Quantum Computer Reality | Seth Lloyd
Ғылым және технология
Quantum computing is widely considered to be:
- The most potentially transformative technology of this century;
- Nothing but hope and hype.
A reliable reporter who is familiar with all of the rich variety of quantum research going on and the reality of the remarkable progress in the field (along with its still-expanding potential) is quantum pioneer Seth Lloyd, professor of mechanical engineering and physics at MIT.
Lloyd describes himself as a mechanic of quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum biology. He is director of MIT’s Center for Extreme Quantum Information Theory, which is working on breakthroughs in general-purpose optimization, vastly enhanced communication, and ultra-precise measurement. In his book Programming the Universe (2006) he proposes that the universe is a vast quantum computer that can eventually be completely understood through local-scale quantum computation.
"Quantum Computer Reality" was given on August 09, 02016 as part of Long Now's Seminar series. The series was started in 02003 to build a compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking from some of the world's leading thinkers. The Seminars take place in San Francisco and are curated and hosted by Stewart Brand. To follow the talks, you can:

Actually a very good overview of QC. Just skip 15 seconds anytime he starts to laughs, and 30-60 seconds anytime he starts telling a joke or a story.

@@jason1440 sure you do... so he laughs at his own jokes, which are cringe-worthy but its worth it all for Stewart's use of the term "one bodacious renaissance we are living through" right at the end.
Thank you I enjoyed it very much.
Was a fun conversation
How many times has this guy been to Little St. James Island?

Just a handful of times. It was strictly for philanthropical purposes though
Who made the quantum bits? Who programmed them?
The last 101.26 minutes feels like a stand-up comedy show.
how is the old duffer?
i loved it because the guy sees the problems of playing God with the data and he's not on board, which gives my own reality a bit of relief today. It's terrifying how the stated goal of so many is to merge man and machine! Humanity is at this moment being asked to choose God or Evil. I hope we choose well.
Nice
I gave up at the 30-minute mark because he’s going off on SO many tangents unrelated to the central subject that I found it frustrating to try and follow what he had to say on a topic I was hoping to learn more about.

Comedy is not your strong suit. Stick to the physics.
