Purpose of Education | Claire Boonstra | TEDxErasmusUniversity

As parents, students, educators, leaders and politicians, we all take decisions when it comes to education. But based on what? On our habits and what we are familiar with, or based on a clear answer on what is (or should be) the purpose of education? Claire Boonstra builds on her own experience as engineer, employee, entrepreneur and now education reformer on how we can bring movement into the education system.
Claire Boonstra has played many different roles in life - as a TU Delft civil engineer, manager at KPN and Unilever, mobile internet expert, winter sports blogger, entrepreneur and technology pioneer with her augmented reality startup Layar.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I very much appreciate that she is trying to define the purpose of education. This needs to be discussed way more often than it is. That she says there are no right answers to the question is almost unforgivable coming from someone who works in education.

Basically Education is a paramount tool against foolishness since it enables one to acquire knowledge and skills inorder to help others understand the content displayed upon by the education.

Education has actually changed right now. There are many available Open Universities, distance education programs, and extension programs at Harvard. Those universities do not need students' attendance anymore; they just do the exams and activities. Also writing essays is more on trend now than the traditional multiple choice and memorization in schools, which truly assess if the student understands the lesson or not. I agree on some parts but saying that the mind download will be available in 2030 is not feasible.

When the title has nothing to do with the topic and ends up a self serving advert. Does no one share knowledge altruisticly anymore? Only subjective opinions... Sorry, hopelessly looking for hope. Some facts, logic, rationality. This now feels like the conjecture channel

wtf do we really need to ask this question? If she is considering the purpose of a state controlled education then the reason is obvious if she is considering the purpose of the American education system in particular then the answer is also obvious but not something that anyone in education wants to be said out loud and if she is asking this question just so that she can give her own answer and hope to spread her own belief system a little wider then she is a good example of why we need to CHANGE the current purpose of education.
