Is is 3 hours a day all at once or twice a day?

As someone that has 5 dogs I've also learned to teach mine an 'enough' command so all play instantly stops. When my 8 month chocolate lab and my 16 month pit/mastiff are romping and playing some folks would consider it a dog fight just from the noise and bodies flying. They love it and I let them go at it with the occasional 'enough' so they stop for a minute and start again. I didn't teach them 'enough' for their sake...I taught it for when they are interacting with couch potato dogs that have never been allowed to play rough and might not take kindly to their play style

I relate to all this, especially the kids part! 😂 I grew up playing in the woods, no parents in sight for miles. Free time for hours and hours in the summer and after school. We roamed kinda like these pups. That was the 70s though. No phones. No laptops on us.

Thank you! This is a constant discussion here in Sweden, people are obsessed with limiting puppies physical activity believing it will cause impairs and damage to their hips. I've done plenty of research to figure out where this idea comes from and found virtually zero research that supports it. At the same time, obesity and other diseases related to insuffiecent exercise is basically exploding.

It's excessive hard impact play we avoid. Americans have this idea playing with a dog for 1 hour straight doing ball or frisbee is normal and healthy, especially after doing nothing all day. See Dr Dobias, Dr karen Becker, Kikopup and others, its based on their experience which is extensive and worldwide. We here walk the dog several times, puppies play and follow us all day, frisbee, ball and tug are used but not to excess and lots of small increments, it makes for better learning. In fact the first 1 to 2 weeks i am short leashed to them all day to remind us to train and play and acclimate initially to kmow each others habits. They are released throughout the day, i have even done this with elder dogs and by doing that their recall is better even in some of my wacky rescue dogs. I have a cattle dog, super strong and fast so keeping her from doing crazy things was not easy, even with that She has hurt herself. She is great as my service dog, she pushes me to move to do my therapy and for her it's play time. She would move til she drops but that is not good so we also exhaust her brain, she's a real smartie.

What experience are you speaking of? If we are talking in terms of world wide norms, only in first world countries is over exercise a concern. You should take a close look at the evidence people provide in terms of exercising puppies.

@@StonnieDennislong term professional veterinarians and the injuries they deal with. Again its people not doing anything all day with their pups and run them in the ground for 1 hour and then they wonder why puppy is lame. Dogs gotta run and play all day as pups there is a lot for them to learn.

Charlotte will remember her days following Dad around forever. My Dad was my hero. It's a Dad and his daughter thing. I went where Dad went and I remember those times fondly. Except the time he let me try Coppenhagen.

I remember in 2012 on New Years Day we adopted a 4 year old coonhound. I could not believe her energy level. Three weeks later that breed was accepted by the AKC. At the Westminster Show a few weeks after that, the Treeing Walker Coonhound was featured because it was the first time that one had been in the show. They interviewed a lady who had a brace of coonhounds in western Kentucky, she had a big horse farm. She said “A lot of people say coonhounds are hard to train, but I find that if you hunt them every night between midnight and five or six in the morning, they’re fine!”

You're spot on! I have 4 litter mates, I always let them play first before working them. This video makes so much sense on so many different levels. This is a great video to watch if you were interested in working or already do work in a doggy day care setting. Understanding dog behavior and how certain dog breeds or certain age groups play and interact with each other is so important.

I’ve worked at several different doggy daycare facilities. In this video would’ve been a really good video for my coworkers to watch. So they could understand what proper playtime looks like. And understand how puppies and dogs play. I truly agree with Stonnie, on dog training is an art. I can handle a group of dogs pretty well but trying to train someone who is not familiar with working a group of dogs is a little difficult. There’s only so much you could teach someone using words. It’s trial and error and it really is an art it takes time to learn and understand.

Couldn't agree more. Got a new Bernedoodle (4 months now) - she's also part Maremma sheepdog on her mother's side - and she loves our cold Ontario winters. She tolerates the cold (-15C today, January 31) better than the glove fingers on our leash hands do and has a big say - along with our fingers - in deciding how much exercise she gets. She's a retirement project for us so she's not at all deprived of outdoor time. And sure enough, a tired dog is a good (and happy) dog!

