How Hiking Helps A Goldendoodle Overcome Fear, Anxiety, and Aggression

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Today Uncle Stonnie is demonstrating how hiking can help a Goldendoodle overcome fear, anxiety, and aggression. Although Stonnie is demonstrating with this cute Goldendoodle puppy, Ruby, the same basic advice holds true for most breeds and types.
We hope you guys enjoy!

    I go on many walks like this with my lab and lab retriever mix. I love how they wait and look back for me once they get out a ways. IF they get too far on occasion I call them all the way back, congradulate them and off we go again. But they almost always are fairly close. I love just watching them have fun.

    Please do research, doodles are unethically bred. There are great ethical alternatives like Spanish Water Dogs (They look identical to doodles but they're purebred) or Lagotto Romagnolos (They also look like doodles but are smaller), or a soft coated Wheaton Terrier (They look like goldendoodles but are softer)

    @bby cherub • I chose this dog because of her personality, and she is calm. I had a GD before. I don't understand what you mean by unethical. There are many pure bred dogs that are poorly bred. I'm not concerned about the fact that she is a GD, rather temperament and starting behavior. I will train her from here. She is a sweet dog.

    Stonnie what to you suggest for those who live in a urban/suburban area and don't have a built in adventure world? Most dog parks are just small grass/mud fields with a fence around it. And usually hiking trails have leash laws. I am fortunate I live close enough to an open leash free park that is trails/woods/water so I could take my dog on an adventure when he was younger. But many folks don't have that option. As always I enjoy you videos. Time to take the old man for a walk.

  • @kldawson53

    @kldawson53

    Yup. Strict leash laws where I am and dog parks here are tiny and gross. Luckily the app Sniffspot came around so us city folks can "rent" very large yards on the outskirts of town. Now, getting other dog owners to participate is the real challenge. We struggled so hard to find play mates for our very, very social pup.

    Stoney, you're training them to come and let you inspect what they picked up also helps in getting them to return your birds to you without getting into the chewing up the bird or your having to play tug a war with them. Two things no bird hunter wants to happen with that quail or duck. Fortunately doves have loose feathers and most dogs just want to give them to you instead of keeping it.

    It never fails to amuse me during the Westminster dog show how they say that "the long coat is designed to protect the d in heavy cover." Yeah right!! You take that poodle or that English Cocker out in that long coat into an actual adventure where there is tallgrass and weeds and in the fall....burrs. Let me know how that works for you. Lol. I will say this, when I take my dog out on one of her hikes and I don't know the area well, I put her on a harness and a 20 ft long line so if she runs off the edge of something, I can get her out of a bad situation. If we are in a flat field, I don't worry so much but if we are in the woods, where I cannot see those sudden drop offs that some come along, I don't want her hurt. I also take water fpr her, I don't want her drinking out of still water at all.

    Slightly off topic (maybe) question: What do you do regarding snake avoidance training? We recently moved to an area where copperheads are around. My dog has previously had rattlesnake avoidance training in California and it seems to have worked because he never got bitten. One of our neighbors’ dog here got nailed by a copperhead. The dog survived, but has a scarred nose. My own dog is a very investigatory, sniffy dog. I don’t want him sticking his nose in a brush pile with a snake under it. There do not seem to be any snake wranglers offering avoidance training here like there are in California and Arizona.

    We have toxic Cane toads here 🇦🇺 They just go about their business, but Dogs, particularly Terriers are Immediately aroused by them jumping around And so teaching the Leave command is critical !! If the dog was alone and encountered a snake we can Hope some of the toad training would pay off..

  • @petereastwood7868

    @@Terrierized Thanks. My dog has a pretty good ‘leave it’ when I’m with him, but it’s not a once and done command. He obeys, but, being very inquisitive, he’ll try again after a little time has passed if he’s curious enough. When he is allowed to run off into the woods the ‘leave it’ could not be further from his mind. The snake avoidance trainer said that some dogs generalize from rattlesnakes to all pit-viper types of snakes. I guess they all share a similar kind of smell. I won’t know if my dog is one of the generalizers until he comes face to face with a copperhead, which, to my knowledge, hasn’t happened yet. There is no vaccine for copperhead venom either, as far as I know; and it is questionable whether any snake venom vaccine actually works anyway.

  • @Terrierized

    @Terrierized

    @Peter Eastwood Using a long line is a great way to strengthen the command, As part of training, you can condition a dog to (non venomous) frogs/lizards/ even snakes, anything really, and with the long line just reel him back in! Even have the dog on the line as you hike, if there are particular hazards to be avoided 👍 Be aware and alert but don't stress

    I hope no one takes this the wrong way, but I don't understand how/why anyone would take a perfect breed of dog such as a Golden Retriever or a Labrador and "doodle" them. Is it just cosmetic or are there actual behavioral or personality traits people are looking for.

    Many reasons. Labs / retrievers and Poodles both have some great, but different traits. Cross breeding can bring out the best of both breeds and a massive bonus is hybrid vigor.

    The poodle has had a bad reputation problem. I tend to think of my standard as a wool coated lab. Nothing a lab can do that she can't- except shedding. Lots of people here in the UK are using them for field work again, which is fantastic. Doodles are generally talked up as poodle coated, non shedding versions of the other breed in the cross. I'm not anti doodle at all( my little dog is a Bedlington x mini poodle), but most doodle owners really wanted a poodle - they just didn't know that poodles can go outside of the show ring. I've not seen any effort to standardise any of the crosses with view to creating a new breed, so I can only assume it's just a fashion thing.

    If you mix a king charles spaniel and a toy poodle for example, you get the hypoallergenic qualities of the poodle and some of the positive personality traits of the king charles, whilst reducing some of the health issues that king charles dogs have.

    @@steelcitypoodle508 Ah we have in Australia the supposed cobberdog that's trying to be pushed as an official breed of labradoodle...but the claims are it's not really a doodle at all, ah the stench of marketing.

    I don't mean to be offensive but I would be mindful of Daniels Defense. They have frequently supported anti 2nd amendment politicians and have gone out of their way to make malign gun owners.
