I have two beautiful pugs. One is 7 and the other is 2 years old. They are both happy and healthy; and neither of them has hip issues. I also happen to know pugs who lived up to 16 years. Well bred and cared for pugs live happy long lives. Just feed them high quality diet, keep them lean, clean their wrinkles, and don’t expose them to very high temperature, and you are all set. They are wonderful lovable animals.

Meron I have a 12 yr old sprayed f Pug who isn't traditional at all. She's tall, long bodied and lean. Her face isn't as flat like other pugs her little snout is out further taking after her Pops. She's lucky my 15 year old Pomeranian cleans her face every day. She still moves well and has had to have one dental in her life and is a pure joy. My vet said he wants to steal her because she is such a great dog, he calls her a Pug~eranian because she lives with 2 Poms and she must push her nose out to be like them. A pug success story. She is not a sausage 🐖

But they would undoubtedly be better of with a more natural body and head shape. It is completely selfish to breed these dogs just for looks, at the cost of their quality of life. Just because some pugs can live a longer life, without serious issues, doesn’t mean that it’s acceptable for the dogs to look the way that they do. Not to mention that very few owners are responsible enough to keep up that level of maintenance. I don’t even know how anyone can find something so deformed cute. They are lovely dogs but I will never support anyone who endorses the breed.

Apothegmatic Reality Although I agree questions of ethical breeding are important, disparaging all pugs as ‘deformed’ and their owners as cruel - in a KZread comment - endears you as a total fucking dickhead.

Pugs can be healthy when bred selectively. I have had 3 pugs and the last two lived problem free to 15 and 17 years old. I now have a very athletic and agile pug with zero problems and she can run for 3 hours straight. As long as the pug is bred responsibly and kept at a good weight, they can lead happy and healthy lives.

Only 7 out of 40 Pugs tested didn't have breathing difficulties though. The show world and pet demand want a flat face. Lack of muzzle causes serious problems functioning for a canine. No way around that. Not even champion breeders of Pugs are breeding responsibly.

I have two pugs, 7 and 13, My older pug (13) can swim great, he’s always swam in our pool from the front to back. First time hearing this about them having trouble swimming.

My pug is very athletic .he is addicted to tracking ..he loves running and never like to sit inside the house ..has no such breathing issues though he sneezes a lot during weather change ..he loves ⛅ sun too and tan himself a lot..

i have a pug...they are cute and very smart (easy to teach them) but stubborn as hell...they have many medical problems, snore very loudly, they sheed daily (hair all ovre the place), eat all they see (stone, dirt, bird poop, buttons...) even if they had a meal 5 min ago....but all that is forgoten when he comes to you and cuddles with you, they are loyal and great with children :)

The snoring is caused by an obstructed airway and causes a great deal of suffering to the dog. If he ever wakes up suddenly from sleep, it's because he was asphyxiating. Please look into having a soft palate resection done by an experienced vet.

I have a pug who has no breathing issues, walks at least 2 miles daily, loves to run and play. She's "badly bred", in show dog terms. Meaning she has just a bit of a muzzle and she's not as thick as the show dogs. I feel sorry for show quality dogs, though. I wish caring breeders would accept dogs with more moderate conformation. Mine still looks and acts like a pug, but she has a happier life.

60-some percent of owners of individual brachycephalic dogs with breathing problems don't think their dog has a breathing problem, per a veterinary survey. In another study done on 40 Pugs, only 7 were found not to have significant breathing difficulties. Noisy breathing, snoring, snorting, getting too hot when it's just warm, frequent panting are all signs.

Would LOVE to see a dachshund or any spaniel breed done next! :)

70% of all Pugs hip tested with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) were dysplastic. They have the second worst hips right behind the English Bulldog (for comparison, in the German Shepherd Dog, Golden Retriever, and Labrador only around 20% of individuals had hip dysplasia. Even Labradoodles have better hips and more tested dogs than Pugs). Over 40% of all Pugs tested for elbow dysplasia with the OFA were dysplastic. They have the second worst elbows, right behind the Chow Chow. When Cambridge University did an assessment on 100 Pugs for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, they found only 7 of the dogs tested could breathe freely and without struggle. The university also documented the breathing of normally skulled dogs and found none of them had breathing difficulties. A new study now points to the classic way many Pugs (as well as English and French Bulldogs) sit as being a sign of gait abnormalities. The stereotypical upright position with hind legs stretched forward or to the side seems to correlate with hip and patella issues.

Also, most Pugs that are pets and are in the show ring are overweight, sometimes even obese. They came out as the top three breeds to be seen above a healthy weight in the show ring. The others being the Labrador Retriever and the Basset Hound.

Taco Salesman my friend owns a pug and doesn't recommend them to anyone. The pug sleep sits meaning its can't breathe properly sleeping while laying down and he stops breathing in the middle of sleeping when laying down. Try telling her that and show her how much surgery for their nostrils and soft palate costs and inform her the dog will most likely need it. Try to get her to join pug health groups on Facebook to show her just how unhealthy these dogs are. It's sad she's putting her wants before a dogs need to breathe and function properly.

