He was a once in a century talent, a modern day Mozart. It's a shame he wasn't cherished as the incredible human being he was during his lifetime.

Prince was one of a handful of guitarists who played as if their guitar were a part of their body. It’s a subtle distinction but if you watched Hendrix or Stevie Ray Vaughn the guitar was an extension. There was feeling in their playing that transcended shredding party tricks.

Oh my God, yes!!! I have always told people that you can tell that inside, Prince is singing every note his guitar is making. You can just tell! He is speaking through the guitar, and wow can he emote!

Prince was an amazing gift that many took for granted. He was a generational talent who could (and did) do whatever he wanted, whether it was for the masses or not. Thankfully, he left behind a massive catalog of brilliance that will carry his legacy forever.

Great analysis of his other talents in comparison to other guitarists. Whenever people compare legendary players they usually forget that most guitarists don't finish a solo and sing like an angel or a sex god the way Prince could.

Prince always reinventing ...blues, jazz, pop, ballads ...So much talent in that little package of sexiness 💜

I go back at least 3 times a year(hence this pops up) to watch while my guitar gently weeps. He DID NOT Miss a not on that improve....

Love this performance more than what he pulled off at the Superbowl. The guy was totally connected...the audience is totally out of it but he's acting like he's got a club full of screaming fans. A pro! There is just no one who can pull this off...

Me too... Prince was phenomenal. He teased us with his image(s) but was in truth an absolute master. Songwriter, performer, musician, producer, singer, bandleader par excellence.

Nobody could compare to his talent. He wrote and played all tracks and sang. He was a musical genius.

You're spot on regarding Prince's talent. I've seen him many times with a band like this in the video and his performances have always been amazing, including after playing for two and a half hours then do an after hours show show at a small venue in whatever city he's performing in. The after hours shows would go well into the night. His bands would include musicians like Maceo Parker on sax, Sheila E on percussion, John Blackwell on drums, and Renato Neto on keys. I don't know if you have heard his live cover of the Temptations' Just My Imagination but it is incredible.

Prince stole the show anywere he played. His voice his talent. He could ROCK , jam, boogi he could do it all. So much respect for him. A true entertainer.

Not to mention a great band leader. He heard every note, right or wrong, every move everyone made on that stage, all the while performing his butt off! And was aware of sound and lighting as well...would shut it down in a New York minute if it wasn't right...would apologize to the audience.. guide the sound man thru a spontaneous sound check, or lighting thru it til they got it right...then pick it right back up! Its up for debate whether the sound or lighting crews had jobs the next day, lol. Phenomenal performer.

The amount of people who tried to write him off and made fun of Prince because of the high heels and make up etc back in the day, who then either saw him in concert or videos of him live, got put in deep check, was insane. Respected musicians from various genres KNOW and knew back then how good Prince was.

Miles Davis called him a genius, Elton John said he was the best live performer he'd ever seen, he was Brian Eno's favourite producer, Stevie Wonder called him the Emperor of pop, George Clinton called him the epitome of a pop star, Eric Clapton credits him for giving him renewed faith in music after being depressed about its state at the time (wrote Holy Mother after seeing Purple Rain), Robert Plant said he'd be intimidated to perform with him (great you tube interview on this).... and on and on.

Who can touch Prince ? The man is just a musical genius .

This is a press conference before his Superbowl performance. Awesome!!! If you saw his Superbowl performance you would go mental. He rocked the place!!!

This was the press conference before the Superbowl when he performed the halftime show. The press was there to ask questions. They were totally surprised to get a concert. I think they were trying to be professional and stayed seated. I remember this and thought it was awesome and hilarious.

I think one of the greatest things about Prince's guitar playing is that he was self taught. He also played like a dozen other instruments.

To me, Prince is (maybe) the only person I would even imagine ranking alongside Frank Zappa. Multi-instrumentalists, iconoclastic, tremendously prolific, polarizing culture figures. A tragedy they are both gone.

