QTR 20 Twelve Inch Millart Hand Shear

This is a review of the 12" Hand shear that I recently purchased.
Please Note: I am a beginning machinist and I do not pretend to know everything. Please always operate machinery in a safe manner and if you don't know, find a reliable source. DO NOT COPY ME. I make a lot of mistakes. I provide these videos for entertainment only.

I'd be. That's a great deal. I have used mine quite a few times since I made this review. The only thing I really would like is a platform to feed that parts into the cutter with an adjustable fence.

Thumbs up good review, not the usual rant against imported tools. You high lighted its faults and its good points a balanced review.

Thanks. I rely on finding tools that I can afford that also function well enough. I like to share those when I find them. If machining was my business, my priorities might be different, but its not, so they aren't. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

This video was extremely useful , there's a lot of good tips ,info, I hope you make another one after a while to show how to adjust the blades for stainless or mild steel of different thickness.

I am appreciate the comments, thanks. I don't think I know how to adjust the blades for a specific metal type. I have only adjusted them to set clearance.

@@DudleyToolwright, I know stainless steel does not need much of a gap because it does not "draw" like mild steel so the gap (for SS) should be about1/2 of what it is for mild steel ( regardless of the thickness of the material), that is my general rule of thumb, here is a good read for setting the blade clearance: www.gasparini.com/en/blog/get-rid-shearing-defects-in-four-steps/

It works better than I thought it would. I was quite pleasantly surprised. It could use a table on the infeed side along with some method to square stock. Thanks for the comment.

I keep a piece of rebar in the rod shear to keep the handle up on mine which is 6 in. I believe. Might want to think about having room in the rear if you want to cut long pieces of sheet metal.

I was thinking for a "safety" you could likely just put a 1/2" bolt in the rod cutting hole to make a lock out.

Thanks for the video - Like you said the manual is kind of useless. The other thing our box said that it could do a 12" cut - the blade only goes up enough to do a 10" cut - A little dissapointed in that. I wonder if you ground out a little bit where the handle stops the blade from going higher you could get more cut length? Thanks

I purchased the Northern Tool (Klutch) 12" model, which appears identical. I can cut unlimited length (beyond 12") by merely continuing to push the workpiece through past the back while constantly pulling down (multiple times) on the handle as I push to workpiece through. I'm not limited to just 12" length of cut nor do I have to reverse a piece such as done in this video.

Note that leverage ratio gets smaller as you get farther into a wide cut.

Dudley Toolwright Another way to think about mechanical advantage is to answer the question: how far does the cutting edge move for each increment of handle movement (relative to where force is applied).

They don't differentiate between materails. The spec is 1/4" thick, but I would imagine some alloys would be quite a bit less.

That's the best view of the whole lathe (12:30) I've seen to date, although I seem to be viewing asynchronously. It's very similar to mine, probably made in the same factory a generation later. Mine is a Turret America 13x40vs from 1992, only 2600 pounds, and once owned by Boeing. It was originally 460v and I suspect it wasn't running when I bought it. I pretty much re-wired the whole thing (460v needs only really thin wires!) and installed a new VFD. It looks like this one: cdn.globalauctionplatform.com/012b4ec4-844b-485c-b6dc-a5f00106bbfc/5110999b-06f0-4dce-f3e9-63fe3ad7f6b2/original.jpg, but not so rusty!

I couldn't quite see, but it appears that you have your tool holders stored on top of your lathe's splash guard? Mine came with some 2 by maybe 3 wood bolted to the top splash guard with drilled one inch holes. The protruding tools from the holders are inserted into the holes!. It doesn't work very well and you can't really tell which tool is which. I was going to make some out of 3/16" thick aluminum angle, cut to a width that would fit in the dovetail and bolted to the top of the backsplash. Then I saw some on eBay like these: www.precision1tec.com/Our-Products.html ...and I thought, "Hey, those are neat. I wonder if it would fit on my lathe..."

Yes. I built a shelf off of the back splash that holds quite a few. I got the inexpensive CXA holders from all industrial (on EBay). It is one of the places I reinvested the ad dollars from this channel. Every month I would get one or two. Thanks for the link, those holders are really nice and inexpensive. Tom Lipton of Oxtools did something similar with off the shelf parts from the hardware store, if I remember correctly.

just extend the bar at the front and it shouldn't lift the rear as the lever point and pivot point of the whole shear is at the front foot.

This review- the way it was done- beginning to end- functionality- information- dialogue- simplicity- COMPLETELY Blows away Eastwood's, Baileigh's, and Woodward's videos. Fancy shop, music, production quality DOES NOTHING FOR WHY I AM HERE. USEFULL INFORMATION THAT HELPS ME DECIDE TO BUY. Anybody that isnt completely blind will notice THESE SHEARS ALL COME FROM THE SAME PLACE--- With a different sticker and $100 more price tag. Think people. Paint it red and put a SnapOn sticker on it.