Hailey Jarmon I have! I've shown her pretty much all that can be said on pugs, I'll try some more but her response is always "but their sooo cute!!" And "b-but every purebred dog has health issues!!" Which is true, but I don't think we're ever going to see a German shepherd or a pitbull drop to the ground and struggle to get air into it's lungs because it's a humid on a summer day. She also wants a Cane corso, a dog she is absolutely unqualified to own in every single way, she couldn't even give our since passed french bulldog a bath, if you can't even bathe a 20 pound dog, then how the fuck do you expect to control a dog that nearly weighs as much as you do?!.

Taco Salesman oh god that'd be scary especially because she'd probably get one from a back yard breeder and it'd become a dear biter. On the pedigree dogs exposed blog there's a page about a dog called arnie who's a French Bulldog and I really advise you make her read that because the same things can happen to pugs and it's so sad. Sometimes you just can't convince people not to get one and that's really sad.

If you get a pug from a breeder who does it correctly to breed dogs with larger nares can help avoid some of these issues with brach breeds. They can be a lot more active, for one. They can avoid the surgery some BYB dogs will need because of their poor breeding.

Please do a whippet or other sighthounds!!

Any ways we can strengthen our Puggos hips so they don't go out as they get older? I stand them up and do back leg workouts with them, not sure what else I can do when we train since I have pugs that train and our boy is in amazing shape built like a mini boxer.

I have a grumble. Life is good.

My pug is very aggressive towards strangers. He won’t necessarily attack them, but he’ll bark his lungs out and if you do something that he feels is threatening towards him, he will attack them and bite at their socks and does this a lot to little kids because they will try to pet him or play with him. Just wondering if anyone else has a pug like this and if they know how to fix it.

The comments are interesting. Many people happy with living with their pugs, some who aren’t and many people declaring that pugs should cease to exist because they live a life of suffering. I don’t know the answer but I have owned a pug, a pit, a Shepherd and a ridgeback. The pug lived longest and had little to no health problems. It was most definitely not a life of suffering. I would get another.

The reason they are called a grumble is possibly because most pugs tend to make a "grumble" noise basically whenever the are tired, being lifted, or just annoyed or tired. Sounds like a growl but kinda comes from the back of the throat and nose. Kinda of a funny noise actually 😂

It's not really funny, it's a result of soft palate tissue pushed back into the head (due to lack of muzzle) blocking the throat/airway, making a noise when air is drawn through it. The dogs can't breathe normally.

Ensure it's a LUA dalmatian (or it will have painful bladder stones its entire life) and the litter is BAER tested for deafness. Some 40% of Dals are deaf in one or both ears, thanks to breeding for too much white fur, especially on the ears. Poor temperaments (nervous, high wired, aggressive, hard to train) are common as well, spend a day with the parents before you buy. You are going to need to spend a lot and probably travel a good long while, possibly out of the country, to get a decently healthy Dal. They're one of many breeds seriously screwed by their breed clubs and kennel clubs.

One of my "grandpugs" (son's pets) had all of the health issues mentioned here except (thank goodness) eye prolapse. I don't think he spent a physically comfortable day of his life and had to be euthanized at age 12. I love the breed's temperament, but the standard needs to be radically changed to promote the breeding of healthy animals.

Pug is the most adorable breed.

I love pugs. I did have two, one just died from aggressive mast cell cancer which is common in pugs. The other has degenerative disk disease and can no longer walk property, several allergies and once had a proptosed eye. All common in pugs. As much as I love them dearly and their sweet demeanor, this breed should not be bred. They are one of the most inbred breeds in the world and suffer terribly due to genetic disorders. Their NUMEROUS health conditions are devastating both to the animal as well as your wallet. I have not known one pug owners who’s pug didn’t suffer from at least a few of the countless heath conditions they can have. Both of mine were rescues, but I don’t think I will have any more. It’s heartbreaking

The only one who will suffer is your dogs, with their pinched-shut nostrils (try breathing through flattened straws all day), elongated soft palates blocking their throats, hypoplastic tracheas, bulging eyes, and painful arthritis. They will never know what it feels like to draw a full breath, to be competely oxygenated, to be able to cool yourself on a hot day.

Many animals are prone to different diseases, that doesn't mean there aren't room for them in our world. I assume you are a strict vegan also? Since pigs, chickens etc. are breed with extra ribs, less muscle and so on, which causes pain (on top of being treated like shit and then slaughtered in horrific ways). I think its stupid to focus on animals that generally have a high standard of living, when so many animals are in dire, horrific circumstances.

Which is completely impossible without introducing other dog breeds into this one because if you kept it within the breed but bred for a longer muzzle the dogs would be too inbred. Of course show breeders would never introduce new breeds because it would affect their temperament (yeah right more like they care more about looks than health)

My Pug lived to be almost 16 and was as healthy as an ox, I have another friend with a 17-year-old pug. This video is garbage ... if you look at the life expectancy of a pug on many sights, it is longer than most breeds.

