Grew up Pentecostal. Never in a million years would I have ever imagined that I would be Orthodox. When introduced to it by Jay Dyer here on KZread it took a couple years to be fully convinced of it. Have been baptized recently into the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic church. @@Francisco_Castro_Loves_Music Yes, but his statement is not actually dogma in the Orthodox Church - he also misspoke with regards to salvation - nonetheless, what he was getting at is that while one is saved through faith, faith without works is dead and therefore not truly faith at all. Consequently, one must pick up their cross daily and follow Christ and in-so-doing work out their salvation. Jesus said, "if you love Me, keep my commandments." Orthodox Soteriology is "Synergist" which means that we must continually surrender our will to God's, keeping his commandments (those applicable in the New Covenant, not necessarily those given in the Mosaic Covenant) and walking in His way until by His Holy Spirit we are transformed into the image of His Son; our thoughts, words, and deeds being in unity with the Holy Spirit so that it is the Father's will that we desire and accomplish by the power of Him who is within us and our will is brought into perfect alignment with His own.

@@Eli1993. "husband can divorce wife for adultery, can wife divorce husband for the same ?" Yes, those passages are a two way street. The OT stuff is mostly descriptions of historical events, not moral teaching so I don't know why you think quoting history changes anything in regards to moral teaching. The NT stuff is true, but the meaning of those passages is not what you've inferred. The Husband himself has far greater restrictions in Christian marriage than the Wife, as he is supposed to never abandon her even if she is abusive, doesn't listen, insults him, uses all of the money, or anything else. He is permitted to separate, but unless she commits adultery he must not only be willing to support her, but also die for her at any time, and anything less is a failure of marital duty. Listening to your spouse in all things, aside from things that are sinful or sexual in nature, isn't nearly as restrictive especially given the statutes for separation.

Grew up Baptist but had a crisis and found the Jesus Prayer. Then I found the Orthodox Gardener channel, and then read the Church Fathers and The Way of the Pilgrim. There is such depth in Orthodoxy, it's impossible to explain in a 10 minute conversation. It takes some converts years to decide. It's like the meat and milk Paul speaks about. Orthodoxy is definitely meat, and even the most deep and amazing things I've heard in Baptist sermons now seem like milk and incomplete by comparison. No offense meant, and I have great respect for my ancestors and parents. They just were inheritors of a belief that was rightly rebelling against Catholic abuses, but they threw the baby out with the bath water and lost the Eucharist, which was universally believed to be the body and blood of Christ (John 6:21 to the end of the chapter). Now we need psychologists and counselors, but we were meant to have spiritual fathers like Paul was to Timothy. We Protestants don't have the sacraments to give us extra grace. We thought they were unnecessary because some Catholics in the middle ages abused them for monetary gain. The same thing happened in the Old Testament with Eli's sons, but that did not cancel the role of high priest just because some temple priests were evil.

But, do we, catholics make use of the plentihood that we have. I've seen protestants having greater faith than some catholics. I don't know, comparing myself to a similar protestant person, who will be in heaven first, me or him. But I'm happy both of us will eventually reach heaven.

He showed me that GOD loves me and I just have to let him into my heart, he was reading from a Orthodox Bible, I asked him how long he was Orthodox he said I always been, just didn't know it till he was 72 years old he was 84 when I met him, but he said he was never baptized Greek Orthodox when he himself was saved at 72 because he was given a life sentence for his crimes. 40 days before I was release from prison I started to pray for the first time in 25 years, I said to GOD I will become baptized Orthodox when I get out of this hell hole, the very next morning the man who took time to set me straight passed away, The guards said that he wrote me a letter but they were not able to give it to me, but the one guard told me what he wrote me. 8 words only ( I CAN NOW REST IN PEACE THANK YOU ) the guard asked me what's that letter about. Its been 9 years now that I have been Orthodox, life has now been really good to me I to have peace and feel love in my soul for the first time. It's never to late to find the truth.

