I live out in the country where people will frequently abandon their animals. One day, almost 3 years ago now, I was taking my pit bull outside and saw someone from their truck throw a little black dog. They drove off quickly and left the dog behind. I ran up to the dog, it was the cutest pug I’d ever seen in my life. He was about 3 years old and perfectly heathy. Gizmo is now very happy with me and the rest of his new family 💕

I met my girlfriend 5 years ago and she had just gotten a pug. I’ve always liked animals, grew up with pets, but had never been really attached to a pet. It took about a month of her(Monkey is her name) following me everywhere, absolutely having to be on top of me as I watch tv or just sitting. One weekend while my girlfriend was out of town, I don’t know what happened. I walked in the door after a late night of partying. Monkey comes running down the hallway as she did every time I came home, and I picked her up, took her to the couch to sit with me, she looked me dead in the eyes, as always, but that was the night I realized I had the best friend I’ve ever had or ever will have. From that moment on, I was, and still am, at her every need. If she wants to play and I’m completely exhausted from work, I will play until she wears herself out. I don’t really go out at night much anymore because I enjoy being with her more, and I take her everywhere with me. My family loves her to pieces and laughs a lot at how much I spoil her. I am one of those “crazy dog people” now and I don’t care. The only issue in our home now is my girlfriend thinking she loves me more and I love her more, which isn’t true, we just have our own little bond. They are the greatest little friends you could ask for, but if you must have your personal space, you absolutely will not have that with a pug, lol. Other than that, I would recommend one to anyone else looking for a perfect little companion. Their hearts are bigger than they are, and all the shedding, grunting, snotting, and their face one inch away from every meal you eat, along with all the other “cons”, is something you will actually love about them.

My pug just turned 6 years old last month, & I’ve had her since she was a little puppy. I think it’s funny that every day feels just as loving & exciting as the first day I got her. I know it’s a little dramatic, but I sometimes cry just looking at her because she’s so precious to me. She’s the only thing that has been consistent & unconditional in these past 6 years, grounding me and caring for me as much as I care for her. She truly is my angel. ❤️

I rescued my pug buddy Dutch 3 years ago the vet said he was between 2 and 5 years old when we got him. It is believed that he was a puppy mill stud because he literally took weeks before he figured out that he didn't have to stay in his crate even though the door was open and that he had the run of the house. Although he was crate trained he wasn't house trained nor did he have any idea how to play with toys or balls. Well after 3 years I now have an extra appendage that can drive me insane at times and Dutch's new favorite games are rough housing and playing tag around the dining room table. LOL I am disabled and spend most days in a recliner or on the couch, and Dutch gives me a reason to get up everyday plus he forces me to get some exercise whether or not I feel up to it or not. Other than my wife and kids he is the best thing that ever! But I agree, pugs are super needy and will eat until they explode if left to their own divices. So if you don't have time or you don't want a dog at your feet 24/7 or on your lap every time you sit a pug isn't for you. And yes they shed horribly but it is a small price to pay for the devotion and love they give back for taking care of them. They aren't the sharpest knife in the drawer but they are the most loving. Dutch senses when I am in a lot of pain and don't feel well and when that happens he will literally not leave my side and if I move at all he stands out of a dead sleep and looks at me until he knows I am ok. Funny how they just know.

"extra appendage", perfect description. People should know that pugs are ABSOLUTELY NOT INDEPENDENT dogs. If you're in the house they will find you and either sit in your lap (most preferred position), lie on top of you if you are lying down or lean against you. It's strange but they need to be in physical contact with you. These dogs simply crave human attention like no other dog I've ever owned.

I appreciate the video. We found a neglected pug in the road today. Took her to the vet. No microchip. They guess 11 1/2 yrs. Her nails were corkscrewed and one was digging into her toe. She may have never been trimmed, or its been a really long time because her toes look permanently bent after being trimmed. She received her rabies and a bath. They said they don't think her teeth were ever cared for...or it's been a really long time, because what teeth she does have left all need to be pulled since their health is beyond repairing. She is underweight and needs to gain. So far we realize that she hasn't been taught anything, but responds to treats well, so that is how we'll train her, if she's capable of learning this late, we think so. My other animals aren't sure about her presence. So far she gets into everything and doesn't even try to go around obstacles, just plows through, she slides all over the tile...so booties have been ordered. I guess we have an adventure ahead of us! 😁

I have had 5 pugs and have lived each of them so much. My first pug was 2 months old when we first got him. He had the longest tongue and loved yo lick. We named him "Lambe" which stands for loves to lick. We used to take him to A&W to have an ice cream cone. We loved watching him eat it. He was our baby for 18 years and finally had to put him down. I cried for weeks. To this day I still miss him. We got the movie 101 Dalmations and he would sit on the couch and watched it. Constantly running behind the tv to get the dogs. We loved him so much. He's buried on our front yard underneath our tree. He loved it there. I'm crying now just thinking of him.