Aragon Pawson "healthy as an ox" what do you consider healthy as an ox? I consider it a 14 year old labrador still retrieving birds. I consider it a 16 year old border collie that hikes miles everyday up until the dogs dies. I consider it a 20 year old livestock guardian dog that's still working. I'd rather die at 70 and live a healthy life than die at 90 and spend the last 20 years in pain and not being able to function. I have a friend who's pug is 6 years old and has bad breathing problems and can't go outside for a mile walk for 90% of the year. Do you think that's fair to the dog? The dog is a pet weight (aka not obese) and is from a show breeder.

The amount of health problems this breed has is fucking atrocious, what's even worse is how delusional and defensive their breeders/owners are. Compare a picture of a pug from the 1900's to one now is like night and day. Please people, if you're so committed to owning a pug-like dog than go for a pug mix. Thankfully some European breeders have seen the problem and have since the "Retro mop" a far healthier version created from crossbreeding to other breeds.

good video as usual, but imho this should clearly state that people shouldn't support this breeding since it is not healthy for the dog. If you wanna get a pug, get a pug with a long snout like they used to have when they were first bred.

Very few dogs have difficulty breathing and cooling themselves normally, however. That's a flat-faced exclusive. You can't take away a dog's muzzle, his respiratory and cooling implement, and expect he will be fine. Fortunately it's very easy to breed out; just go for a little more muzzle and open nostrils. Unfortunately, Pug people tend to care more about their dogs' looks than their quality of life.

Good thing they have disallowed the breeding of the pug in my country because of the many health issues. It only exist because people wanted to make cute shit out of a dog.. I feel sorry for any pug in this world and I have zero respect for anyone who owns one..*just my opinion*

what are you saying though...? That pugs should be left in shelters and put down? Are you saying that no one should own a pug just because of the horrible breeding choices humans made? It's not the pugs fault that they ended up like this. If I see a poor pug at the shelter, are you saying I shouldn't adopt it because of it's health problems. It's a living being, it really hurts me that you would want pugs to not be adopted. You basically want them to die out.... That's so cruel. Yes the way they were bred is wrong but that doesn't mean they should suffer for it. I owned a pug and I loved her so much.... It would be nice if you explained your comment better because it really hurts to think of people hating an animal for something they can't control, a living-being with feelings.

@@ShallonHughes they banned the continued breeding of the dog to this standard, not its existence. They aren't euthanizing the ones that already exist, obviously. People don't hate them, they just hate "torture breeding". The Dutch Pug Club still exists and is going for a lovely Victorian-era type conformation now, with a slimmer build and a bit of muzzle.

Trisha Sen yea you want a dog that is “cute” at the expense of them being prone to major health problems like Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE) and canine hip dysplasia (CHD), as well as minor concerns like elongated palate, patellar luxation, stenotic nares, Legg-Perthes disease, entropion, keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS), hemivertebra, obesity, and skin infections. Nerve degeneration, demodicosis, seizures, distichiasis, and allergies are occasionally seen in this breed of dog. Tell me if I don’t want to continue having a dog bred just because they are known to have so many health problems and that I don’t give a shit if they are “cute” tell me how that makes me disabled?

Dear WOOLOO LOO My comment may appear dumb to you since it appears I have spoken about it from the cuteness perspective. The question of disability raises our inability to solve the heavy breathing problems and major health issues that a Brachycephalic (flat-faced) dogs such as Pugs and Bulldogs mostly face. The health of pedigree dogs is by the grace of our progress is a human caused issue. Certain dog breeds exist since we chose to create them. We should simply more focused in finding adequate and effective means to help them. Plus, my comment on disability. You are not in this alone. We all are since we created the breed and are unable to handle the health issues.

Why not?my 3 pugs are healthy as hell, i was at the vet a few days ago and he said they will be forever healthy as long as i keep cleaning their faces, cleaning their teeth daily, 30 min walks and done... Also bulldogs are in a much worse situation

A "breed" cannot be aggressive. Please don't say it again. An individual dog can be aggressive but not a whole group. A pug is not dangerous because it is small. Any large dog can be dangerous. Read a book called pit bull

Breeds can definitely be predisposed to aggression. American Pit Bull Terriers are more likely to display dog aggression, and this comes from someone who enjoys the APBT breed. The same way a breed can have a tendency to chase and kill small animals, as in terriers and sighthounds.

wrong. how many breeders of apbt are there? your telling me all of there lines have predispositions that lead to aggression. No. remember dogs are not wild animals subject to natural selection. they are domesticated animals we are breeding and there are not breeders out there purposely breeding aggressive dogs. it would be too dangerous. there is no evidence that any breed in particular is aggressive. Again read a book. Its called Pit bull reclaiming the american icon. it goes through all of the studies and there are none that show a particular breed exhibts aggression.

Show me some proof here cuz all I'm hearing is me saying no they are not and other people saying yes. No reputable dog behaviorist says this breed is aggressive. They say this DOG is aggressive.