Prince's talent never ceases to amaze me, during the 80's and 90's his dancing was phenomenal and something else he doesn't get credit for. I think he must have been seriously injured around 2000 which put an end to it. He's a great band leader & arranger also.

I second that. I was blessed to see him in St Paul, MN on December 26, 1984 (Purple Rain tour ...). His being from Minneapolis prompted him to open with a heartfelt, "I am SO glad to be home for Christmas and to be spending it with all of you !" after which he put on a FABULOUS high-energy show that lasted more than 3 hours. Sheila E and Morris Day and the Time were also there and he was a consummate performer and host. He gave it all on stage and came out for not one, not two, but THREE encores. It was a legendary concert and I am blessed to have been there. #Purplereign4ever

Dude, Prince's vibrato is never out of control!!! I appreciate you opinion, though, and love that you understand Prince as an overall artist.

I was lucky enough to have a cousin who thought Prince was the greatest, it was through him, that I learned how much talent Prince had. Until then I did not know know Prince did more than play guitar and sing. I never got to see Prince perform live, but consider myself fortunate to of been a fan while he was alive.

If you think Prince is out of control, it’s because that’s what he wanted you to hear

Merry Christmas and yes, he played over 20 instruments but guitar was his primary. These press people never appreciated what a show Prince gave them. Thank you for giving him the respect. 💜🕊

This was the press conference for the night before Superbowl. They were all journalists apparently. Prince says at the start of the video something like " contrary to popular belief that I don't take interviews , does anyone have any questions?" He looks around straight faced for questions. The moment a question pops up he cuts them off and starts playing. Prince's music always spoke for him. A few of them got up to jam but Prince lit a fire under them they weren't expecting. They did applaud vigorously at the end though. Small consolation. I like the way you smile genuinely at his performance skills and provide great analysis. Yes he was one of a kind we will never forget.

Wings. I did not appreciate his skill until he passed away, which is very unfortunate for me and countless other fans who found the same amazingness that was Prince. He was a perfectionist who could legit command a crowd. Underrated for by those who were blinded by his stage persona and did not see his actual skill. The man killed it every time. He has my eternal respect as a musician. Good call on putting him on display sir. Truly one of the best shredding front men. Wings, you never disappoint. Never. Cheers to you and your neverending quest to expose the masses to string work from the best 😍😍😍

I am also guilty as charged... I knew he was a great frontman made good music when I was in teenage years, but for some unexplainable reasons, just never get around to have paid close attention on what he has done until recently... and until he passed away. At least now I got to appreciate more and more of the what a multi-talented performer is about.. Prince it is. RIP

Prince was amazing on several levels, musician, singer, dancer, and composition and finally as a showman/entertainer!

WOW, I did not expect what I always expect from Prince. Just an amazing guitarist. absolutely amazing. one short clip says and shows just how good he really was, then again we already knew what a great artist he was. a huge loss for the music world.

Prince was such a rabbit hole.... as soon as I thought I had anything about that guy pegged, there was another dimension.... always blown away by his guitar playing. And THAT was just scratching the surface, no matter how blown away....

I've never seen this, so thank you. Prince could hot dog, for sure, but, he always gave his band and other musicians their due. As for a personal behavior, from what we all hear, Prince was never a dick unless people deserved it. His put down compilations are some of the best comedy on the net. I'm glad he's well remembered for being a good dude as well as a genius musician.

His vocalists behind him are busting out some Tina Turner moves! Love it!!! Lodie

Yes! He created a number of gorgeous piano compositions and played that instrument rather masterfully as well.

Prince always has style and dressed to the 9s.

One of the few times I cried when a performer died. Prince could do any genre, and he was multi talented. He could adapt his vocals to make the sound he wanted.....and above all he was a performer and one who bucked the music industry. He was a generous soul, who never bloated his "fame"! ❤️❤️❤️ ""nothing compares to you" amazing writer as well....

You really nailed him and all he could do so much more than any other artist EVER! People who don't get it should go away. He's EPIC .

