Q&A: What is the difference between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Church?

Sponsor a transcript of this sermon @ LiveANewLifeInChrist.org/give
With the approaching Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church our “Ask Father” series speaks on the differences, or in this case similarities, between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Church. Defending the truth about God and the Church has never been an easy or simple task. The Holy Fathers of the Church debated rigorously and sometimes succumbed to name-calling. After 1,500 years of debate and disagreement the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox remain divided, but with hope of a future healing of the ancient schism that divides us. We ask all our fans to fervently pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit as the Church gathers. Though some Churches have indicated they will not attend the coming council, we here at Be Transfigured remain hopeful that, if nothing else, understanding the real history of the long-lasting debates in the Church will help to explain that protecting the truth of Orthodoxy requires patience and prayer. DISCLAIMER: This episode of Be Transfigured in not meant to be a complete discussion of the theological or ecclesiological issues that exist between the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Church, but is meant to be a general discussion to assist in our general understanding of how the Church functions.

I am Armenian & frankly I think it’s ridiculous we are separated over a single factor. The Christian world is under attack from all sides by atheism & materialism & it’s better all Orthodox Christians unite & celebrate our similarities rather than highlight our differences. I love all my Greek Orthodox brothers & sisters whom I consider cultural brothers & sisters to all Armenians.

@Markos pantopolos Yes, and you're still a heretic as long as you place the word Orthodox in quotations. The Orthodox Church is the true church. All others are heretical and man-made traditions. The Orthodox do not "curse" Monophysite churches, we have anathematized them and those who teach their heresy. They are also correct in mocking their false ascesis, as did Christ when he deliberately plucked wheat and healed the sick on the Sabbath, in violation of strict Rabbinic interpretations. I fail to see how Orthodox using Cheesefare Sunday to establish, by a bold contradistinction, their opposition to those who pervert the truth about the person of the Lord Jesus Christ, is substantially difference in spirit from the instances recorded in the Gospel where Christ is presented as eating and drinking wine with tax collectors and notorious sinners, essentially thumbing his nose at the dietary and ritual purity laws prescribed by the Pharisees. Like Cheesefare, this was an open affront to the dubious piety of those who falsely regarded themselves as theologically collect and righteous, while nullifying the heart of the law. But the intention of this affront was to expose hypocrisy and admonish sinners, something which is also the intention of the Orthodox when they make a point to eat Cheese on an Monophysite fast day, and not the petty malice and spite which you incorrectly and unsoundly attribute to these practices. And really, your damnable heresy and shameless opposition to the truth is no laughing matter. The fate of your eternal soul is nothing to snicker over.

Not sure why they are not accepted if they believe the same thing, who knows, let's hope that one day there recognise this and make the appropriate amendments in a council.

I am Antiochian Orthodox, I spent time with the Coptics and deeply love and respect them. The Oriental Orthodox are truly spiritually advanced. I've met more Coptic clergy that could advise me as I could find in the Eastern Orthodox. The West is ruining Orthodoxy. I am from a family with 2 opposing cultures and this division reminds me so much of this. I dont see them as heretics and if the top bishops and theologians on either side of the fences cant fix it then we the Christian people will make it change. Orthodox Christendom must UNITE.

Ever since Chalcedon, the Eastern and the Oriental sides have been calling the same stuff with different names. I'm member of the Oriental family, Ethiopian. The Oriental fathers throughout the ages just found it comfortable to call it with the exact same term it had been called Ephesus and before (i.e. "Miaphysis tou Theo Logo Sesarcomene" - One Nature of the Word of God Incarnate) Otherwise, the Eastern and the Oriental families believed in the same Christology along the way. Both natures of Christ are perfectly preserved after incarnation - Christ is perfectly God, in as much as He is perfectly Human.

