PYRAMID LAKE - Fly Fishing - 16 pound Cutthroat Trout!

On this day, we had a series of storms moving through. This was a rare occasion where it seemed like the fish were congregated in one specific area. After some trial and error, we pinpointed where they were. Stripping flies was the most effective method. Once it became clear that they mostly wanted the classic Pyramid Lake Beetle, I switched to a double beetle rig and caught a bunch of fish. I ended up catching my best fish of the trip; a 30”, 16 lb Pilot Peak strain Lahontan Cutthroat.

Thanks! I agree. We’re all learning together. I share what works for me, and love when others share in return. It’s crazy to me when people are reluctant to share which patterns or colors are working well for them. As if it’s gonna mean less fish for them if their super-secret, #14 green midge gets leaked haha.

Love the videos. Looks like an epic time down at Pyramid Lake. Quick question, with your beetle pattern, are you using full sinking line for deeper in the water column or are you using floating line for surface takes? Thanks! Keep up the good work on your content! Tight lines!

Full sinking line. It’s actually a 30’ t-14 shooting head, attached to monofilament running line. That t-14 quickly sinks to the bottom and sits in the sand. This ensures that the foam beetle will stay within about 12-24” of the bottom, depending how much tippet I use. As I strip in line, that fly dives down. When I pause, it slowly floats up towards the surface. It’s basically a reverse jigging action.

Hey Steve! I’m a big fun of the Rio Switch Chucker line for big lakes like Pyramid. They are sized to match Switch rods, not singlehanded rods. For example, If you have a 5-weight switch rod, you would get the 5-weight switch chucker line. But if you were to pair a 5-weight switch chucker line with a single-handed rod, it would pair with a 7 or 8 weight rod. Any rod manufacturer will tell you the line size they would recommend with your specific rod, if you send them an email. There’s also a new fly line from Scientific Anglers called the Integrated Switch Line, which is very similar to the Rio Switch Chucker. I haven’t used it myself, but I’ve heard good things. That Scientific Anglers line might only be available at renoflyshop.com. Hopefully that helps you out!

Hey soggy, been watching your stuff for awhile now and have been loving ever single one of your videos you post! I just have one question, what equipment do you use for your pyramid lake stripping set up, and why do you prefer it over what other people would prefer? Just a question, keep up the good work!!

Thank you! Good to hear! Rod: Totally personal preference between a 10 or 11 foot, single, or two-handed rod. You can cast further with longer, two-handed rods. But shorter rods can be nice cause you can strip your flies in closer. A lot of the fish tend to take the flies right at your feet. Reel: any quality, large arbor reel with a sealed drag system. I use an orvis hydros. Line: (see my “Pyramid Lake Sinking Line” video for a more detailed breakdown.) 200 yds of 30 lb backing. 150 feet of 50 lb OPST Lazar Line for my running line. And 30’ of T-14 sinking line. I like building my own shooting head/running line set up like that, as opposed to buying some sort of integrated line. Mostly because it’s a fraction of the cost. But also, I can cast that set up way further than any integrated line. In some of my videos, you may notice that I use my net as a Stripping basket. I have it set up on my ladder so my line hand deposits the line into the net every time I strip. I like that more than using a Stripping basket because the stripping basket never did a good job of holding all my line anyways. And this way I don’t have to worry about wearing an extra piece of gear. If you mess around with this system, you will, no doubt, experience a lot of knots and tangles while you’re getting the hang of it. Most of that will go away as you get more used to casting this set up. But taking the time to stretch out your line before casting will help a lot as well.

I am contemplating purchasing a switch rod, but i want to make sure I'm getting one I can use relatively easily and still get the job done. I am a 71 year old female that loves fishing Pyramid, but my casting skills are a bit lacking and I need all the help I can get! I don't want to spend too much, but I do want a quality rod to use. What would you suggest? Also, I really enjoyed this video, but wanted to know where you fish your beetle? (By the way, where did you find one with an eye in the middle? Very interesting!

