Episode 800 - Puzzle Palace (1/22/23)
/ chapo-trap-house
Art/Animation by Emily Halaka @emilyhalaka
EDIT: Original file of this episode contained some muted audio clips. File is now fixed, redownload to correct.
We start off today’s episode with a farewell to the DeSantis campaign as the Never Back Down PAC backs down, and dedicates its last days to puzzling through Iowa to the Moon Palace Retreat. We discuss Biden’s general lack of a coherent position going into this long, long general campaign, and how it’s leaving his would-be defenders in the lurch. BUT, for the main thrust of this ep, we celebrate one man: The Beekeeper. Because when the hive is threatened, when the Queen is producing faulty Offspring, then there’s one man you must call. To Bee or Not To Bee? To bee, bitch. Let’s keep some bees.

13:30 As far as the culture wars, even Trump is perplexed by it. In a speech he said, "I'll talk about how great the economy was and how we brought all these jobs back and people will be like 'yes, Mr President, that's very nice'. And then I'll talk about trans people and people go nuts!"

@GeraldoRivera Attempts to rewrite, whitewash or downplay the history of J6 are pathetic and dangerous. We get it. You want to justify voting for Trump even though he inspired & incited the Capitol riot. What happens if or when he loses again next time? Remember how you felt about Trump on J7. 2 Highlighted reply @MimeSlayer1337 @MimeSlayer1337 10 hours ago THIS PERSON IS SCHIZOPHRENIC Dude, your obsession in turnig. : 2023 was the year where I finally broke in terms of federal electoral politics. I swallowed the collapse of student debt relief, the infrastructure bill, began to choke at the repeal of Roe v Wade, but finally puked bile when October 7th happened. Hamas making short work of the Iron Dome really ought to make anybody who gives a shit about the working class in this country absolutely furious, because Biden's public support of the UAW strike was in actual fact disingenuous politicking. It ought to be perceived as a trade-off in order to secure greater funding of the US/Mexico border wall via executive mandate, which occurred two days prior to the beginning of the shit show in Gaza. On top of that, Biden admitted border walls don't work several days later, yet he still intends to piss all that money away at the expense of the local environment and other social welfare programs many people in this country still need in order to make it month to month. It's CRETINOUS BEHAVIOR. But what actually breaks my heart is the fact I feel like my vote is equivalent to gambling with people's lives and livelihoods - like I have to ask myself just who am I willing to sacrifice to cast this vote in good conscience and how many are required to be sacrificed in order to feel like I did the right thing? I'm beyond caring whether I sound like Ivan Karamazov by saying this, but I refuse the salvation being offered me by American society if one more child in Gaza has to get fucking vaporized in their sleep. God dammit.

Even now you're giving them too much credit and beating yourself up over it. There is no moral light between 100% Hitler and 99% Hitler. Genocide Joe and Trump are both monsters and the choice is which grimdark schlock universe you choose, knowing your choice hardly matters anyway. Organize locally, do mutual aid, go grill. But none of those ghouls deserve your heartache.

The salvation is Lucy holding the football for Charlie Brown. The entire American project is built on false ultimatums. It is most obvious to me in military enlistment. You are made to jump through hoops and take risks to receive basic dignities that could have been given the whole time and for much cheaper. What is the logical connection between kicking in a door and getting money for college? Who benefits from all those extra steps?

The "Caste" book was pretty good, I thought. Really nothing like how the gang describes it here, and certainly has no Trayvon Martin/Auschwitz flights of fancy. It's not trying to transpose the Indian caste system onto America, it examines race as a caste, in the sense that if you're black, you can never NOT be black and that comes with a whole slate of cultural, social and economic implications. This being in contrast to a class-based analysis of racism because people can an do change class over time. DuVernay's movie about this seems truly insane, almost like the lib version of a Dinesh DeSouza joint. Especially because it seems to be framed as a biopic of Isabel Wilkerson. So I guess it's about her connecting all these threads and building up the will to write a moderately well-received non-fiction book... just bizarre to me.