Well I am just so proud that you have acknowledged Prince in this way today. I get so fed up with people trying to compare prince to such as Michael Jackson? Michael Jackson couldn’t play an eighth of the instruments that Prince can play! I would argue that in every category Prince surpasses most artist in ability, and talent. One of the ways that we know this is he is always acknowledged as genius by other artists. I’ve made the comment to a friend of mine who plays drums, bass, has his own recording label that Prince was under rated. He said well LOL not really with true artists. He says that true artists really know that Prince was a genius in so many ways and as a matter of fact a friend of his was playing with Prince up to his death. It may be harder for the average person to understand, but Princes ability....at a virtuoso level.... to write, play, sing, produce, DANCE and EXECUTE by himself..... remains untouchable. U have to also consider he was homeless and without familial support at 11?! Self taught musician and vocalist. The circumstances he managed to excel in destroy most.

This was supposed to be a press conference before the show, not a show! The crowd was expecting Prince to speak, not perform. He didn't give a shit. Prince was a free spirit..very evolved. Btw...try dancing, singing and playing guitar while directing your band. Prince was a diva in the sense that he was PRIVATE and the media hated their lack of access to him. He wasn't a guitarist, he was a musician.

Prince's stage presence and charisma was undeniable even when he was young. As for why he was always an underrated guitar player is a combination of things: one he didn't really focus on it in comparison to songwriting and stage performances and his live guitarist Wendy Melvoin was amazing to watch live. Not hard to see why Prince made her a regular edition to his band Revolution. The man knew talent.

Just getting into your channel. You are definitely knowledgeable about music. As for this performance it was a press conference not his actual Super Bowl halftime performance which if you have not seen it it's a must watch. He did a 13 minute concert in a rain storm in Miami and it was absolutely epic. Anyway, I'm a lifelong Prince fan. I was blessed to see Prince live 8 times, I saw him play drums, percussion, piano, synthesizer, bass and of course guitar. Prince to me was music. He didn't really have a genre. Prince did Rock, Pop, Jazz, Rap, Funk, R&B, Swing and a couple tracks I consider Country. He was genre-less. He's the greatest live artist to ever walk the Earth at least in my 50 years on this planet. His concerts were real music by real musician's. He wrote, produced and the man even made movies. He's the only person to my knowledge to play both Batman & The Joker. 😂 Prince is the most one man band to ever. Anyway, I've rambled enough. I just want to end this by saying Prince made 39 albums before his death. If any of you ever want to explore his music more there's plenty of it. Please enjoy your experience.... ✌

Here’s what people need 2 understand, you have amazing rock artists, hip hop artists, jazz, blues, country, funk, etc. you have legends in all fields! But the reason why Prince was so unique was because he could perform and create EVERY genre. Any person who has listened to all his albums knows that Prince IS music. He’s even a great rapper. Just coming across your channel. Really like the way you analyze your videos. Being a huge Prince fan since his pre-purple rain days, it’s great that people like you are pointing out what so many took for granted for so many years - He is in his own category and should really never be considered just a guitarist, singer, songwriter, etc. I have a lot of love fir many musicians but this guy’s abilities were otherworldly without question. And I am still learning about his abilities abs he has been gone for almost 5 years. Crazy.

This brings back memories of Chuck Berry playing "Johnny Be Good" when my dad brought me to my 1st rock concert in July 1964 when I was 7.

Its kind of like Prince is saying to the journalist: Shut up and listen for a change! Awesome.

God he just oooozed talent!!! One of the most underrated guitar players ever. He could play any instrument basically and extremely well. I think he’s one of the best talents of my lifetime. Sad he’s gone. Happy Holidays Fil!!!

Because Prince was just musically talented and also worked very hard in every aspect of producing music, even though he may not be the most technically top guitarists, it is his ability to take that music in his head and drive the guitar sound along with everything going around him. You could say he was one of the greatest guitarists because he knew how to incorporate that guitar into whatever piece he was playing.