I have a pug chi cross, Jodie. She too has selective recall. However, I have trained her using a special word. When I call out that word she always comes because she knows it always means she gets a treat. Pick a word that won’t be used by a lot other dog owners at the dog park. Repeatedly call your dog using the word, then give a treat each time. Soon they will come every time. In an emergency if they get off the leash then you can use the word to recall them. It has worked great for us.

I have an 11 year old Pug, Prissie Sue. She is a delight but very stubborn. She loves carrots as a treat! She was overweight so her treats are now carrots. No dog treats. She lost 11 pounds and the vet is so happy because it helps her joints and muscles. She knows so many tricks but the best one; and she taught herself, by watching me. She gets on the bathroom scales and weighs herself. She stays there (sits or stands, whatever I tell her to do) until I check her weight! No kidding... I took a picture of her on the scales to the vet's office and they posted it over the scales. They could not figure out why she hopped up on their scales so easily. I laughed and told them it was a "trick". Prissie Sue was my husband's dog and he passed away six years ago. She is my gift from him... He did so love his baby girl too.

We got a Retro-Pug puppy in April and are so happy with her character and health 😍 Retro-Pugs become more and more popular in Germany, because standard pug breeding is defined as „toture breeding“ (Qualzucht) in case of so many health issues like laboured breathing, inflammation of eyes and crinkles, defective foot position and so on. It‘s so important to inform yourself well about the breed, her problems and find a reliable breeder, who‘s looking for health before visuall appearance/ cuteness.

Great job on this video. I’ve had three pugs over the past twenty years and this video sums it up well for new owners. I would add though that you should expect vet bills on this breed. For instance, the vet will generally recommend they be anesthetized before teeth cleaning. Things like that can get expensive, but they’re worth it.

Combing them every day helps....Do not encourage your pugs to jump as small dogs should not be jumping, esp. not on hard surfaces. My sister's pug was encouraged to jump and guess what? His spine got injured from jumping and one day he could not walk anymore... so be careful! They are precious little dogs!!!

I had a pug he was a Russian pure bred pug who was rescued at two weeks .. he passed away at the age of 13 last year . Seeing this video makes me miss him so much and it is so relatable .. took a lot of patience to train him (hardly ). They are stubborn when it comes to food .if u don’t share your meal with them they won’t let you pet them ,lol. They truly are the cutest and can easily win in a snoring competition against my dad

I love my pug. I just wish they weren’t bred like the way they are. I don’t like seeing dogs or my dog struggle to breathe. There should be a demand for pugs with bigger snouts.