Debunking eastern orthodox (youtube) I'm more blessed than mary Proof = Luke 11:27-28 27 And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!” 28 But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” In Luke 11:27 that random woman LITERALLY said Jesus your mother is Blessed, but are Lord Jesus LITERALLY said Believers are more Blessed than mary Amen. _ CHRIST alone John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. ACTS 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” There is only One Mediator between God and men, LORD Jesus Christ= 1 Timothy 2:5 For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus. Hebrew 9:15 And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. Hebrew 12:24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel. Hebrew 8:6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. Ephesians 2:18 For through Him we both have access by One Spirit to the Father John 15:5 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. Colossians 1:19-20 19 For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, 20 and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. _ Work of God = John 6:28 Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.” _ 1 Timothy 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach Paul allows bishops to get marry, but catholic church goes against paul. Now these eastern orthodoxes will give a Verses from 1 Corinthians7 to say that paul gave the advice to stay unmarried. But they will not tell you that the same chapter they quote says 1 Corinthians 7:28 "even if you do marry, you have not SINNED". The passage literally says "young women, young men" and a bishop is supposed to be a Church ELDER. Christian should not cover their head 1 Corinthians 11:4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head. ( The head of man is Lord Jesus Christ). So the priests and bishops should not cover their head. Believers are Royal Priest 1 Peter 2:5,9. Revelation 1:6. _ Jesus said Matthew 23:9 9 Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven. The context is not calling pharisees, sadducees and PRIESTS father and teacher. _ Whenever a eastern orthodox argue about mary being the mother of God Use this to defeat the argument. Luke 8:21 But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it.” Matthew 12:46-50 46 While He was still talking to the multitudes, behold, His mother and brothers stood outside, seeking to speak with Him. 47 Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.” 48 But He answered and said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers?” 49 And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother.”. Mark 3:35 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.” John 19:26-27 26 When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” 27 Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home. ( Jesus basically said John is the son of mary, and mary is the mother of John from that time onwards). By the way sarah is the mother of all proof=Galatians 4:21-26. _ Music instruments are allowed for Christians Revelation 14:2 2 And I heard a voice from heaven, like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of loud thunder. And I heard the sound of harpists playing their harps. Revelation 5:8 8 Now when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. Jeremiah 31:4 (GOD speaking in this verse) 4 Again I will build you, and you shall be rebuilt, O virgin of Israel! You shall again be adorned with your tambourines, And shall go forth in the dances of those who rejoice. Even in Heaven with their perfect voices they had instruments then why not us _ We should not pray to apostles Romans 1:25 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. Acts 10:25-26 25 As Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. 26 But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I myself am also a man.” Acts 14:15 15 and saying, “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them, Revelation 19:10 10 And I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” Revelation 22:8-9 8 Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed me these things. 9 Then he said to me, “See that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God." Colossians 2:18 18 Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility and worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, You cannot go to Father through saints nor mary, you can only go to the Father through Lord Jesus Christ= John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. Ephesians 2:18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father. Holy Spirit intercedes for us=Romans 8:26 26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And CHRIST as well=Romans 8:34 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Hebrews 7:25 25 Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. It's Christ and Holy Spirit who intercedes for us not apostles Even old Old Testament says Christ intercedes for us Isaiah 53:12 12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors. _ Humans when with Holy Spirit and apostolic succession still go wrong. And eastern orthodox is not immune to that 1)Peter was not perfect human nor was he a perfect disciple 2)He sank down while walking on water 3)Our Lord said to peter get behind me satan 4)Peter reject our Lord 3 times 5)Our Lord rebuked Peter for calling fire from heaven 6)Our Lord rebuked Peter when he cut of the soilders ear 7)Paul rebuked Peter for being hypocrite because he was acting different in front of Jews and different in front of gentiles. 8) Moses messed up, and he was a important part of Bible ( that's why he never entered the promised land), 9)David messed up ( and he has the Holy Spirit), 10)King Soloman messed up, 11) Saul messed up and God regretted the decision (1 Samuel 15:10-11). Hatrick (Saul then David then Soloman back to back messed up) 12)The apostles run away a day before Lord Jesus got locked up. 13)The early church messed up Rev 2:18-20, 1 Corinthians, Galatians. 14) Apostle John when receiving Revelation worshiped an angel and the angel said "see you do not do that. Worship GOD" Revelation 22:8-9 15) Paul and Barnabas both had a sharp disagreement on John Mark( Acts 15:36-41). And remember that both were Apostles filled with Holy Spirit. 16) Church in Revelation 2:1-6 Lord Jesus Himself said to the church of Ephesus that "I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars" but guess what that church still had problems and Lord also pointed that out "Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love......" So as you can see Churches can do Biblical and unbiblical things at the some time. If these great people could mess up, why do you think the catholic church wouldn't mess up. _ Apostles are allowed to marry, 1 Corinthians 9:1-5 _ Breaking 10 commandments by having statues, carved images, idols, changing the Sabbath to sunday