An absolute genius!! I was privileged to see Prince during the Gold tour and he kicked ass on guitar - I have seen Vai, Satch (G3) and many 'great' rock guitarists but few could hold their own against Prince - let alone all the other instruments he played. I think he gets overlooked as a 'guitarist' because not every song he does is particularly guitar focussed with soaring solo's and being more 'pop' hasn't helped either but Prince could play it all - rock, soul, funk, jazz, pop, blues etc and not just limited to guitar either. RIP Prince, the Genius dearly beloved and greatly missed!

He was a God given talent who will be missed for generations to come.

I honestly literally love how you talk about prince as an artist, and as a musician and his multifaceted talent as you are discovering it…. Us old heads have known this, and been enamored with his ability for literally decades,… And I absolutely love that people of your generation and younger are now also discovering this.

I've said it before. .. Until I was "dragged " into going with my girlfriend to see Prince in 88 I had no clue this man could play this good.. Over the years I've heard him take many many classic jams and make them his own.. to see him steal the show watch him playing lead on Gnarls Barclay live Crazy

I concur with FIl. That's the gist of it for me, too. He plays not "only" pop. There are videos where he plays jazz in Montreux, or masterly picking on acoustic guitar, he plays blues as seen here, and how he does it all does not put him to shame among the best in these areas. An amazing person, may be somewhat overlooked in his seriousness because of his showy side.

Rehearsal for the Superbowl performance...one of the best Superbowl Halftime Shows in history and likely the only real live performance...the people in attendance are reporters,who thought they could ask questions and Prince shut that down right away.

Totally agree, I would not say under rated as musicians know how good he was, more like over looked. He was a true genius and know matter how good you are on guitar you could learn alot, he really pushed the boundries. As always perfect analysis

Well I've only known about your channel for a few weeks, but that hasn't stopped me from watching a whole bunch of your videos. I love that you talk about Roy Clark and Glen Campbell with the same passion as Gary Moore and SRV. From classical to bluegrass, from funk to metal, your knowledge and enthusiasm has almost certainly brought new appreciation for and interest in diverse musical genres to thousands of people who might not otherwise seek them out. But the clincher, the reason I am commenting, is something you said in this video. "There's no 'better' in art, it's all subjective." Yes! Exactly! That's what's brilliant about art. I agree with your comments about Prince; underrated because he was just so good at everything. While I was watching this video, I was thinking "He also picked those dancers, that horn player, that drummer. He told them where to stand and taught them the arrangement. Probably picked out the girls' dresses and directed the lighting, too. Then, likely on short notice, got them all tight and ready to put on a professional show". The man was a genius. Thanks for these great videos!

I am sorry, but I completely do not understand these complaints that Prince was "underrated". The guy who, years before his death, broke up all contacts with record labels, with showbusiness and the media, thus limiting the possibilities of access to his work to the mimimum. A guy whose heirs still block access to the so many of recordings he made in his studio. Maybe he just wanted to be "underappreciated"?

So true. Everything about it and as Fil explains, Prince was so much out there, so talented and "in your face" that he could easily be overlooked by mainstream people as an entertainer but he had the whole package. The fact that he was quite short and an excellent basket player were two things he had to overcome, also a troubling relationship with his dad and overall difficult childhood. He was a complex person with extraordinary abilities. Many many layers of talent. A true Gemini and of course more than just that but his Gemini talented side was already a big thing. Prince is the best! I miss him dearly! I truly think he has to be one of the best musicians in the world. The way he makes people feel when u go to a concert is indescribable. He truly had the whole package and more!💜💜💜💜

This was and is one of my favorite musicians. I wore 2 albums out! And I lived learning this with a friend of mine...what a talented man...again a poet! I saw them once! Wish I had seen him more...like I said I loved his concerts...what a master showman... and he mastered the flute! Thank u Phil for bringing back beautiful times!

I love this guys face as he watches the videos. He has true appreciation and is enjoying the playing deeply. I find that deeply satisfying. Wonderful.