The reason most voters don’t think a Trump presidency will end democracy is that we already had a Trump presidency and democracy didn’t end. One can always think one is in an unprecedented crisis by listing the worst things happening in the country at the time. But this is a nonrandom sample, and selecting the worst developments in a given year will always make it seem as if a catastrophe is imminent. It’s good to remember the apparently existential crises of decades that people in recent times have lived through, including: The 1960s, with the assassination of three of the country’s most well-known figures, including the president; urban riots in which dozens of people were killed and neighborhoods burned in a single night; an unpopular war that killed 10 times as many Americans as died in Iraq and Afghanistan; fears of annihilation in an all-out nuclear war; a generation that rejected the reigning social and sexual mores, many of whom called for a violent Communist or anarchist revolution; a segregationist third-party candidate who won five states. The 1970s, with five terrorist bombings a day in many years, the resignations of both the vice president and the president, double-digit inflation and unemployment, two energy crises that were thought might end industrial civilization, America held hostage in Iran, a sitting president almost unseated by his own party, etc. The 1980s, with violent crime and homelessness reaching all-time highs, new fears of nuclear escalation, a crack cocaine crisis. The 2000s, with fears of weekly 9/11-scale attacks or worse attacks with chemical, biological and nuclear weapons; plans for the surveillance of the entire American population; widespread ridicule and hatred of a president who led the country into two disastrous wars.

Change of the broader party will always come from the base and providing more votes so we don't have to rely on conservative members of the party.

The take is about turning policy into political capital, not disapproving of bi-partisan labeling of the policy. They're just outlining how Democrats don't want to win/don't know how.

This is something Chapo is both right and wrong about. Democrats love to pass big bills that are specifically designed so they they cannot take credit. Obama with Obamacare is one of these; the entire thing was designed in such a way that even if it helps you it's painstakingly designed to make sure you don't feel like the government is doing a good thing for you and that the Democrats are responsible for it. It can't just be "you get a thing and it's easy", it has to be fucking annoying. The part they're wrong about is that whenever Biden or the Democrats try to tout the bill it gets basically called "worse than nothing" by people who would ostensibly count themselves as their audience. There is literally nothing a Democrat can do that will get the approval of the general leftist podcast/twitter warrior audience. Besides leaving Afghanistan, which seems to have permanently damaged Biden's approval. Go fig. congrats to Will for sweating blood as he tried to tepidly compliment Biden's NLRB though

Israel ruined this podcast. If you are unwilling to embrace any antisemitic conspiracies, while at the same time blaming Israel for the conflict is a nonsensical position to take. If you do not allow yourself any conspiratorial thinking and just go by the facts then Israel is completely in the right and your position makes no sense.

Like the fact that israel has murdered at least 25 palestenian children a year since the 90s. Or the fact that they have murdered over 14 thousand children in 4 months. You're right, it is clear. Clear that israel is an ethnostate that is committing an ethnic cleansing.

Or the fact that there is Jewish only streets in israel, or all of the settlers in the west bank. There isn't a way you can frame this to make israel sound like anything other than an oppressive and violent state. I mean they are sniping people with drones who are going to church man, what kind of sick freak are you. Do you hate Muslims that much?

@@ChewyThomson It's the same stupid game that educated leftists have been parroting from Chomsky for 50 years. The Muslims and right-wingers have a narrative reason to hate Jews that is logical and consistent. At the same time, the leftists are too scared to publicly admit to holding any conspiratorial ideas due to that being viewed as the occupation of the stupid. Without the element of worldwide Jewish control and treachery, there is no reason to side with Gaza other than just assuming the darker-skinned people must be right. If you claim to believe in the fundamental reality being displayed to you from a Western education and media consumption then to genuinely be on the side of the Gazans over Isreal is a farcical opinion to have.