I remember clearly a former LCMS elder when I met him, who became an Orthodox deacon by the time I was looking, telling me how relieved he was to have all of those arguments behind him and settled. That was 10 years ago, and now I understand. I'm not angry about the most recent catechism issue: I'm sad. And so is the former elder, now my sponsor and also a priest. I wish there was a way to convince everyone in LCMS who is upset that these are natural consequences. And that you don't have to deal with it. You don't have to fight your brothers. @@jk6653 hello, that passage it not speaking of priesthood at all or tradition. It is speaking of those who justify themselves purely on their works. You’ll be happy to know, that is not what is taught by the orthodox and my church had spoke many times about how we are justified through faith and that our works are what we call “zeros” to God. Second priesthood, or I assume your problem is with the title “father” as many people feel the same. However, when Jesus said “call no man father” it was not simply a command and him saying “how dare you use the term father” or else you and everyone else is in trouble for calling the man who gave birth to you dad/father/etc. He is speaking to the Pharisees to get them to humble themselves. They held themselves in such high esteem for being religious leaders and would often abuse this power as opposed to humbling themselves before God. To further illustrate this. Paul himself uses the term father in Corinthian when he tells them he has became their father through the gospel. Lastly, there is scripture in Corinthians, Paul says to practice what you have learned, received, heard, and seen him him. So he did affirm not everything will come in writing. Tradition is based on the scripture and does not interfere with it in any way. For instance, orthodox will dunk/dip/whatever terminology you want to use, the person being baptized in the water 3 times because that is what was taught to the original Apostles to do and how they have always done it

Grew up with an atheist father and a lukewarm Christian mother, I converted to Christianity (specifically, I went to a Baptist church, but I had a low understanding of any kind of theology) I then had multiple conversations with a catholic friend of mine, he schooled me on the Eucharist (he had me read the whole of John chapter 6), church history (he pointed me to Ignatius, Eusebius, and many others writings), and a multitude of other things. The final issue that I had was the Pope because while I was reading these histories, I hadn't found anything claiming what modern-day catholics now claim. That is when I remembered something my friend said to me: "Well, there are two churches that claim to be the one Christ founded, the Roman Catholic Church, and the Eastern Orthodox Church" Then I started to read about Orthodoxy, and then it all finally clicked, I can say tell you all with 100% certainty, the Orthodox Church is the One, Holy, Catholic (Universal), and Apostolic Church that was handed down to us via the Apostles. I hope to be accepted into the Church soon, in fact, I am meeting with my priest tomorrow to speak to him about that, and many other questions I have God bless you all, Kyrie elesion

WONDERFUL interview!! They did such a good job of explaining Orthodoxy! I was a Baptist (Reformed) my entire adult life, until I was 48 years old. I made the "mistake " at that time of reading several of the Early Church Fathers (i.e. Clement, Ignatius, Irenaeus, etc), where I found a very different Christianity than anything I had ever known. And that form of Christianity was clearly NOT Protestant! As a result, I gladly converted to Orthodoxy! That was 18 years go! And I greatly appreciate how the Baptist gentleman interviewed them! Just very open, honest, and intelligent questions. Well done. ☦️☦️☦️