The Father in this video mentions that both sides called each other names. That’s funny, because I grew up in one of the Oriental Orthodox churches, and not once did I hear anyone speaking negatively of the Greeks or Russians or any other EO church. If we talked about “heresy,” my church would talk about the Nestorian heresy and the Arian heresy, not about the Greeks or Russians. As for what I was raised to believe, I was raised to reject the term “Monophysite” (“one physis”). I was raised in the OO Church to believe in Jesus as both God and man, both human and divine. We recite the same Nicene Creed as the Eastern Orthodox churches.

The very term "monophysite" is indeed part of the ancient "name calling" I am referring to. There is most definitely a history of back-and-forth name calling as part of our communication throughout history. It may not be part of our contemporary experience, but the Church doesn't look solely at the contemporary.

correct me if i am wrong or atleast help me understand how this really matters and if this single factor really has merit. BUt i cant really find a real significant difference, i mean the Ethiopian(and orientals) orthodox church say, Tewahedo (Ge'ez: ተዋሕዶ täwaḥədo) is a Ge'ez word meaning "being made one" or "unified". This word refers to the Oriental Orthodox belief in the one single unified nature of Christ; i.e., a belief that a complete, natural union of the Divine and Human Natures (it doesnt deny the presence of both natures). these Churches themselves describe their Christology as miaphysite (meaning "one united nature" in reference to Jesus, the Greek equivalent of "Tewahedo").

I am glad you raise this question and let me contribute from the little I knew. Before 1875 (Ethiopian calander) Ethiopian Orthodox church's were divided Oriental and Easter theology. The majority of the church's were Oriental and some following Eastern. This dispute betwen the prists has created difficulties for governments for centuries. During Emperor Yohannis IV reign, the emperor with King Minilik at that time brings both church's for a debate in Wollo. It was a heated debate and finally the Orientals win the debate and the two church's united in to Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church. Tewahedo refers to the trinity of God. You can read about this history from the book of "Ase Yohannis and Ye Ethiopian Andenet" by Tekle Tsadik Mekuria. I may not be perfect but this is as little as I know about the Tewahdo church.

Fact checks: 1. The Syriac Orthodox Church, which is also in Syria and Turkey, mainly Syria (it used to be called the Syrian Orthodox Church) and the Antiochian Orthodox Church are in a state of limited intercommunion, where in the Levant, members of either church can be married and receive the Eucharist in either church. A similar agreement exists between the Greek and Coptic Churches of Alexandria. In addition, in the diaspora, Oriental Orthodox churches frequently share buildings with Eastern Orthodox parishes, and there are Eastern Orthodox priests who will communicate them. Others are more doctrinaire. 2. Greek and Coptic Orthodox Popes of Alexandria attempted to reunify their respective churches in the 1800s but were thwarted by the Albanian Khedive (the nominal viceroy of the Ottoman Sultan), who feared the political power of a unified Christian church in Egypt (even though the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria was and is much smaller than the Coptic Church). There were several other moments of communion nearly being established. Also, the Oriental church had an enormous influence on the Eastern church; their bishop Mar Severus composed the hymn “Ho Monoges” later added to the Byzantine liturgy by Emperor Justinian, and the Oriental church also was the first to have a presanctified liturgy, which became the basis for the Eastern Orthodox Presanctified Liturgy of St. James, which in turn was adapted into the Vesperal Presanctified Liturgy of St. Gregory used in Lent by the Eastern Orthodox, and on Good Friday by the Roman Catholics (until 1955, when Pope Pius XII rewrote the Mass of the Presanctified so that it no longer resembled the Eastern Orthodox liturgy), by Pope St. Gregory Dialogos. The Oriental church also never suffered from iconoclasm. 3. The Assyrian Church of the East, and the Ancient Church of the East, use the word Christotokos, and commemorate Nestorius as a saint; they have also been having ecumenical dialogue with the Eastern Orthodox. What is more, the Church of the East in antiquity, being a Syriac speaking church, was at times very close to the Syriac Orthodox Church, so that when the Syriac Orthodox Maphrian, the archbishop of the Syriac church in Iraq, Mar Bar Hebraeus, died in the 9th century, he died in a predominantly Assyrian town, and the majority of mourners present at his funerals were Assyrians (Nestorians), led in mourning by the Patriarch of the Assyrian Church of the East. The Roman Catholic church has been in dialogue with the Eastern Orthodox, the Oriental Orthodox, and the Church of the East, and has concluded that the Christology of all three Eastern churches is compatible with its own (and indeed, the Syriac Catholic and Chaldean Catholic churches have been encouraged, like the Eastern Catholic churches, to de-Latinize). 4. The Orthodox Church of America is also autocephalous, having been granted autocephaly by the Moscow Patriarchate around 1970; the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and several other Orthodox churches simply refuse to recognize this autocephaly. They should have been invited to the council. The Antiochians did not attend because the Ecumenical Patriarchate has not ruled on a pressing grievance they have with the Church of Jerusalem opening parishes in Qatar, which Antioch considers its canonical territory. Ultimately several other churches boycotted the 2016 Council of Crete.

