... just my tuppence worth!

That's exactly what Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth should've been. I made a post on Reddit about this a while ago: nobody said that those two had to be as big as QM2. They could still be the exact same size they are today but designed as liners. Apparently, the transatlantic market isn't able to sustain more than one transatlantic liner, in today's era of jets and cruise ships. Alright fine: I can still easily picture a scenario where all 3 Queens plus the soon to be fourth if she were also designed as a liner did the transatlantic crossings on different schedules. @@Kaidhicksii This was never "officially" released by Disney because it was still in the early planning stages but sometimes bedroom talk can yield secrets. And yes, a Disney transatlantic liner schedule can easily compete with the QM2 crossings based on the Disney Cruise Line experience alone which I prefer and is completely different than what Cunard offers as I have done both. I also prefer the casual dress code of DCL. Less to pack. And the entertainment is fantastic. Remember, in the UK, we have almost six weeks holiday mandated for everyone and the UK is a large segment for Disney so a seven+ night crossing does not take away from longer holidays. I have also recommended afternoon tea service on the crossings which DCL hadn't offered except for the children as a paid character experience on the cruises. The pier at Castaway Cay should be able to handle the deep hull of an ocean liner. As for the delayed Disney Wish, it's a lot of hype and cost-cutting with the removal of the midship lifts and also the elimination of the fully wrap-around Promenade Deck which was beloved by the RunDisney community. 3x=1 mile, 10x=5k. The lift situation on the Wish will be difficult with the current global distancing restrictions and will also be a burden for families travelling with small children and elderly parents and grandparents. People complained about how busy the midship lifts were and now they won't have any there to complain about! Thank Bob Paycheck for that.

Anne is...a terrible choice. It was too obvious and easy but most importantly, Cunard has NO history with this name. Cunard claims to honor it's traditions so a more fitting name would have been Berengaria. Need it to be a Queen? Fine...Queen Berengaria...wife of Richard the Lionheart. Berengaria was also a former flagship of the line. To name the ship Anne is nothing more than looking at a list of British Queens and deciding which name looked nice on the bow rather than actually honoring the line's history. Thumbs down from this ocean liner historian. 👎