I never thought of it that way you are pretty sharp he does it all singing writing lyrics composing guitar licks the whole enchilada Prince was a one-man band I'll be watching him more closely I saw him do that show playing as my guitar Gently Weeps to honor George Harrison and he nailed it thanks Phil excellent review of a great artists talents

Prince was the music he became the music there's a few who can do this they don't just play & sing the music they feel it!

Prince was just beyond description. Still is and always will be

I have seen Prince play live 3 times in my live. My only regret is that I didn't see more concerts of Prince.

If I'm not mistaken and my memory serves me correctly, this was supposed to be a press conference regarding Prince's appearance at the Super Bowl and those in attendance were under the impression they were going to be conducting a formal "interview' with him, but Prince had something else in mind. To my ears, the further Prince got into his career, the more his guitar skills evolved and came to the forefront in his music, to the point where his prowess on the guitar of undeniable and people finally started to take notice of how good he was.

Not true - his guitar was a part of his music from the beginning. Listen to the intro to When Doves Cry, the rockabily of Let's Go Crazy, the funk in Kiss, the blues of Cream. His guitar was always there. That said, I think he was at his zenith in 1988 or even 1994. After that, he came back to Earth - as much as Prince could ;)

Agree. It wasn't until the Purple Rain soundtrack that Prince really began to show off his guitar playing skills. This was when he began moving away from the funk-laden sound that defined his early career and heading in a more pop-oriented direction.

@@RockyScorcese I was just about to reply the same thing. Go back before the "hits" to Bambi, and anyone should be able to see that it was always there. That song shreds. Or, dare I say, try giving a listen to the guitar solo in "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad." The kid was 19 when he recorded that shit.

I thought I saw every Prince performance on KZread! He is my favourite artist of all time! 💜 Thank You!

Have you seen Empty Room at the Montreux Jazz Festival 2009? That's right up there. They keep taking it down on here though!!

ruddock7 I concur Empty Room is right there. All of his Montreiux work is just mind blowing.

Pure genius by Prince. He was so amazing! Often wonder what we missed with his passing.

The press conference performance was an indication of what to expect at the super bowl performance! What a unique and totally innovative way in which to present at a press conference!

No people just didn't want too see how much raw skill prince had due to image but that was obvious from word go / R I P PRINCE

I agree with everything you said here Fil! Prince was a force to be reckoned with and commanded a performance! His artistry is very well missed.

Prince is the best musicien, who play 29 instruments like this (nobody) produced, composed, arranged etc By Prince. Prince is maybe special (yes by his music) he's a genius. Prince is music.😉

Prince is singing,playing the guitar,and doing a little dance but hasn’t missed a note.😱

I absolutely love Prince ❤️ I love guitarists, and in my opinion the best when it comes to versatility and ability.... And then to be such a great talent in all the other areas... It broke my heart when he died because there were so many memories from my youth involving Prince... A special piece of my youth went with him.... Gone to soon... So glad to see how much you appreciate his talent... I've been laughed at for saying he's my guitar hero... And thank you for all the lovely things you said 😊

love this, you realy hit the nail with what you say....prince did so many things that its amazing that he could be so good on the guitar...sure there are some TOP players that are better...but for me he is still in the top 50 and thats quite amazing.

Very thorough and precisely on point Fil. I have never seen anyone breakdown and analyze a performance better than you my friend. Job well done Sir. I would love to hear you critique the Funk Bros. The Motown house band. Great video Fil. ROCK!!!

I have been a Prince fan since 1st album. I have seen him in concert a least 4 times. You always got more then your monies worth with him. I took my daughter to see him for her 16th birthday, her reply to was "Daddy I really don't like Prince". After the concert she was a changed person, Daddy I didn't know Prince was so bad!!!. Oh and we had first row seat. She is now 29. She called me when he passed, I told he to stop playing with me. Please listen to THE TIME's song 777-9311, Prince playing all the instruments and the solo is out of this world. Also Eddie Hazel Maggot Brain. Any solo by Ernie Isley of the Isley Brothers.
