The message of the song is somewhat nostalgic. It is about reminiscing the past with mixed feelings, then finally making a firm decision to let go of what you've been so attached to before of which you know it would be for your own good to detach yourself. Thus, Purple Rain symbolizes a closure of that certain phase in life. That's it. Move on.