Zoomies, the cats get them too. In fact, I had a friend that had all her cats and dogs run through the house and then outside and then back in. It was hysterical and so true she just did not exercise them enough so they did it themselves. I do get my cattle dog can be crazy and decide to run on fumes, I make her calm down before she comes in or hang on the deck until the fresh air calms her down. I make her run circles around various things in different directions while I walk, it is a great brain reliever for both of us, lol We do exercise, we get out 3-4 times a day but bad weather we have to be creative inside. Great video! I love watching all the dogs interacting. As a first time dog owner, this helps me understand what normal dog play looks like. This method of exercise makes so much sense as they are given the space and time to self regulate. I think that forcing a dog to run on concrete at a human set pace can cause injuries. Great video. I think zoomies are more dangerous for my lab puppy than just playing outside in the snow. Seeing him zoom on a tile floor makes me nervous. Just go out and run and play. He rips up some grass to let me know he’s done and time to go in.

exceptional video, a bit humbling. I wish she had more dog friends but genuinely anytime I see a dog at the park, I make sure we go over there and she gets the chance the meet new dogs. and then we note it in our journal, we joke because we remember the dogs names better than the owners... still need to work on that. One of your videos you spoke about the stimulation scale-- and I always remind my gf and others that are around her-- no treat, no animal, no kid, no person(not even my gf and I) will take her attention away from other dogs. She was born to be with other dogs, she is always so happy when she can play with other dogs, no matter the breed/behavior from the other dog, weather its playful or kind of wrestling- she loves it all. i see the love for lab so much when isee her interact with dogs and then humans, such a natural instinct to handle it properly it seems like.

It’s funny that I came across this video today. I’ve been taking my 4 month black lab out on outdoor adventures almost everyday. I was talking to the lady at our local pet store and she was saying that he should not go hiking or running more that 10-15 minutes. And I’m not supposed to let him jump off or over anything even couch height. She said it can mess up their joints and bones later and interfere with the proper development of their growth plates. So I’ve been setting a timer for 15 minutes in for an out door hike and then 15 minutes back for a total of 30… we live in the high desert so he can be off leash for the majority.

Stonnie firstly thank you for your service to all dog owners. Please advise, I have a 4 month old working lab and are a novice dog owner. I am very active and want to give my dog every possibility to being the fittest it can be but I’m concerned about the negative and almost overwhelming info on avoiding long walks and uphill walking with a pup. I live in a rural suburb and was wanting advice on how long a day can my pup be exercised/walked safely without risk of damaging joints etc Thanks Nick

Rationing exercise and environmental socialization during the most important stages of a dog's mental and physical development in order to maybe prevent joint problems late in life seems like missing the forest for the trees. Most vets don't deal with behavior issues, anyway. From a personal perspective, I would not have as rich of a bond with my current best bud if we waited until 6 months from now (when he'll be 18 months) to start doing off-leash forest adventures, retrieval training, and dog park / day care socialization. The amount of communication and mutual trust required to do those successfully would be a lot more difficult to develop once other patterns of behavior have been established and neuroplasticity diminishes.

Hi Stonnie! Love your videos, just wondering if these methods regarding exercise apply to breeds prones to hip problems? I'm getting a GSD/Rottweiler cross tomorrow and I've heard differing opinions about how much to exercise them, is it true they are more fragile as pups compared to other breeds?

My pup is 5.5 months old but we've been doing 1 hour off-leashed exercise at a giant dog park lately (acres of land). I feel really fortunate that we have only met amazing dogs there-- younger dogs that play with my guy, as well as older dogs that tell him they aren't interested. I notice he's just ready to lay down afterwards and rest. But I've had people accuse me of doing too much, repeating the #months x 5 mins exercise formula. And they only mean for walks on a leash, which is, as you say, totally different from off-leash play!

I appreciate that he lets the whippersnapppers pretty much work things out among themselves, but draws the line on if they try to mess with the two old ladies.

