Q&A #1

Nick Carveth asks Don some questions submitted by a psychoanalytic psychotherapist colleague about Fairbairn, Kernberg, Jung, Klein and others. I forgot to make the point that I agree with Masud Khan’s idea of cumulative as well as shock trauma, an idea I agree with. But I wanted to make the point that the human condition is such that all of us, to some degree, suffer from PTSD.

I think this is one of the things missing from the theory component of psychoanalytic trainings - theories and ideas translated for us into simply put, clear, language, and importantly, with examples that all of us can relate to. What a difference that makes and I, and I'm sure any others listening in here, appreciate these lectures greatly. Having Nick on board is a real bonus too. Thank you both.

I realized I forgot to address the question of Masada Khan’s idea of cumulative as distinct from shock trauma, an idea I certainly agree with. But I wanted to make the point that the human condition is such that all of us, to some degree, suffer from PTSD.

Prof Carveth, so good to see another video from you, with your son no less! I didn’t realize he is a psychoanalytic therapist, that’s great. Your videos really help me in practice. I am currently a somewhat new psychoanalytic therapist, and I am finding that I am having a difficult time living with the two modes that I see necessary in therapy; that part of me that knows theory, and the part of me that is “being with” the patient, without memory or desire as Bion says. I think it is quite an important task to integrate both sides (talk about a split), and a difficult one at that, especially so that one doesn’t impede the other.

Yes, true. But such integration should increase with experience.p

Love the dreds ..! Thank God for you and your son , 5:50 in ... Don the most mature rational and potentially non conformist analyst on the block . How important it is to be able to tilt at giants but do it a considered and reflective manner it also enables me to gain more insight into the field or the collection of theories and theorists or idea makers in psychoanalysis . I have not read much Fairbarn or Winnicot . But love the humpoy dumpy analogy it is all most the child can bear a certain degree of "abandonment" and cross communication but at some point it becomes intolerable like there are hair line cracks in the bloated and distorted ego process . After all it is nothing other than a mental snap shot reinvested with "magical powers " if I do this then that , a kind of idiosyncratic formula , built up out of eddies and flows of psychic currents , disturbances in much smoother mythical ( mystical state ) of inner harmony and outer correspondence maybe ? 7:00 > Wainscots dramatization of this true self perhaps is due to the Buddhist Emptiness and the recoil back to the original shock of birth or in utero trauma that at this point there is no holding onto the primal scream the energy that is locked up , it'll all come out .....With it disastrous consequences the Mother or later other will respond defensively then because of the totality there is nothing else ,or it is too late Ive done it now , perhaps this is why also maybe coupled somewhat with the god father as a punitive destructive demigurge so prevalent in the Old testament so do have sympathy here with W. Will watch the rest later , you have revived my interest yet again despite financial and now physical problems ( my cycling accidents compounded my cataracts and mean i cannot use my gifted car so am stuck in Mere and poverty puts training out of reach ).

Hello Dr Carveth, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I was wondering whether the level of fragmentation that you mention from Kohut's failure of self-object functions is the same kind of fragmentation experienced in dissociative disorders like DID (formerly called Multiple personality disorder).

What is your opinion on Dr Gordon Neufeld's approach to parenting based on developmental attachment theory which is derived from Bowlby of course. That is, if you've heard of the man. I know this isn't directly related to psychoanalytic theories though, so..

Professor Carveth, do you think that Winniccot’s phrase might be better understood in application rather than as a generalized statement? If one is always his true self with everybody, one quickly learns why that is worst than “being eaten by cannibals”. Also, does it ever appear to you that some of the major religions pray not to god, but to the self image? Did Jung see the self image as god’s image in humans’ psyche? Thank you!

I have no problem with the idea that one cannot be one’s true self always and with everyone, of course. My problem is with Winter cards idea that one can never, must never, allow one’s true self to be known by anyone. I think people project themselves on too many things and people, including certainly God. But I think we need to get over worshipping ourselves. Locating God in the self is not getting over the self but indulging it.