John 1:1 In the beginning there was Word ,the Word was with God,the Word was God.Now we know now the Word is God.Meanwhile, John 1:14 the Word become Flesh(human). Now the question is who is become Flesh, the answer is the Word, okay who is the Word? In the above statement, the Word is God.Hence,God nature is almighty and human nature is weaknesses. After God become human, the nature of God become human nature and the nature of human nature become God nature.which means there would not be two different nature in Jesus Christ after God become human.we call it two opposite nature become one. Unified "oriental orthodox belief"and the right one according to the Bible.

Jesus Christ also said I am the ''son of human'' ee-ee-os an-th-ropu, most people know it as ''the son of man'', since man and human have simmilar meaning but the word ''human'' is more correct because ''man'' also means ''male'' while the word ''human'' is more absolute to the nature of humankind-mankind. Jesus Crist is not just God and man at the same time, but Perfect God and Perfect man at the same time without the one nature overlapping the other, He is a Divine mistery.

Father, bless. Dear Father, I'm very happy to hear this sermon. I was baptised into the Coptic Church a couple of years ago, but then was received into the Eastern Orthodox Church on Palm Sunday this year - purely for cultural reasons. I just thought I'd let you know that the British Orthodox Church is no longer a part of the Coptic Church, it broke away last year and is now an independent Church. It is so refreshing to hear your views on the situation between EO & OO, as Copts in particular have quite a hard time in Orthodox Facebook Groups. It has always been my understanding that the schism was a result of two parts of the Church stating the same thing, but in a different way. The Copts, and all the OO really have always believed Christ to have both a human and a Divine nature - but the way that they expressed this was not especially liked by the EO - and the OO said the same thing about the way that the EO expressed their Christological views. The fact that both sides agreed with St. Cyril's Christological definition didn't seem to help much either! We really are a "human Church", as you said. And then of course the Copts spent many many centuries oppressed by Islamic rule, making any sort of communication very difficult indeed. It seems that both sides of the Church have faced such trials - but now, hopefully - continuing where the wonderful H.H Pope Shenouda III started in the 1970's - we can work to heal the rift. Glory to God.

you are misinformed my friend and the answer you were given was not clear, The act of "Placing the cross on oneself" is a request for a blessing from God. We make if from right to left to mirror the actions of the priest when he blesses us. The priest, looking at the parishioners, blesses from left to right. Therefore, the parishioners, putting on the sign of the cross on themselves, do it from right to left.

In addition, the Bible doesn't speak two nature separated as God become Human. For example, Jesus says "If you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you inherit the kingdom of God." Is it the human nature who says this or the God nature. The answer is Jesus Christ(the two nature become one).not drama where God nature speak now and human nature speak another time.

