After a lot of deliberation, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and try something a little different. As always, I had a hard time sleeping the night before my trip and I woke up around 3:30am. Instead of going back to sleep, I got up and got everything ready. I hit the water well before sunrise and paddled across the channel in near Port Aransas. I crept along the shoreline spotting numerous stingrays, ladyfish, crabs and even a nice redfish in the darkness. My light wasn’t strong enough to see these guys on video, but it was a cool sight. I caught the biggest fish on the chickenboy lure I generally use in the Nueces delta, but caught a couple on the hunchback wake bait too. The school of giant reds was my favorite experience of this trip. Although I didn’t end up with any fish for the table, I would say it was a successful trip and I prefer quality to quantity any day.