I rescued a tiny 6-1/2 month old blind Pug pup from her abusive owner who had not only beaten her, dislocated both of her hips and broken her femor/leg bone just below the femor head, but he had abandoned her on the street, where after almost a week she was run over by a car. Her skin, although beginning to slowly heal, was still raw where the owner had poured what he said was flea medicine down her back from neck to tail and an inch wide burning off her hair and skin. The bone break was in two diagonally and splintered. The owner never provided her any Vet, vaccinations, nothing. She was terrified of being picked or even touched. She would not eat nor drink water until wee hours of the night when she felt everyone (both human and animal) were asleep and even then she'd just sneak a mouthful and hide to eat it. Initially she would try to remain hidden under something or in a corner where she felt hidden from sight. A neighbor had found her hiding under his deck and chased her off a couple times just to find her hiding there a day or two later. He asked if I would take her adding he thought something was wrong with her, sick possibly. She would turn in a circle when he try to chase her away. I didn't have her 20 minutes before I knew she was blind, appearing to have large cataracts completely cover both eyes. Taking to my Vet that same day, X-rays told the story of the harm done to this little, long time emaciated, underweight and abused Pug pup. The cataracts were actually callus' that had formed from her blinking over dry eyes. She born without the formation of tear ducts; she tested 95% blind and requires use of lubricating eye ointment every 4-6 hours at least. After a week, I located the owner. He told me "keep her, I don't want her, I hate Pugs. I got her for a pet for my 2 year old step-daughter because she and her mother wanted a Pug. I only like the English Bulldogs I breed", (come to find out, under the table as he is on the State Breeder's Watchlist). He admitted the girl would throw the Pug pup down on the floor. "I'll just tell them I looked, but couldn't find her". He said this Pug had run away, (a lie of course), that he was constantly having to spank her for having accidents in the house rather going on paper or outside. I very firmly informed him that had he paid attention to her or taken her for a Vet. checkup, vaccinations, etc. he would have known she was born without tear ducts with caused her to gradually go blind within three to four months of opening her eyes. Also, describing her many injuries, some months old, I told him that she had been repeatedly abused severely over several months. The owner said that the previous owner must have done it. Almost two weeks later, that owner showed up at my home again giving me the Pug's AKC paper which he had never filed. The paper named him as the original owner buying the Pug at 8 weeks old from the breeder. He asked if I had trouble with her using the bathroom in the house. "Not at all". That I would lead her in and out of the doggy door several times throughout the day and night and after about 3 days she was doing it on her own, sometimes following my other rescue dogs and cats. That it was easy to teach any blind animal to have confidence to function as seeing animals with little to no fear if you take the time with them. This seemed angered the owner. One of my younger rescues mutts, Tori, took the Pug I named 'Peggy Sue' under her paw; they are best friends running, chasing through the house and around my very large yard. Tori and my older Yorkie mix rescue, Maxine, take turns several times a day licking Peggy Sue's eyes to keep them clean as being dry they become crusty with dust, pollen, etc. especially after I use lubricant. Initially, my Vet. said Peggy Sue might make it to age 2 years before a decision would need made; two total hip replacement or put her down. Her age 1 year X-rays showed she was in no pain but minute improvement. Her age 2 year X-rays totally surprised my Vet. One hip joint had basically moved back into socket and the other had moved to being just slightly out of socket but not enough to be of concern nor interference. No indication of arthritis. The broken bone had closed significantly and calcium had formed between and around the break fusing it solidly together, (just as happened with a similar break of my collarbone). Peggy Sue would not require any type surgery for her hips or broken bone. She will be 7 years old this October; healthy, happy, active and very loved and loving. Unfortunately, nothing can be done about the undeveloped tear ducts nor the callus' other keeping them soften using eye lubricant. What was hard for her to overcome was the abuse trauma. It took almost 2 years before her fear dissipated enough to let me actually give her head a good rub and scratch without ducking and running away. Now, she loves it every time I walk by her. It took 5 years before I could pick her up or put her in my lap without her instantly having a heart attack from fear. Now, once each during the day and night, she'll lick my leg to let me know she wants up in my lap for a brief, 1 minute full body rub, then she wants down. It obvious she still remembers being picked up and thrown down by the little girl when I pick her up while standing. The 4 months the owner had Peggy Sue he inflicted relentless devastating horror of pain and fear upon her. As for eating, it took almost 3 years for her to stop waiting until all were asleep before she would eat or drink. She still tends to wait until late evening/night, but won't eat until no other dog is eating. She'll just lay down, watch and wait for others to eat and leave. What's so sad about this is my 15 rescue mutts have six 2-1/2 quart size food bowls that contain food 24/7 with one of the six bowls in the being separated out of sight from the others. Sadder yet, Peggy Sue in not the only dog I have who has survived, suffers the memory of the same type of abusive life. 🐾

They howl when they here baby's cry or sirens. They love to bark. Even if there is nothing to bark at. They are my favorite breed.

On my second Pug now in life, and there are only two things I would add: 1) is that a Pug’s playing habits are almost cat-like at times. While they can’t climb the drapes or a tree, they have amazing paw dexterity, and really love the small jingling types of toys most would associate with cats. Olive nor Olivia ever really cared for kongs or chew toys. It seems they’d prefer to make a ruckus, jingling or squeaking away as they thrash around, dropping the toy at my feet. It is not abnormal for them to rub their face and body against your leg, also very cat-like, stealing a little affection as I’m busy on the phone or answering some emails. “Pay attention to me” is what I’d hear if they could talk. 2) my Pugs have always struggled with other dog socialization. What I mean by this, is that they seem to have a harder time picking up on aggressive or defensive social cues from other dogs. They are VERY social and love other dogs, always. Its just that they are so fun-loving, they don’t seem to get that not every dog wants a snorting little meatball in their face when they’ve just met. A few times I’ve had to come to the rescue when a larger dog got a bit irritated when one of my Pugs chose to ignore their obvious communication of “stay away”. So be careful at the dog park. Otherwise, and besides the SHEDDING, they are my favorite breed ever. I can’t sleep without Pug snoring by my side. I love all dogs, but they really have unique personalities that are impossible not to fall for.

My little pug Java lived until she was 17. I worked hard to keep her weight where it needed to be - in fact, they once told me at our vet’s office that she was the only skinny pug in the practice (I.e., correct weight!). Java was the smartest dog I have ever seen. And yes, she did stay close to me all the time. Whenever I wore shorts or had my nightgown on, I could often feel her little nose on the back of my calf. Great dog! I miss her dearly.