In rejecting the Council of Chalcedon, the Catholic and Apostolic Church not only rejected the heresy Dyophysitism, but also the hegemony of Byzantium. The Oriental Churches do not encroach upon one another, we have no patriarch above the rest. In the end Constantinople collapsed, and with it its hegemony. Yet Oriental Orthodoxy stands in its original form.

I found it strange to hear Father saying the oriental orthodox church didn't accept Jesus Christ as having dual nature, contending that the oriental churches do not accept that it's possible for God to be born of a human. However, me being brought up in the Ethiopian Orthodox church(oriental), I was taught and still believe in the notion of Dyophysitism or the concept Jesus Christ with a dual nature- divine and human- unified in one person. So, we say Our Lady St. Mary conceived and gave birth to Christ, God incarnate and thus we call her Theotokos.

the first schism was not in 451 but with Ephesus counsil over christotokos and Theotokos, which lead to the Assyrian Church of the East. Nestorious himself proved to not belong to the nestorian heresy he was accused of. he proposed christotokos to combat the Aryan heresy. Anyways, I'm sure you didn't mention it because of brevity, but it's flat out incorrect to say Chalcedon was the first schism. The Assyrian Church is our second closest family member after the Orientals.

Reunification is not possible unless Orientals renounce their errors and accept Orthodox doctrines. Any attempt to re-unite the two improperly will produce schism within the Orthodoxy where those who can not accept union with the falsehood will have to separate themselves from those who sadly can.

@Sánchez Machado To this I can only respond that, from the traditional perspective of the Orthodox Church, you are monophysite. This is how the Orthodox Church has always viewed the Coptic Church. In other words, to us your "miaphysitism" is essentially "monophysitism". Moreover, you have been wrongly led to believe - whether by your own teachers or by Orthodox ecumenists - that the Orthodox Church has been mistaken, and that there's no reason for Coptic Christians to leave their church and be reconciled with Orthodox. Some Orthodox clergy and teachers will agree with you, but I am persuaded by the Saints and teachers whose writings are listed below. I believe they represent the true teaching of the Orthodox Church. Source: orthodoxinfo.com/ecumenism/ea_mono.aspx

I was born to parents who were part of the Oriental church. Father from Malankara Orthodox Church and mother from the Marthoma Church which is closer to the Reformed faith. I personally follow the Protestant Reformed movement. I have a lot of respect for the Orthodox Church but I feel the priest here took a little more liberty with the Protestants than what is the reality. For us Reformed Protestants the Tri-Unity of God is as important as it is to the Orthodox Churches. It is not just "all about Jesus". In fact the Protestant movement takes the strongest and most vocal stand against JWs, the Unitarians, The United Pentecostals et al. The one place where the Evangelical churches are behind is in repeatedly affirming the Triunity of the Blessed Godhead in our regular Worship services as the Orthodox Churches do. But please do not misunderstand and call us "It is all about Jesus" groups.

I agree with you. We don't go about chanting the Trinity. We believe in it and just move on to the most important work of risking our lives winning souls for Christ Jesus while the Orthodoxes are sitting down on "rich history" looking down on us. It's interesting that Protestants are the ones doing most of the hard work of defending the Trinity and the ontology of Christ in modern debates against Muslims, Atheists, and other heretic Christian groups.

The Hand Of Jibreel I do agree with you on the point that the Orthodox Church is lagging in doing apologetics and evangelization work. But have you thought about that what you have believed, you may have had it wrong all along? Think of Paul who knew everything word for word but on that Road to Damascus, he received a new revelation of what he had known before. That’s what orthodoxy offers up, the true teaching. - Let’s also not mistake calling out heretic teachings on the Protestant side as a ridicule by the Orthodox Church, for it’s very existence is to iron out kinks in the teaching of Our Lord. - The role of the Orthodox Church has been limited in large due to the attacks it’s been under for so long; notice they’re the minority compared to Catholics and Protestants. But they’re always on the quest to save souls in home countries and now efforts globally have been revived.