And it’s a good thing that Labs do quickly scrub up beautifully after a play sesh, because you are gonna need your strength to groom yourself up to a moderately mud-free state, post-play. It’s a bit of a trade off either way, just saying 😉

That looks so fun for the pups. My guy has 2 torn ccl’s and a meniscus so I miss letting him run and play and pee on his own.

Hey Stonnie. Greetings from Oz. My wife and I love your vids. Trawling through your old stuff, it's all gold. Question: We're getting our lab pup this Saturday. We've heard about parvo etc, and how you shouldn't take your puppy out in public parks in case of infection. What are your thoughts? Do you take your puppies out to a public park before all their shots after 14-16 weeks? Appreciate your advice!

They should be out from 8 weeks. 8-16 weeks has been shown to be critical in puppy socialisation. It's not just behaviour but proven by science. It's no longer recommended to wait until after shots as the risks of parvo etc are much less than the risks of dogs being given to shelters because of poor socialisation. Do as much positive socialisation as possible/ (not just exposure to everyrhing). Make sure the dog is having positive experiences in as many different environments. That doesn't mean the dog needs to interact with everything where you can't control everyrhing, just being in the environment and you giving treats/kibble is enough. Michael Ellis has some good videos on it. Stonnie is great too of course.

Thanks Stonnie! What are your exercise recommendations for owners of only one dog? I exercise my dog twice day using a variety of methods throughout the week. She gets off leash free runs, bike runs, treadmill runs, backpack walks, agility walks (similar to your small challenge confidence course), regular walks, and strength and conditioning workouts. I asked for your ideasfor guys with one dog so I can add to my regimen.

I have an Am. Bulldog/Boxer mix puppy, 3 months old and I can tell by your video that for sure she doesn't get enough exercise! Stonnie I live in the western mountains of Maine and we still have tons of snow! Will her legs/feet be bothered by the cold of the snow? I don't know what to do, clearly she needs more exercise. There has been times, because she is little, that she was shaken due to the cold, and she wears a sweater. What would you do in all the snow? I love your videos, I have learned so much especially from this one, thank you.......Loved watching Charlotte with the older dog, she was protecting him.

Boxers are very temperature sensitive, not so sure about am bulldogs. So keeping that in mind, try to keep a coat on your dog, even boots if you can, when taking him out in the cold.

I love your videos and common sense advice. I have a 9 month old lab that we hike off leash every day between 3-5 miles. I am a runner and mountain biker. At what age assuming proper conditioning will she be able to run on pavement and mountain bike on trails. I typically run 7 miles and mountain bike 10-15 miles. My last dog did these activities with me his whole life. What age can Kiva run and mountain bike with me? Thanks!

Damn, I wanted to say 18 months until dogs can join our bike-rides, but with all the bullshit surrounding exercise myths I'm not sure anymore.

Hi Stonnie I have 2 lab sibling pups 12 weeks old and I run and play soccer and they have there tongue out and I do some of your training after .We get into the house and only about 10 min rest and they start the zoomies in the house.How can I not be giving them enough exercise? Do you have any corrections of what I am doing wrong?

how about dogs that struggle w. settling? I could be wrong but it seems like my dane puppy gets way overtired and way overstimulated. she's really well behaved (for a puppy..lol) until the evening time for the most part. She will start getting crazy and when she does she gets very bitey and kind of out of control tbh. I'm pretty certain she's tired and not under-exercised bc we do play and train/walk many times during the day, esp working from home. Once she gets this way (its usually after a long play session) I try to round her up. Once I finally get her in the crate she passes right out without fuss... but she truly can't seem to calm down outside of the crate when theres lots of toys and things to do at night. she's 14 weeks right now, I remember my last dane puppy getting wound up from time to time but she had no trouble passing out lol. is this something she may grow out of or something I am probably doing wrong?

A lot of trainers seem to go more towards trying to create a neutral dog. E.G a dog that is not interested so much in other dogs. What's your feeling on this Stonnie? Is there a risk with all the play that they enjoy it so much that it becomes a problem and they want to play with every dog they meet off leash.

