But why bother? If anything else the Pandora papers show how the US banking system itself is basically just a way to launder money. If I’m a Colombian drug dealer why would I go to the lengths of purchasing basically a jpg of Master Shake riding a bike when I could just park my money in an South Dakotan bank and have it accrue interest tax free with no oversight or people questioning it?

I think the deal with the apes was that they were claiming they would make a game later on with the apes people own, like Counter-Strike skins but more. Back in the day (~2018) cryptokitties tried to make something kind of interesting like that. But pretty much everything in the last like two years has been a total scam and it's hilarious.

My understanding is that NFTs are just unique identifiers. The image, video, web address, etc. attached to them is basically like a "seed" that generates the token. The unique token could have a real use in cyberspace but the image itself is purely novelty

you say "image, video" but it's all web addresses. The content itself is not stored on the blockchain, only a pointer to the content. If the website that hosts the content goes down, the content is for all intents and purposes gone. The NFT pointer cannot be updated to reflect a new address. It's such a stupid idea. It's still just content hosted on the cloud, like anything else, all you are buying is a special math URL that is "owned" by you but anyone can use.
