Notice how The Kid plays and looks up at the light. Prince knew how to draw one into a moment, a feeling, a song and make it a memorable experience. Genius. Unique.

Never noticed but seems logical to look up when one is creating. Spiritual too.

I never learned how to read music, but when this came out on VHS; I kept rewinding it like Prince did. The first time I felt like I did something. It was on a Casio keyboard. I just kept going and going. I grew up on real music like this, and it taught me not to settle for just anything when it came to music. My ear is trained thanks to Prince! Love!

I remember telling a friend of mine back in the day, "the most beautiful song I've heard played on the piano was Purple Rain". He literally just a few months ago after watching the movie after 40yrs called me up saying, "Damn, I just heard Pirnce play it, and I wish I heard more".

I want the version on that tape SO BAD!❣ I actually recorded it and mixed together minus the pauses and it sounded MAGNIFICENT at the time! SOMEBODY PLEASE do this and make a video of it!

I have looked for this EXACT clip for years. I had never touched a piano and I remember watching this as a kid and wanting to play this! Only this. I'm finally getting to learn piano and I hope to be able to play this one. The artistry in playing music based on just listening is what made price an icon (amongst other things) thank you beyond words for posting this.

What a movie ....I still remember it from 1984 when I was 14...what a movie!! There's a lot of kids these days that don't even realize Purple Rain is a movie.

I'm 45 and back in the early 8o's I hated Prince with a passion. Fast forward to 1986, and I was watching Purple Rain with my sister and uncle and this is scene I realized he was a genius. He became my favorite artist ever since that period.

This scene says a mountainous amount of unspoken dialogue- you have to be a pretty good actor or it had to really happen to you at one time or other in life to pull this scene off believable like Prince did.

I used to rewind my VHS tape to try to see what keys he was playing lol

I tried to play this melody by ear for 30 years, and accidentally hit the notes trying to play another riff. The majority of Prince's songs are in F or B flat, depending on whether he was composing on the guitar or piano. F is the perfect 5th of B flat and B flat is the perfect 4th of F, which makes those keys share the same notes, except E is flat in B flat. Almost all of Prince's songs use the 1-4-5 chord progression. As do most of the hit songs in Rock, Pop, and R&B. I said all of that to say this...The melody on this version of Purple Rain is 1-4-5-1 starting at F5. Walk it up, walk it back down, then 1-4-5. His genius was in his simplicity. I would find the sheet music to his songs and get pissed because it as never anything fancy. He used a lot of open chords, sus2 and sus4 chords at times, but nothing an average musician can't pick UP. The notes 1-4-5 on any key will always sound good played in any order, as the 1-4-5 chords will. It's the arrangement of these notes and chords that determines if what we hear is the work of a master, or of just another starving artist.

I hired a piano soloist to do it at my uncles funeral .. it was perfect I will also be doing it at my wedding.. prince is a love of my whole family

Can't believe it's been 5 years.

I have this movie on 4K Blu Ray and the previous PR Blu Ray had a terrible audio mix layer. The HDR is a welcome improvement in terms of visual quality. This version is a much noticeable and a wonderful addition for our home theater collection. My theater volume goes into the THX listening levels and at least over 100 dB. ☔️☔️☔️