When my Malinois mutt was 2 - 4 she'd chase a frisbee into the water and back for 3 hours, and then I had to give up. 15 min if there wasn't fresh water to jump in. They can go insanely far when they're hydrated and cooled.

Stonnie, Can you please comment on the issue of puppy exercise and parvo. An eight week mini-goolden puppy will be arriving to a fourth floor San Francisco apartment (rickety old elevator) soon. The breeder says - thirty minutes exercise max and keep inside (parvo concern) for the next four weeks until the pup has his full vaccination. There is a well used large dog park across the street so there are lots of dogs walking outside the apt. as well as people who have walked through the dog park. Would love to have your space but given this situation, would your recommend the puppy stay inside for four weeks with pee pee pad training? You'll probably laugh but SF residents often put pups in a baby carriage for the four weeks before they have immunity for parvo so they can get acclimatized to city sounds? Could you do a video or add some comments for we city folk? Really enjoy your videos! Thanks for putting all this great information out for us!

I’m glad I’m not the only one in that position. I have a 9 week old German shepherd that isn’t fully vaccinated for parvo yet. We can’t do group play or go anywhere other dogs have been. My breeder told me this as well as my vet. We have a very hard time getting enough exercise. We bare the brunt of the dogs aggression for lack of exercise. We do go on car rides and try to run in the small area I have.

Wow i went against all dogma and allowed pup lharkie to knacker himself out from super early in life.. He's 21 months now and i never had him chew on anything he shouldn't and no health issues or behaviour issues ive been low key feeling guilty about potential damage i may have caused even though theresnothing wrong with him!! Lol.. Thanks for lifting that 💕

I have a question, if I have a solo puppy of a medium-sized breed, In what age would you recommend it to meet and play with other dogs? What kinds of dogs should it be introduced to? Many different or just one or two? Is it best if it is only dogs that are used to playing with other dogs? Various ages? Great video, I really appreciate your videos very much.

Here’s some more common sense: your puppy sleeps/rests way more than it exercises per day. Guess what happens when they are resting? Their little bodies are recovering and growing. So yeah, your pup may ‘exercise’ for 2 hours a day but also means they are resting for 22 hours.

Our large family is ready and willing to exercise our 12 week old BMD, who seems content to sit on the grass chewing sticks! We are very eager to get her started going on walks, playing in our large yard, etc. Is there anything we can do to get her more interested in physical activity and play?

They only need as much exercise as they need; don't sweat it. If you are out and about and he just likes lounging, then take a deep breath and long with her!

By far the best common sense pertaining to dog raising and training channel! These so called guidelines to vaccinate dogs to the teeth, deworm, fleece "preventatives" every month, don't over exercise, feed them dog "food" etc etc and the pets are the sickest known to history!

A school that got rid of recess? What kind of place is that?! Kids need to play.

Hey Stonie! What should I do with my 2yr old lab that has lost interest in playing with other dogs? She is still well behaved with them but just walks away/ignores them even when she is full of energy. I take her to a park and she’ll be in a section with 25 dogs barking at the gate to go play fetch by herself in a different section. She used to love playing chase and I’m just confused

That’s perfectly normal; don’t sweat it. Dogs are just like people, as they mature they need less activity and social time.

@@spankey88 we raw fed and did weekly weighing at home. Online for each breed you can find a week by week list of what to expect in growth and development. So if it strays one can get help. Also knowing the parents info is helpful. Piece of advice a veterinarian gave me-raw fed will be shorter stickier and stronger vs kibble fed, something to consider especially with larger breed and keep them strong. Bon apetit doggies.Prayers to the journey.

Stonnie I have a 11 weeks lab, she gets lots of exercise. We are. A very active family but at night about 7 she goes nuts, like super bitty and not really listening. She seems restless, in my no at all experience. Do you think she is over tired or maybe she needs another walk to take that away? Any thoughts.. 🙏🙏

Ilsa, It really is an individual dog thing. Think of how dogs and babies are alike. Sometimes they have a period of the day where they are restless. My GSD still gets this way about 7:30 each evening. (she's a year old). I go down the list, are you hungry, need to go potty, are you over tired? I learned that sometimes she hit a growth spurt and needed a small meal. Sometimes she wants to go outside and play with the humans rather than my other dog & sometimes she needed a nap. In the end, I figured out that her natural biorythems and mine just don't line up. She wants to go to bed at 7:30 each night and get up early. I am the opposite. She won't go to bed without me or leave the bedroom if I am still in bed.After I let her out in the morning, She will go out/come in with my guys. Enjoy your puppy.