I betimes called you Peter, because you will support all its buildings. You are the inspector of those who will build on Earth a Church for me. If they should wish to build what is false, you, the foundation, will condemn them. You are the head of the fountain from which my teaching flows; you are the chief of my disciples. I was born and baptized Greek Orthodox, but I wasn't raised in the church. I was raised in a generic, nondenominational church because of the great distance to the nearest GOC. Now I live about 3 miles from one. It's so beautiful. Isn't this really the message we all know? You can't just say, "I believe!" and skate on without a care! You have to walk the talk every day. That's no surprise to anyone, is it? Who has read the Bible and believes that all he has to do is say the words and he's in? It's not magic! And I'm not saying it's about works. I'm saying you have to put you living where your mouth is. Stay working your godly life. Be an example. Do good. Speak well. Share the Word and show the love. That's every church, if you're listening. Surely no one is telling you there's an "open sesame" heaven.

My Church teaches once saved always saved. But I have never felt this is true- I believe if I endure to the end I will be Saved. I have read in Revelation that names can be erased in the Book if Life and inJohn 14 says that if I love God I will obey Him. I wouldn’t think He will want us with Him if we don’t love Him. So I try everyday to please God for all He has done for me and see that I still mess up. This “getting up” after falling short is what I try to do - I fear His judgement and I want to be with Him forever in Heaven. Never heard this and it resonates with me completely. Thank you.

When I was in the process of converting from a Calvinist Baptist tradition to Orthodoxy, I asked my priest "how can I have assurance of my salvation?" To which he responded, "you don't get to have that. Rather, have assurance that God loves you and act accordingly." Believe it or not, this is very freeing to the believer. My salvation is in the hands of almighty God, who loves me more than I can even put into words and it's not up to me to figure it all out.

Very well explained in such a short summary of an eternal truth... My own experience seems too complicated to be explained in a few sentences, but in a nutshell is this: I grew up in a traditional Eastern Orthodox family, but teenage years lead me to a rebellious, sinful life ; Later i got involved in the modern movement of meditation until i realized it's an organized religion, when i went to Thailand; I also had the opportunity to get to know closely muslim people and their faith ; And during my time in London, i explored different denominations as i thought there was no difference between Christians, so i went to Pentacostal gatherings a few times ; i went to the nearby Methodist hall once or twice ; i used to sing with Baptists more often than the others ; i talked to JW knocking on my door and invited them in my house (because of love) ; i met people from the Adventist movement and learned about their belief ; i met two young boys, who gave me their book of Mormons and insisted on saying a prayer with them at the coffee shop ; i even learned about the Rastafari religious movement... Until, i finally went back to the original faith of the Apostles, the true Church founded by God through our Lord Jesus...at first, i was so convinced that the Orthodox church cannot be true because of the icons, but after months of praying, fasting and reading the Bible, one answer was revealed after another to the point where i learned the Truth right from its original source - The Old Testament, where in 2 Kings 13:21 we have an example of holy remains making miracles as it is still to this day in the Eastern Orthodox Church ! Contemplating on the realities of our so confused world of different faiths today, i also discovered another simple truth- most of the religious organizations that i had the chance to encounter follow an individual voice- Buddha, Muhhamad, the Pope, some pastor or prophet in the evangelical denominations, etc. , while in the Eastern Orthodoxy it has always been the collective voice that matters- major decisions have been made during the first 7 ecumenical councils and this is actually an example given by the first apostles in Jerusalem, when "they all joined together" to decide who to replace Judas ( Acts 1:12-26 ) Another interesting fact is that if i decide tomorrow to go to an Orthodox service in an Arabic country, for example, the music, the surroundings, the sacraments will be the same as it is in my local Orthodox church, which is a clear sign of the universal nature of our Church. What is more, it is an implementation of God's prayer for His children - to be all one ! The divine liturgy is a true union in Christ that has been celebrated for centuries (the liturgy of st John Chrysostom for example has been celebrated since the 5th century!). Perhaps there are many more things that we could add to this, but hopefully this helps at least one soul on the way to the Truth and the Life in the Holy Universal Apostolic Church!