The beetle fly is one I’ve tied myself. I’ve seen that idea on Instagram. I think people call it a “cyclops beetle”. It might entice a fish that wouldn’t otherwise bite, but mostly I think it helps the longevity of the fly. It prevents the lip on the beetle from folding back, or tearing off over time. That foam lip on the front of the fly is what causes the fly to wiggle while retrieved. I usually only fish the beetle on a sinking line on Sandy beeches. The sinking line sits right on the bottom, and the foam beetle floats just off the bottom. If there are any rocks or weeds on the bottom, it would surely get snagged. I would probably recommend an 11-foot 6-weight switch rod. I like the Moonshine Drifter, the Redington Claymore, and the Redington Dually. The moonshine is the cheapest option. I can’t tell a difference between the three rods. I might be able to if I was more experienced using switch rods. Some might recommend a 7 weight switch rod. That’s what I use primarily. But I can cast my 6 weight rod all day with less fatigue than a 7 weight. But definitely worth trying to get multiple opinions.

I fish Pyramid, sometimes from rocks, sometimes from a tube, sometimes from a ladder, and sometimes walking and wading the shore. Curious: You sounded super dismissive of the people on ladders and made it seem like you had to come down to their level to catch fish that day. Maybe you didn't intend it that way. It sounded like that though. I fish all over the U.S. in lakes, rivers, etc. and in diff. parts of the world. I think that ladder fishing at Pyramid is super cool. It is a prominent symbol of that lake, number one, number two it can be effective. And number three, it is fun to be a part of a little ladder community on one of the beaches. Fun to start seeing someone hook up and you know that the fish are coming around so hold on tight ;). I suppose your comment reflected a disdain for crowds. I get that and also love FF for the solitude. But I know the deal at Pyramid--usually not much solitude. I find the folks there fun and ready to party ;). Anyway, I never post to any sites, but for some reason felt compelled. Nice 16#er!

Honestly, this comment got me thinking a lot! At first, I was like, well of course I’m joking, and should have verbalized that in the video. But then I thought about why I felt like I had to act like ladder fishing at pyramid was a negative thing, even jokingly. I think it’s cause that’s the biggest pushback I get when describing Pyramid Lake to people. Those who haven’t experienced it often say how they’re not interested in “combat fishing”. I think I subconsciously talked negatively about ladder fishing because I let those people make me feel insecure about liking it. Thank you for making me realize that! Cause you’re totally right. It’s a party, and it’s a blast. Everyone out there is constantly hyping each other up. So thank you for opening my eyes! Of course, I still primarily seek solitude while fishing, but every now and then, it’s good to build that comradery with fellow anglers. Lucky Pyramid is a place where you can do both.

@@SoggySleeves Right on! Appreciate the context/explanation. I didn't mean to bust your balls too hard. You and I are on the same page. Sometimes the company can be fun but mostly I agree that quiet, solitude and head space are important parts of fly fishing. I will frequently find the spot where not many people are and feel stoked if I catch fish there--my little secret/victory. But sometimes I will feel like you, "well, I suppose there is a reason folks are stacked up here ;)". For example, I fish the Madison or the Bighorn DESPITE all the people because the fishing is so damn good. But I have been fishing the Madison for nearly 30 years now, so I know where and when to get away from most folks. I am sure you know how to do that at Pyramid, too. See you out there sometime...

I know people who catch and keep. I’ve never tried them myself, but I’ve heard they’re tasty. There is a slot limit. Keepers are 17-20”, or anything over 24”. Two fish per day limit. 2 in the 17-20” range, or 1 in the 17-20” range, and one 24”+. I believe that legally you have to verify your catch at the ranger station before processing the meat.

For sure! It might take a few months. I’ve added it to my list of video ideas! Haha. What type of line are you using? You’ll wanna make sure you’re using a fly line with a long belly, and probably fitted to your rod. I use the Rio Switch Chucker line most of the time. But the Scientific Anglers Anadro line is a great option as well. The Anadro line is more versatile, whereas the switch chucker line is more specific in its purpose.

A lot of people actually do fish it from float tubes. WaterMasters are very popular out there. Especially during October-November when the trout are chasing bait balls off-shore. The tubes can continue to be very effective the entire season, but I think most people ditch them around December-ish just cause the fish are in so close to shore at that point, you might as well be fishing from the bank. I always take my little pontoon with me for those slow days when it seems like the fish are just beyond the reach of shore anglers.