You really only need to make sure the dogs get a lot of exposure when they are young to prevent problems in adulthood. Once you have a good base, then you can live your life without worrying about what may happen if crazy situations pop up.

Is there ever a time when the young dogs are really bothering an older dog that you intervene? or do you always let the older dog do the correcting? I have an 11 year old now and it really bothers me (and him) when young dogs we meet on our forest hikes don't recognize any signals he's putting out there that he wants to be left alone and they continue to jump all over him.. erika I had an 11 yo large dog have his leg stress fractured by young dog. One year healing journey and thousands $. I do wonder how fast to intervene. I am very rude to people these days in advance

5 mins per monthly age is recommended in the UK so a 3 month pup can have 15min twice a day and so on, some can be off leash for a small amount but no chasing a ball or roughhousing with an older dog. Smaller the dog, less of a problem but if you have Mastiff breeds like me no way would you let them in this situation, hips, elbows and cruciates would all be a problem, after 18 months do as much as possible, not a problem but this every day would ensure your large breed pup grows up to be plagued with joint problems later in life

helene rooney So your position is that the experience you have raising a handful of dogs outweighs my experience raising thousands combined with documented historical norms? That does not seem to be a very logical position. How would you characterize your personal daily exercise regimen?

@@StonnieDennis You have no idea how many dogs I have raised or bred. You obviously have the internet, use it, see how dangerous over exercising can be, have a little look at Jason Corey he does a great vid on how to raise a Cane Corso pup and he's right, no stairs, no jumping out of cars, no rough housing, if anyone can actually be bothered to look it is all there...Came across your vid by accident but it's incorrect and potentially harmful to large breed pups, is all

helene rooney I have looked for well designed studies; I can’t find any. You said you have access to one, so please post if for all of us to see. Now as far as talking about restricted activities for puppies, let’s be honest, if one is breeding puppies that can’t exercise without injury then it’s time to put an end to that line.

Nobody said fun wasn't dangerous. That's funny!

I wish I had even half as much energy as that Poodle.

The old labs are done ❤️. I have a Boston terrier puppy that “terrorizes” my older boxer. You know these dogs, but I don’t trust dog parks.

This was the first video I saw a Poodle at your place.

We love Poodles! They may be fancy to keep clean, but every ounce is worth it to me. An underrated sportsman.

My Dutch 10wk gets second wind. Hard to tell until he starts biting my legs. I feel this is human problem not puppy

It looks like you're mostly training city dawgs, who don't know anything about the outdoor environment other than pavements. Am I wrong?

Danny McCloggie I rarely have dogs from actual urban areas. I did have one from Manhattan last year, but the owners spend lots of time at a beach house in Florida.

@@StonnieDennis I take it that's why they send their dogs to you, to experience different environments and how to behave in them? I live on the edge of a small town in Scotland and it takes literally minutes to be in the woods and hills and my 3 month old Hovawart already has been numerous times exploring it and at 12 weeks old went into a creek (we call it a burn) all by himself. I guess not every dog is that fortunate to have that possibility on a daily basis. Thanks for your reply mate, " I appreciate that" ! ;-)

i overtrain my puppy if anything.

We call it manic man. Lol

To put it into a little perspective, would you expect your 2yr old toddler to do the same amount of exercise as your 15yr old? That's the difference between your puppy and year old dog...go figure, not rocket science is it...

What about your kid? Maybe involve her?

That's definitely the biggest Poodle I've seen .

It's a standard Poodle. That's how big they get. You're probably used to seeing toy and miniature size poodles as they are more commonly kept by folks who like Poodles.