There is a saying for that! OCA priests are overeducated and underpaid while GOARCH clergy are overpaid and undereducated. Of course it’s not entirely true but the pay part is 99% factual. Apologetics is important. OCA clergy are typically better suited to speak to people outside the faith because they themselves are often converts and are acculturated to a world that is mostly non-Orthodox. Greek clergy usually come from clerical families or at least grew up in the Greek Orthodox Church. Their experience is generally not that of a convert and living inside the microcosm of Greek Orthodoxy doesn’t readily present challenges that necessitate explaining the faith in so many words.

I was an atheist, a nihilist and a hedonist. God used the writings of Father Seraphim Rose, a man I feel is likely a saint, to open my mind to the presuppositions of modernity and to the truth of Jesus Christ. I have been Orthodox for nearly two years. It’s a narrow path and it asks a lot of you, but that’s why I feel it is the truth. Life isn’t about feeling good all the time, and though we should find joy where we can, life requires suffering and our joy is not of this world.

Great video and respectful interview. I'd might add, the priest was trying to answer your questions in a framework that would be understood in a Protestant mindset. Specifically, when you asked what denomination he was, he replied 'Greek Orthodox'. Technically, Greek is an ethnic overlay, but it does help one to understand where he is addressing your questions from. Orthodoxy is neither Eastern or Western - but it is helpful to determine where one is coming from - ontologically, Christologically and soteriologicaly. Eastern Orthodox encompasses the Greek, Romanian, Serbian, Russian, Georgian, and Byzantium traditions... as he briefly mentioned, the hierarchical structures that are Conciliary... The Church of 7 Councils. There are other groups who may have Orthodox in their names, but are not in Communion because they have rejected one or more of the Seven Councils. As a former Protestant, I understand your questions - but to most Orthodox - they're hearing 'buzzing' in their ears because they don't understand your 'fronema' (mindset). Chances are, even when you use same terminologies - contextually, you are not matching what is meant by the words used. Additionally, where Rome was backed into a corner by the Reformers in trying to explain complex dogmas, the Eastern expression has no desire to provide such answers, leaving things alone mystically speaking. There's no need to reduce things down to where rational thought takes over. Most American Protestants teachings at their core are Roman... with Reformers and Radical Reformers adding their opinions and societal influences to flavor the pot. The priest mentioned the Church Fathers, their writings, et cetera. When you look at Church history, the Fathers, and experience liturgical life - you will gather a whole witness of the Church, her traditions and her teachings. Most Protestants have never branched beyond their Reformation favorites. I recommend a Protestant writer, Christopher A. Hall, "Learning Theology with the Church Fathers". This book helped me to begin transitioning from the fragmented West, to the fullness of the Faith in Christ Jesus. In the bond of peace - Lee!

Glory to Jesus Christ! Glory Forever. I was raised as an evangelical. I was always very serious about it. Though many nights I would cry to myself about weather or not I was really saved. I saw sin in my heart. I would pray the sinners prayer again and again, trying to genuinely mean it and have real faith. So sad, it was just faulty soteriology. I grew up and as a young man read the Apostolic Fathers of the Church. I realized quickly, these are not Protestants nor evangelicals in how they understand the Faith. But they were true heroes! Lovers of Christ with such intensity… like the Apostles who appointed them. I simply knew I had to find this Faith. After 2.5 years asking Roman Catholics what their perspective was, I turned away from them, finding that something was deeply wrong there. Continued to study Church History and eventually found Orthodoxy. Glory to God, that was in 2010 that I walked through the doors! I have seen so many blessings and also true spiritual warfare, but Christ is faithful though I so often fall down. But there is genuine hope and life! I cry still when I recognize my sinfulness. Only now I don’t worry about my salvation. I simply have a confident hope through my Faith in His great kindness, mercy, forgiveness and love. I know He wants to save me on the last day. But the question is, “Do I want to be saved?” God grant is all to be found on His right side with those who will enter into the Joy of the Master. My love to you all, and respect given for a respectful interview. It gets much deeper than what was shared, but this is a good start!
